VoIP Provider SunRocket Disconnects Customers

By Ed Oswald | Published July 17, 2007, 11:42 AM

Without much warning, customers of VoIP provider SunRocket found themselves without phone service Monday as the company shut its doors.

Calls to the Vienna, Va. based company's customer support line were greeted by the message, "We are no longer taking customer service or sales calls. Goodbye."

SunRocket had about 200,000 customers, and was one of the oldest VoIP providers, having started in 1994. It was also the second largest provider of Internet telephony services behind Vonage -- although a tenth of that company's size.

Signs of trouble may have first appeared late last month. On June 28, SunRocket's Chief Technology Officer Mark Fedor and Chief Information Officer Robert Kramer were fired. This was followed by the resignation of Chief Financial Officer David Samuels on July 2.

A significant number of employees were laid off the next day across the company. The Springfield News-Leader reported Monday that SunRocket laid off 200 workers at its call center, confirmed by Internet reports from employees.

In a internal memo, it looks as if the company at least tried to save itself before closing down.

"We have just been informed that any and all last ditch efforts to keep operations running as well as a potential sale of the company have not gone through and that SunRocket will cease operations at COB today," Director of Routing and Carrier Services Sonya Jefferson said.

It is said that if customers of the company act quickly, they may be able to port their telephone service and keep their number, according to reports and company employees.

As the story began to develop, one employee wrote about his feelings on Friday. "Congratulations to the ex-AOL management (you know who you are!) that took over for a new record in running a company into the ground, and congrats to the board of directors for yet another successfully mismanaged venture," he wrote to his blog.

"Internally, SunRocket's politics went further and further in preventing effective execution of the technology vision. But can be expected when you mix telecom and dot-com?"

Just talked to a friend of mine. Sunrocket billed him for another year the end of June. He called Discover and they refunded the complete amount! They told him that Sunrocket may send him notice for the 1 month of service, but he will probably not ever see that.

Just to let everyone know. I used my visa check card to buy the SR service. Bank of America Visa CC that is. When I called BOA claims told me that they have received many calls about SR and are crediting my account for the balance that I did'nt receive service for. No problem at all. Hopefully all the banks will be this nice. Hope BOA puts the screws to the SR brass.

My virtual line is now working and forwarding is working. Just got an e-mail today that Sun Rocket will be off by Aug 5th at the latest. No voice mail yet but Teleblend says by Monday. I have forwarded my Sunrocket number to my LandLine.

My Dad converted his back to land line with QWest. They gave him 3 months free and free installation since he ported over a number!

I still think Teleblend may be a better way to go, as other venders are more money, have hidden fees, or big cancellation fees. Just $13 a month till I decide if it is O.K. or not.

For $8/month and 3cents per minute my landline will forward my Sunrocket number to my landline.

The $12.95/month is still cheaper then the cost of adding long distance to my landline.

Just to let everyone know who doesn't know already. My comcast rep told me that SR did not own our telephone numbers, a third party company did. So we don't have to worry about SR's closing meaning we have lost our numbers. The rep said he was transferring my number from that company.

thanks Respro, for the heads up on this one... I have just finished a request to port my previous number with SR to VOIP.com.. the request takes a few days ... at this point, i have two good dial tones, two lines and who knows what tomorrow will bring?
Hopefully voice mail on the "Big TeleB" and my completed package with VOIP for my main line!

as of 7/26 my second emergency line is working fine with the Teleblend service, one month at a time! No VMail, haven't tried speed dial, but I firmly believe Teleblend is a NEW Extension of the old SunRocket data base of numbers and who knows who is running the show! But it works for now! The Acct FAQ is updated also.
Going online to my old sunrocket acct, I find all the outgoing and incoming calls recorded on my new Teleblend service (a new gotcha!)- Main number still going to VOIP.com, a new number has been assigned and voice mail, all features working there. They are shipping the adapter with the new number..... Good luck All!

