By Aaron Dobbins | Published November 7, 2000, 12:37 AM
MSDN subscribers can now get their hands on the Beta 1 of Windows Whistler, the next version of Windows expected to hit retail stores near the end of next year. Whistler Beta 1, sent to testers last week, is the first step in Microsofts Windows .Net strategy, and encorporates a host of new features and functions. Look for more information about the new operating system to emerge as the beta cycle continues. Visit MSDN to download Whistler Beta 1 if you are a subscriber.

|I downloaded it. Then I sat on the freshly burnt CD-R for two days. Finally I thought, what the hell, and I installed it. Beautiful! It reported prior to actual installation that my Intel Pro Cam would no longer work, however it worked flawlessly. I tried a DVD in my DVD player and it appeared that my CD detector (if you have DVD you know what I mean) was gone. So I started to go run it manually, and I actually started the app, PowerDVD. And it ran fine. But about that time the 'Autoplay' kicked in and the built in DVD plpayer took off. Coolness. Very clean interface. No big garish displays. I un-installed PowerDVD at once (Sorry guys.)
Everything continued to work just fine. Except. My 'Nero Burning ROM' program that came with my CD-R Drive won't run. I need a Windows 2000 Player. Maybe even the new 'Nero, but I am shopping around.
Man this new OS is too cool. I cannot begin to describe...

|There is a tremendous amount of support for new devices in Whistler. I have a CDR Drive in my computer and when I installed whistler I right-clicked on a file and selected "Send to - CD Writer" and it automatically burned the file to the CD RW disc that I had in there. Then I right-clicked the Drive and there was an option to format the CD RW disc, that was improved. I selected the option and it installed some Adaptec Software and everything worked fine. As far as the "I wish I could press CTRL-ALT-DELETE key and hit the space bar quickly to lock the computer"....It does that in Server. Also, server starts with the standard Windows interface, other than the new Whistler one. There is a tool in Professional called "Migrate" or something??? Well, it is found in System Tools. Check it out if you get a chance. What kind of a beta tester deletes an OS after checking it out for an hour....retard. That's not testing, you should be banned from this site. Whistler also natively supports DSL and other broadband connections on Professional through Network and Dial-up Connections.

|Also, when you hit control-alt-delete while inside whistler, it pops up the task manager without actually hiding any of the desktop. (nice..) The Memory usage is about 221mb. (not so nice.) Luckily I have 512mb.

|Sure it is. CTRL-ALT-DEL usually pops up the Windows Security window where you can lock the desktop, log off, shut down, change password, etc... And it's annoying that Whistler pops up the task manager now. It was nice to be able to "CTRL-ALT-DEL, pause, SPACE" as a very fast way to lock the workstation when walking away from it. Hopefully they'll switch it back or provide some alternate means of bring that dialog box up.

|I am MSDN subscriber and thus downloaded and installed Windows Whistler this morning. The big change in the next iteration of Windows seems to be the unser interface, but I believe it still needs alot of work.
Is it just me or is the current "skin" missing? I mean the OS looks naked to me, as if the skin is missing. All the windows are bright white and that new titlebar doesn't seem very catchy either (why not the one from the new MSN ?). I know this is beta1, but alot of work needs to be done and their is only one more beta before the RCs come out. Seems to me that MS is gonna need a beta3.
Compared to the MacOS X, this UI is way behind, and too many options are popping up in way to many places. They have to simplify things.
One thing that I do like is the logon screen. HTML-like, simple and very nice. Stability wise, it's ok so far, although I didn't install anything big so far, but UT did work fine.
Can way to see beta2, hopefully before Christmas... and way better than beta1.
Score: 0
|I have been running Whistler since it started, and I'll tell you that it's coming along fine. One skin doesn't make a difference, there are going to be several skins added into it in the future. Also, I noticed that about 95 % of my EA Sports games worked in Whistler and they never worked in Windows 2000 before. The OS is perfect. Regardless of what anyone has to say, i'm buying it when it's out, it's been the best Windows OS ever.

|Does Whistler support ICS Internet Connection Sharing? I just downloaded it from the MSDN from here at work but I have no machines available here to load it on. I figured I would try it at home but I need ICS for my other PC's on my home network.
Thanks
Score: 0
|Of course it includes ICS, it also includes a basic personal firewall.
This far, performance wise its quite disapointing, right after installing it, it uses around 130Mb of RAM (Whistler Pro), while Win2K Pro only uses about 60. One of the reasons is that IIS is installed by default with nearly all components loaded.
The enhanced interface is pretty nice but I had to disable fading effects due to slowdowns (with an Athlon 900, geez)
Stability wise, I've only had one BSOD, related to a bad WDM sound driver implementation (it occured at the beginning of a netmeeting session)
Oh btw, be prepared for a long install, it took it about a whole hour to install on an U2W SCSI drive (IBM 18Gb 7.2k rpm) on an Adaptec 29160 card

|Well, keep in mind it has tons of debug code and whatnot. Win2000 beta was a LOT slower than the RTM version of it.
