Video: Netflix on PlayStation 3

By Tim Conneally | Published November 6, 2009, 2:52 PM

As a PlayStation 3 owner, I did not have the luxury of Netflix Instant streaming through my video game console until today. Now, with the aid of Blu-ray's BD-Live and a free Netflix disc which must remain loaded in the PS3, I now have access to an experience similar to the one Xbox Live Gold subscribers had on their 360s.

These discs shipped out to subscribers this week and started landing in mailboxes today.

Since last year, I have used one of the Roku streamers to watch Netflix on my TV. It's a $99 investment I've gotten a lot of mileage out of, especially with the inclusion of Amazon On Demand, which gets a number of titles that Netflix does not. Unfortunately, for as handy and affordable as the Roku device has been, it does not allow movie titles to be browsed directly on the television. Users had to build an instant queue on their PC and only that content could be browsed.

With Netflix on PlayStation 3, not only can the Instant streaming catalog be browsed, but also lists of titles recommended for the user based on his viewing habits.

Of the many Prom Dressesout there, a few actually stand out from the rest. Quinceanera Dress is one of them. For those who want to appear slick and tall and yet portray that sexy look a strapless Quinceanera Prom Dresses with a sweetheart neckline would do. The best design is the much dropped waist bodice covered with floral embroidery and beading. The skirt should be full of layered organza ruffles. Would you ask

Since this is just a BD-Live app couldn't they just adapt the app a bit and send the disk to everyone with a BD-Live Blu-Ray player.

sweet!! my brother uses netflix for mail-in dvd's, but he does not have any video game machines, so since xbox 360 netflix began I been using his acct info to get FREE streaming!

Windows 7 also has netflix, but on vmware on mac it kinda runs crappy.

now, PS3!!! I love my ps3! one less reason to turn my xbox on :)

the disc is only a temporary solution because apparently from what ive read MS has an exclusive deal worked with Netflix for a full streaming solution on consoles....according the Netflix, sometime during 2010 there will be a standalone app for the PS3's operating system...this was a workaround that Sony and Netflix cooked up to allow the system to work on the PS3 for the time being....

ive also read that by requiring the insertion of the BD disc it cuts down on the potential for piracy somehow or another...

the quality (audio/picture), and ability to search the ENTIRE Netflix streaming catalog is a BIG plus...especially over the "other" console's option...

I found the interface to be slow and clunky. The fact that you need to put a disc in every time you want to watch Netflix is also a bit of a hassle. However, comparing the video quality between my Roku HD-XR box and the PS3 streaming, the PS3 has the best video quality hands down. Also has noticeably better audio on my 60' LCD HDTV and my 1000 watt 7.1 surround system.

The audio and video quality make it worth putting in the disc for that special HD movie, but for convenience I am sticking with my Roku box. Roku also has more services and is getting MANY more in the near future.

When Sony includes Netflix streaming in the next software or firmware update, I will sideline the Roku box.

I got my disc earlier today, I have yet to try watching a movie on it, i've been watching netflix streaming through my TiVo for about 8 months, and so far the TiVo netflix interface seems much smoother than the PS3,

I thought the Disc from NetFlix would have had some sort of Firmware upgrade that would allow me to stream, having to put the Disc in every time i want to stream is a bit of a pain.

Yes, because when you play a normal dvd/blu ray you don't already have to put in a disc. It's like watching any other movie on the system that isn't purchased through PSN or streamed over the network.

Not saying it's that big a deal, just an extra step that you don't need to do with the Roku box or with a Tivo.

Point of STREAMING is to NOT have to put in a disc. Get it?

Also I could move my files from computer to computer using a jump drive. But it is easier to just send them over the network. Same concept here.