Update: July 20, 2007, 4:15pm PT: We've had more questions about the emails that SunRocket customers have been receiving promoting two specific VoIP providers, Teleblend and Packet8, and what we think of those providers. First, we definitely do not recommend Teleblend. This company has no history whatsoever and as far as we can tell just appeared out of nowhere in the last several days. While we cannot confirm this, it seems as though a few ex-SunRocket employees just started the company this week in order to attract SunRocket customers. In our opinion, the whole thing seems a bit suspicious. In terms of Packet8, this is a company that has been around for a while. You can find our review of them on our full comparison page. Packet8 is not a bad option. They are a public company and provide a solid service. Still, it is not the one that we most highly recommend. Especially now that many VoIP providers are getting a large influx of new customers, we are concerned about their ability to scale and maintain quality service. This is yet another reason we are strongly recommending Vonage. They are a public company and have invested the most of any provider in their infrastructure so should be able to handle a large influx of new customers. As noted on our full comparison page and below, Vonage is now offering a special offer for SunRocket customers only that gives you two months free, free activation, free overnight shipping and a free phone adapter, but you must call 1-800-705-5042 to get this deal.

Update: July 24, 2007: We've continued to get questions about Teleblend and the company has been more forthcoming with information so we thought we'd share it with you. First, we want to reiterate that the only reason SunRocket (or the firm representing their creditors) is recommending either Teleblend or Packet8 is because those companies are paying SunRocket for the recommendation. Neither Teleblend, Packet8 or any other VoIP service can offer you continuation of your SunRocket service nor can they honor the money you may have already paid for SunRocket service. Teleblend and Packet8 have the same status of any other VoIP provider relative to SunRocket.

On to Teleblend. As we mentioned in our previous post, Teleblend is a brand-new VoIP service created last week specifically to recruit SunRocket customers. Teleblend is owned by USA Telephone, based in Kennebunk, Maine, which is in turn owned by United Systems Access Telecom, Inc., whose web site states that it is a privately-owned company. However, United Systems Access Telecom, Inc. is apparently owned by Unified Communications Corporation, a public company based in Singapore and traded on the Singapore Stock Exchange. If you are confused, you should be. This convoluted ownership structure does not give us a lot of confidence, nor does the fact that the Teleblend service itself is less than a week old and many customers we have talked to report that they can't get voicemail or get through to customer service. Bottom line, we still recommend that you stay away from Teleblend and go with a more established provider. See our full comparison page to choose the best VoIP provider for you and see the latest deals being offered to SunRocket customers

Beware of Teleblend.

Originally, Teleblend was suppose to offer the same features that SunRocket had.

After I paid their fee, I discovered their services and product were no better than that of a bankrupt company.

Then their web site indicated that voicemail would be up in 24-48 hours. I'm sure this led more people to enroll, but unfortunately their voicemail still isn't up.

Now I don't even see on their web site when voice mail will be operational. Were we suppose to forget their promises?

Doesn't sound good, does it?

Did they have any trouble charging your credit card? I don't think they had trouble charging mine. That shows where their priorities are. It's not in providing a good product or service. It's in collecting money while giving nothing more than what you were receiving from a defunt and employee-less company. Pathetic, isn't it?

Am I expected to pay for their service when I signed up due to a misleading ad?

Are they going to remedy this situation or do they not care about their customers at all?

I really think Teleblend should be ashamed of themselves.

Maybe Teleblend will do the right thing and be a responsible corporate member that doesn't steal from its very own customers. And if they do decide to side with fairness and honesty, I'll be the first to admit that my initial impression was wrong. Go ahead, Teleblend, do the right thing and make me retract my comments. Make me sing you the praises you have earned.

Why do I still have service, if Sunrocket is shut down??? I don't want to transfer with 16 months left on my contract, if I'm not going to lose service. Is it humanly possible Sunrocket did the right thing & transferred annual plan customers to another VOIP company, & just disconnected their monthly customers? Why didn't Sunrocket extend the courtesy of a definitive disconnection date? What a joke, I can't wait for the class action lawsuit.

