Western Digital offers yet another pocket-sized HDD

Western Digital today introduced a new series of portable USB hard drives with capacities as high as 320 GB in a package comparable in size to a Nintendo DS Lite.
The My Passport USB drive series was redesigned to complement WD's line of My Book external drives, and have a footprint of 5.1" x 3.14" x .6" and weigh only 5 ounces. They range in capacity from 60-320 GB.
These 2.5-inch 5400 RPM hard drives are bus powered and promise the USB 2.0 transfer speed of 480 Mb/sec. Obviously, speed of transfer is not this device's strong point among a field of many competitors. However, the unit's small size, coupled with its large capacity narrow down the competition slightly.
With solid state memory becoming more spacious as well as affordable, we will likely see solutions like WD's USB HDD becoming even cheaper. Currently, these units retail for as little as $79.99 for the 80 GB unit (the 60 GB mysteriously costs $89) and as much as $229.99 for the 320 GB model.

|I've got a couple of these. I got the 80 GB version a few years back (before they shrunk it!) and love it. Works great to hold personal stuff at work.
We also went and got my wife one (the 120GB just over a year ago) for her stuff around the house (so she can port it between the various computers she uses). Works great.
The ruggeddized packaging they used works great and really helps it hold up. I know they've been dropped a few times without any issues.

|I use my crappy sounding dinosoar called the 80GB iPod as a nice backup drive. I actually like the fact that I can store a lot of data and music and treat it more like a hard drive that plays MP3's.
This thing is making itself more useful all the time. The tiny Nano I bought my wife for Christmas as really making me want to buy another one for myself.
I did the same thing after I bought my daughter a pink DS Lite with the R4 card. I have a second card but getting a DS in any color is impossible right now. I want an onyx black or silver one, no hurry.

|I currently have the 120GB version of this drive and for what it is, it rocks. The greatest thing about it is the lack of power supply. It seems to perform well and can actually take a bit of a beating. Not sure on the $229 price for 320GB...but I am sure if we wait a bit it will be a little more reasonable.

|Look nice, I wonder if they let you put your Mp3's on there.

|Huh? It's a hard drive, you can put whatever you want on them. That said though I wouldn't give that much money for one just because it is small and trendy looking. I can get a 750GB hard drive for less and put it in my own USB enclosure.

|I have one of the 80Gb drives. I bought it about a year ago when it was at $99. I love the smaller compact size as it's easier to take around to a friends house to copy his movi... I mean documents.
Having said that, I also bought the 500gb MyBook drive for $99 on black friday. It's hooked up to my PS3 and it plays nice with Remote Play on the PSP anywhere in the world.
The 2 work together well but I agree with you that $229 for the 320gb is too much.

|They recently came under fire because the software that came with the My Book drives wouldnt allow Mp3's.

|I think it was a little more complicated than that.
The software that came with the drive would not allow you to send these files (mp3's and video files) over the internet. BUT, the use of this software was not required for use.
So you can pretty much put what ever you want in the drives and do whatever you want with them.... as long as you don't use the software that came with the drives.
Which is incredibly stupid but still good drives.
