RSSWatermark Helps Track Movie Uploader

A man who allegedly uploaded a copy of the movie "Flushed Away" to the Internet was tracked down using a wartermark on the film and now faces a felony charge that could send him to prison for up to three years. 27 year-old Salvador Nunez Jr. obtained the movie from his sister, an Oscar voter.
Nunez admitted to also uploading "Happy Feet," but only "Flushed Away" was discovered on his hard drive when FBI agents visited his house. Movie screeners, which are sent to voters in advance of their official DVD release, are often leaked to the Internet and watermarking technology has recently been implemented to track their source.

My team of errrr... "Software Technicians" are currently testing our beta program to strip any info that could be used to track (including embedded watermarks) any digital content. This is being developed for audio (mp3s) as well as movies.
So far the program works very well with a few bugs, it will be released soon. Check my forum for updates.

I'm sure they do. We should just let the small-time criminals go. I mean, it's not like they killed anyone...and we have better things to do, right?
You seem to be under the impression that the FBI only handles the big stuff. They do much more than that. One of the things they do quite frequently is help local police and other authorities in cases such as this.
Think of it this way: Local authorities would have to spend thousands to track people like this down. The FBI already has the resources.
In effect, they're probably getting it done cheaper than leaving to the locals.

I just dont like the Government Micro -Managing the computer world. There are bigger fish to go after. It seems like the cause of the Government is to protect the movie industery from Hairy Home Owner who happens to like a movie so much, he copies it to his computer library and lets say he sends it to his friend. YES he broke some law. I just do not think the FBI should come knocking on his door ...

Some people will read anything into anything apparently. They are exempting certain uses previously interpreted as legal under the Copyright Fair Use clause. That is all. The article does not restrict the application of DRM in any way and does not infringe on the rights of the copyright holders.

This is the correct way to fight piracy, since the actions of the people who are suppose be only people who view these releases, costs people money.
After it gets to the market, its another story, and additional choices to combat piracy should and does increase.