SunRocket did *not* do the right thing and transfer annual plan customers. I was one. After last Monday, my service was sporadic and then a couple of days ago it was completely gone. What I think has happened is that Teleblend was quickly formed by USA Telephone to pick up all of SunRocket's service. They are in the process of shutting off all SunRocket customers. The reason I think this is that I had signed up with ViaTalk in a panic last Monday, ended up cancelling them today before ever starting to use the service - they really pissed me off in so so so many ways - and then I took a chance on the Teleblend thing, figuring I'd only be out $14 or so (with tax), and within five minutes of processing my credit card, my phone service was back on. Of course, I have no features or services or voicemail, just a dial tone, and incoming calls ring five times and then disconnect if I don't answer, but hey, it's better than nothing ... I'll give Teleblend a month to see if they get their act together.

I had always been concerned as to whether or not the company was doing well and hoped that it would survive since it was such a great service. I am not OK with paying another company for what I had already paid for, so thanks to whomever mentioned Magic Jack. I went ahead and ordered one yesterday. At $40 for a whole year, it isn't much of a risk, and I don't mind the Florida # since most people now have free LD anyway. My Sunrocket service is still working except for voicemail, but I decided to take a free month at Vonage while I wait for my Net2Phone adapter & number transfer to arrive. I'm a former Vonage customer & will be set up with them tomorrow using my old V-Tech adapter. Apparently, I can be disconnected from Sunrocket any day now.

I was on the buy 1 year get 2nd year free plan with Sunrocket, so I still had 16 months left on my contract since I prepaid $208 on 11/06. Net2Phone will honor up to 12 months of your unused Sunrocket contract for free. However you do have to pay $30 activation & $10 shipping for their adapter, but I feel $40 isn't bad for a whole year of unlimited calling service. After they honor my 12 months, I can cancel if I choose with no deactivation fee.

For anyone like me who has many months left on your prepaid Sunrocket contract, I suggest you look into the Net2phone offer of up to 12 free months:

P.S. I still filed a charge dispute with Capital One & may get some $$$ refunded as well.

The SunRocket going out of business was a complete surprise to me after returning from a 1 week R&R. The SunRocket Gismo RUN LED was flashing when I returned home and calls to SunRocket help line didn't help. The phone was kinda acting strange in that I could hear but other party couldn't hear me when calling. This issue came and went and now seems to have cleared up.

After reading many of these posts I decided the SunRocket going-out-of-business was for real. So I spent time researching other VoIP service providers. It was unclear to me after doing this research who to switch my VoIP service over to.

I've decided to use Vonage using their 2 free months at $24.95 value to give me some time to select my new VoIP service provider.

Vonage's service center appears to hail from the Philippines and the help person's accent was quite difficult for me understanding all that was being said and explained to me. No matter, I got through this by having to ask many questions and asking person to repeat many times to be sure I heard correctly and understood things.

I was previously on SunRocket's annual plan with an extended 3 free months. This actually was to have expired Aug 13, 2007 so I feel I did not lose too much and will simply ignore any reimbursement actions. The SunRocket's annual plan + the 3 free months was $199 or some $13.26 per month. The Vonage Residential Premium Unlimited plan runs $24.95 per month and they do offer an annual plan payment for this plan at $299.40 - $50(approx) or $249.40. This then comes out to $20.78 per month. However, the Vonage plan provides unlimited international calls to UK land lines whereas SunRocket charged $0.03/min over 100 mins per month. As we talk some $5 worth of calls to UK every month beyond the 100 free mins the effective SunRocket monthly bill was around $18-$19. Thus Vonage annual plan is really only about $2-$3 more expensive.

Having experienced SunRocket's demise and feel I should now hook up with a VoIP service provider who will be staying around and Vonage appears to be a reasonable answer to this at this time. I will see how they perform over next 2 months and then decide for sure.

I made use of Vonage's offer to SunRocket customers and will only pay some $1.70 in taxes for each of the 2 free months. All other startup charges were waived and their VoIP adapter should be in my hands withing 1 business day. My telephone number will get transferred over in less than 10 business days while I use a virtual number provided by Vonage.

The one thing that irks me at this time is that Vonage does not offer a 2nd tel number for FREE that can be assigned a different ringer. I used this for business purposes as I work from home at times. Having this feature meant I knew when the phone rang with the specially assigner ringer I kew it was a business call. Vonage wants to charge $24.95/month for the second number and I did not take them up on this offer for obvious reasons.

I found SunRocket's service to be excellent and their web site clean looking and with fast response. I also liked their voicemail feature(s) for which Vonage wants to charge extra for.

So, this is my situation at this time and I say Good Luck to all other SunRocket's customer base in finding a new VoIP service.

I had 3 calls to Vonage over 3 days and finally told them to cancel! What a mess. Couldn't understand reps and it was obvious they were reading from books.... they kept repeating things. First day I signed up (49 minutes) 2nd day I checked on order and it was "lost" (37 minutes), 3rd day checked on order again and there was a mistake on their part....41 minutes. All these calls on my cell phone. I finally decided I didn't want to be talking to them as I couldn't understand them and they obviously couldn't produce. Went to TeleBlend but still doing research as there is no voicemail so far and I cannot fax. SR - your service was wonderful...too bad you messed it up!!!

OK so everyone seems to agree that Teleblend is run by the same crooks that used to run Sunrocket. Does anyone know anything about Packet8? I understand any phone number not transferred to another provider by Sunday midnight may go back to whoever bought up the remains of Sunrocket, or to creditors or whatever. Only thing I'm concerned about at this point is keeping my number, as losing my number would be a major disaster. Packet8 seems to have been around for a while and promises fast and easy transfer of my number. Any good advice out there?

This was my second year of service with SR. I really enjoyed the savings, all the features etc. I had renewed my 2nd year back in March.

1- So I filed a complaint with the FCC via the link posted here.
2- I called my Credit Card company (Citi) they had a memo about the SR situation and put the amount in dispute so I will get some forms in a few days to complete and mail back. In the mean time I can deduct the amount from my credit card statement (I pay in full each month) There is no guarentee that I will end up with any money back when everything is said and done.
3- My SR service has dial tone but I can't make any calls as of today..... so I'm going to wait a bit and not jump back into another bad marriage with another VOIP company. So what if I lose my number I was only using it as a backup for my cell. So that concern of many of you is not my concern.

4- Thanks everyone for the good info on here, I just feel bad because I had a friend sign up about 3 months ago and had to break the news to him.

Heads Up Everybody!
I have been with Sunrocket for over a year and Yes! I have received their Goodbye and KissOff email. Anyway, I researched both Packet8 and Teleblend. I never was able to reach anyone with TeleBlend and I say be very cautious with them. As for Packet8, I have phoned them twice at 1-800-868-0068 and they were very timely and offering a good deal to get me going. $20 to try them for 30 days and that includes VoIP Fax service. They are sending me a free Broadband Phone Adapter and their Free Freedom Fax Adapter. Read the Cancellation policy carefully, I think Packet8 is a the best option for me. But note, I highly recommend that you go Month-to-month with them until you are absolutely sure that you are ready to committ. Once you pay them your annual fee and your 30 days pass, they will NEVER refund your $199 fee for any reason. Ok, that is all that I can say and I hope that this information helps you all. I have worked for MCI, WorldCom and now Verizonbusiness for almost 15 years and believe you me - Sunrocket reminds me of how I lost my ENTIRE life's savings ($485k) with the Worldcom fiasco. 2. they are the one who keeps the Sunrocket numbers up until Sunday midnight.

3. if you go with them it will be the exactly Sunrocket service just another name and different customer support.

TeleBlend doesn't offer voicemail because it's currently disabled with Sunrocket, & they are the same company! It's not worth saving your phone # just to be ripped off again. Well, I was foolish enough to sign up with TeleBlend. And let me be very clear on this point: So far, Teleblend service sucks. I don't know how else to put it. I paid money and in return I got service that was no different than the service I got from a defunct company that fired its employees and ceased operations. How much more pitiful can it be? The phone quality is about the same as the abandoned SunRocket. Support questions, even by email, aren't being answered. There's no voice mail. And you can't manage your features. What good are features if you can't use them?

In short: They charged my credit card and gave me nothing that I can see in return.

Not sure Vonage is a good choice. My experience with them was not good!!! I signed up for a 30-day free trial with them in June because I was having problems with the quality of my SunRocket phone calls about 25% to 35% of the time. The Vonage rep promised me the moon but they were empty promises. I contacted Vonage because they had sent me an e-mail saying a friend (Steve) had referred me and he and I would each get a free $50.00 pre-paid American Express credit card if I try Vonage, even if only for 1 day. If I stayed for at least 30 days I would get my second month free and my friend, Steve, would get 2 months free phone service. I had not talked with Steve in over a year (my how time flies) and, like a dummy, I didn't check with him to see if he really referred me to Vonage. So, I signed up, I cancelled within the 30 days (primarily because SunRocket fixed the problems I was having) and Vonage said no $50.00 AMX card for me or Steve if I cancelled, they said there would be a $39.95 cancellation charge to my credit card that would be reversed when I returned the equipment and that I had to pay the shipping to return the equipment. I told them that I had been told differently by the sales rep that signed me up and they essentially said, "Sorry, sucker." I told them that I absolutely will not authorize them to charge the cancellation fee to my credit card to which Vonage replied that they could not cancel my service if I would not authorize the charge. I said, then don't cancel my service but I will not use your service nor will I pay for it. They charged my credit card against my express refusal to allow the charge (that is credit card fraud). I called my credit card company and explained the situation. They reversed the unauthorized cancellation charge and the shipping charge that I was told would be refunded if I cancel within 30 days. They have notified the fraud department to contact me on Monday to press charges against Vonage for credit card fraud. Bottom line; AVOID VONAGE LIKE THE PLAGUE! Their sales people work on commission and keep their commission even if the customer cancels within the 30-day trial period. That gives the sales staff a strong incentive to lie about what Vonage offers and Vonage will not stand behind the lies their sales staff weave.

P.S. I checked with my friend, Steve, and he had cancelled his Vonage phone service over a year ago. He had referred me in April or May of 2006 and I guess Vonage resurrected that old referral in their deceptive attempt to get another customer. My friend could not get the 2 month's free Vonage phone service they promised because he was not even a Vonage customer. Vonage is the biggest internet phone company. Perhaps they are also the most crooked. That little deception was not a sales rep. That was the company. The email was sent to me from Vonage and had my friend's name on it as being a current Vonage customer. Well, well.

Hi:
Add me to the shocked group! We all fell off our chairs.
A gal pal referred me 2005. Was so excited. Bragged to my friends about the $199. phone bill a month! My youngest son was against it. "But, Mom, what if it goes out of business?" Thought never entered my mind! They would never do such a thing. Always wondered why no one I knew signed up with them. Now, so glad they didn't!
I am not rich. On a limited income. Noticed a few days ago..there was a problem. You also, must have spent most of the day..plugging in/our unplugging, as thought was my computer.
Stupid me! I called earlier that day. Received the message that they were not answering phone calls. I thought..they must be having a bad day. NEVER ENTERED MY MIND OUT OF BUSINESS.
Checked my mail late in the evening. What is sad..they sure didn't give us a warning. Was like..have to find another telephone company yesterday. I was on the $199, yearly plan, with 3 extra months. Was supposed to have run out May 07.
Really appreciate reading everyone's posts. I went ahead and signed up with the TeleBlend one, because of the reasonable price, and easy change over. No new equipment. Waiting an hour now..to speak with someone. Yes, agree...miss not having access to my voice mail. At least the phone works. Think maybe the decision for me to to just get a cell phone.
Looks like some big boys filled their empty pockets. Hope they can sleep at nights. What comes around goes around.
Well, I can't brag about SunRocket anymore!
Hope we can all make the right decision we are in search of.
Question. How can a business run without any phone support?

Just got off the phone with TeleBlend. Had to wait about an hour.
* The little gal said our voice mail should be active by this evening!
* I asked why was billed $14.95 instead of the $12.95, as advertised. Think she said some kind of taxes.
* She said will be billed $19.95 when my original plan expires. Will give me till May to figure out what I will do.
* But, if they don't get the voicemail working..will be changine soon.
* Do you also have the RUN light on your gizmo..blinking red? I asked her about that. She said..to unplug it for up to 5 minutes. Mine is still blinking red.
* I did ask her...if they were SunRocket. The anser was no..But, with using our same kizmo..and same number..plus, what others have mentioned...this blonde figures out..they must be in ca hoots! Will give them my faith and trust for now.
So happy I discovered this site. Great to hear other comments by many intelligent people.

I switched to Teleblend online Friday (7/20) in the evening after reading the SunRocket/Sherwood Partners bad news email. On my email invoice I was charged $12.95 for the transfer special and $2.52 in taxes. I was an annual member of SunRocket with service through 4/14/2008. My last invoice from SunRocket listed $199 for the annual service and $15.11 for Universal Service Fund Charge. This charge would only be $1.26 monthly.
I had to recycle my modem, router and gizmo today in order to get phone service. This may mean that Teleblend has control over the service now. My RUN light on the gizmo is also blinking red, but it may always have been that way. Last Friday was the first time I've looked at the gizmo since Oct. of 2006. The sound quality of my service is not good...the incoming voice cuts on and off. I don't have VM yet. The credit card dispute rep. at USAA told me that I probably have a 50-50 chance of a refund for my remaining 9 months of SR service. I'm hoping that she's a "glass half empty" person, because this scam with SR is blatant fraud. I really appreciate this site.

Randy Sinclair,

Thanks for the post. I sent a billing email to Teleblend under their "support" tab on their website asking them to itemize their charge for "tax" on my invoice. If this charge is for the Universal Service Fund only, the charge should be $0.98, based on the current domestic (do not make international calls) FUSF rate of 7.5933%. If Teleblend is bundling assorted taxes, fees, surcharges, etc. under the "tax" umbrella, we consumers are being bilked by Teleblend just as we were by the Big Ma Bells. Although any individual over charge is not punishing to the individual, imagine adding "tax" amounts to each former SR customer who chose to switch to TB!

If your payment was taken from your credit card, you can call the company and the will work on reversing the charge and investigate it for you. I am with Capital One and they were very helpful in this situation. Also, thank you to DesertGod for the information to file a complaint. Now SunRocket has a statement on their website about going out of business.

There is a compay called 'Viatalk' that is excepting SunRocket customers and they are pretty much willing to work something out.
When you sign up for phone service for $199 a year you will receive up to 3 months of your unused SunRocket contract time for free. For example:

- If you had a 12 month contract with SunRocket and only used 10 months of service you will receive 2 months free.

- If you had a 12 month contract with SunRocket and only used 4 months of service you will receive 3 months free since the promotion is good for up to 3 months of service.

I refuse to go with any company that SunRocket works a deal out with because you still have to pay for NEW service. Secondly, I can't get through to ask any questions.

On the other hand, VoIP does offer the limited 200 minutes plan for $9.95 but you have to pay some fees in order to transfer your phone number to it. These are the costs they sent me on a confirmation email after I changed my number to them:

Your initial credit card charge which includes a one time set up fee:

Setup Fee: $29.95
Shipping Fee: $14.95
Monthly Recurring: $9.95
Regulatory Recovery: $2.50
E911 Fee : $1.50

Yikes! I just emailed sunrocket yesterday 7/19! My phone wasn't working, checked the voip light not on! Emailed customer service and they sent me an email back that said a customer service rep would be in touch with me within 48 hours!!! Somehow, by restarting and unplugging and plugging my phone is working. Today, I get the email that they are gone!! I too am wondering about my $200.00. I paid in April. Don't know if my bankcard will honor the fraud charge!!!
I noticed that on Teleblend you have to pay for an extra number, that kind of sucks! I read on their website that they give you a $3.00 credit per month for international, does that mean you only have to pay $9.95 per month if you don't use international?
All in all, I was very happy with Sunrocket since April of 2006. I don't know anything about this stuff, my son set this up for me when I moved. Don't know the ins and outs of porting etc. I am more upset that they took my $200.00 for a year service and now I have nothing!
I live on a fixed income and don't have the extra $200.00 so I guess I will have to go with $12.95 per month or no phone!
This really ruined my day!!

Former SunRocket customer here... I still have service (for now), but am looking at the options. I too am thinking of going to Teleblend, simply to give me time to shop for an alternative. However, I don't know all the details on re-porting to a new provider.

Anyone have any Teleblend service issues to report?

I'm sure Teleblend was setup just for this purpose, and wouldn't doubt it if some or all members of the company are former SR employees. Seems like a perfect way to get out of debt, get back many of your customers, and charge them yet again for the same services. Oh, and buy the infrastructure for pennies on the dollar.

I do find it funny that the teleblend sales phone number is (877) 252-4548, and the support number was listed as (877) 252-4549 (until they updated their support page today). The SR main support number is also (877) 252-4549. Seems very interesting that they shared numbers and have sequential numbers.

It does appear that Teleblend is updating their FAQ and other sites with tidbits of info. For instance, it now says that the $12.95 plan will become $19.95 after your SR contract period ends.

In the end, I think you have to assume that Teleblend in the end will be SunRocket for the most part (less some of the execs hopefully). While SR has had financial troubles (to say the least) I haven't had any problems with my $8/month phone service (that I didn't create myself). So, while I'm sure I'd have some if switched to Teleblend, I'm definitely sure I'd have immediate problems/delays in porting to a new provider.

I just want keep my phone active with the phone number I've had for years. Also, I'd like to know my options on porting to a new provider if I do go to Teleblend. I haven't been able to get through to the sales folks today. Guess I'll keep trying..

I had SunRocket and was happy with it until my calls started cutting out on Monday. I still had service, but on Wednesday ordered Vonage. They told me that I have two months free service and after that can sign up for the same $199 per year that I was happy with.

They sent out equipment, but since I had a retail purchased Vonage modem, I was able to hook it up myself right away and their customer service person even switched my old number. So I am all set with Vonage, and highly recommend it.

However, I still will need to go through the credit card investigation to get my August-November refund. I also signed up for Teleblend to tied me over, but cancelled it right away. In the terms, it says you won't be charged if you cancel in three days, however, I may also have to take that to the credit card dispute. I definitely see something weird about the number being disconnected. I hope we all get our money back.

Packet 8- http://ld.net/packet8/?valuefon
Myteleblend- http://www.myteleblend.net/

Guys, many people are having success getting refunds through their credit card companies, especially with Discover and Chase. This may get harder once SR files bankruptcy, so get it done fast. Debit card users may be out of luck depending on how long you've had the service, but it's worth a shot. However, I just transferred my contract to Teleblend (no, it is not out of business), one of the companies SR is sending its customers to. Do your own research because offhand I can't find anything on their site about voicemail, so if that's important to you, you should check into it further. You can keep using the same equipment and there don't appear to be any hidden extra fees, signup fees or anything else. It is $12.95 per month but only through the end of your contract, so be prepared to get billed for Teleblend's annual contract when your original one runs out - and I couldn't find any information on how much their annual service is - not that it would be wise, frankly, to go down that path again. However, for now it is at least a seamless way to buy yourself some time without having to deal with new equipment and signup fees. Really, it was unbelievably easy. I am also looking into Magic Jack, which looks really, really interesting, but Apple users beware - for now, it only works with PC.

I just called MasterCard and they will send me a form to fill out (must be filled within 5-7 business days, I think). MasterCard will file a dispute with SR and will give me "conditional" credit. I asked to prevent further charges from SR. But they said they cannot do this. They will, however, dispute future charges. In my case, I signed up on May 15th 2007. I told MasterCard that all my charges with SR were within 90 days, and that SR was aware of this bankruptcy at that time according to this blog thread.

I am thinking of SKYPE for my phone service. $29 dollars a year. Any comment? I know you cannot get 911 via Skype. But if you have a cell phone, that should be sufficient for 911.

Score: 0

|

Yahoo Voice could be a good option too. 1 cent / min USA wide and about $2.50 /Month per Inbound number...I also filed a claim with my bank but since SR filed the bankrupcy already who knows if they will be able to recover any charge.

I am every bit as upset as all of you are and was very suspicious of the Teleblend website. However, I just spoke w/ them and was told their parent company is USA Telephone (www.savewithusa.com) Their site says: "USA also focuses on the acquisition of young or ailing companies that show promising growth potential and has earned an impressive reputation for the successful transformation and managed growth of many troubled ompanies." This seems to make sense if they came in to take over operations for SunRocket. The $12.95 charge is monthly and you can cancel at anytime, so I'm signing up for now, if nothing else to buy time to find new service.

Also, I called my credit card company and they are pursuing fraud charges. They seemed to think they could get a refund for me, but nothing is guaranteed yet. As others have said, I'd suggest calling your bank asap. Good luck.

I just spoke with a Teleblend Rep. Here's the deal. They're one week old, their parent company is a privately held company - USA-tel which is about the same size as SunRocket (200,000 customers).

There are NO Sunrocket execs at Teleblend, it's a totally different company. I asked him about the similar website, phone number, etc. and he assured me it's a completely different company - set up to make switching very easy. He said Voice Mail should be up and running in a few days, as well as the website. It's not a big investment, I'm going with them and we'll see. Even though this is a fiasco, I'm still so very grateful not to have to deal with Verizon again!

By the way, thanks for the info on getting our annual fee back thru the cc company. I literally paid mine on July 19th!

Sun-Rocket has been a Godsend for many people who do not even realize what they did or attempted to do for the average U.S. citizen. One day they may be credited with finally breaking the monopoly that has been held by Ma Bell for decades. The same one that is now being reinvented and reinstated by A.T&T,Cingular and Bell South.

I for one am thankful that I was given at least a brief respite from the burgoning taxes and add on charges that the Ma Bell companies have beat us with for years! Thank you Sun-Rocket for showing the way to affordable phone service. If you ever start over I hope to be one of your very first customers!

I do not understand what went on that you had to shut down so quickly but for one am very happy that you existed at all. I have now joined Tele-Blend untill things cool down and have not lost service at all! I hope that this new company, set up for convenience or what ever continues to have the same effect on the big monopolistic companies such as Ma-bell and yes Comcast and others that Sun Rocket had. They truly did make prices reasonable and yes made service better (not just as good as)and finally gave the poor working class among us a true choice!

I am not and have never been affiliated with a telecommunications company other than as a customer! I say God Bless you Sun Rocket and I truly hope that whoever created you is still working in the lead or behind the scene to give the average U.S. citizen an honest and affordable phone service at an affordable rate! I think that Joi Internet has a truly great offering on voip I may try them. They were great as an ISP.
