Wii continues video game dominance in December

By Ed Oswald | Published January 18, 2008, 11:26 AM

The Wii continued to lead video game console sales in December, but the Xbox 360 wasn't far behind. Also, the PS3 showed significant improvement.

Data from NPD showed that overall software sales increased 36 percent over last year. Hardware sales gains were a little more modest at 17 percent, however that is still a significant gain considering consumers pulled back on holiday spending.

The Wii sold some 1.35 million units, ending the year with 6.3 million sold in the US. Second was the Xbox 360 with 1.26 million for the month and 4.6 million for the year.

Perhaps the most notable news from December data was the resurgence of Sony, which seems to indicate the console's price was the biggest inhibitor to sales. 797,600 units sold during December -- its best month ever -- and 2.6 million were sold during 2007.

The most popular games in December were Call of Duty 4, which sold 1.5 million units. Second was Super Mario Galaxy with 1.4 million units, and Guitar Hero III for the PlayStation 2, which sold 1.25 million copies was third.

Rounding out the top five was Wii Play, selling one million, and Madden NFL 08 selling 655,000.

NPD said the top selling game of 2007 was Halo 3, selling 4.8 million copies in the US, while Wii Play took the runner up spot with 4.1 million units.

I was lucky enough to wait and get an Elite at Halo launch, which is whisper quiet and barely gets warm. I gave my other 360, which i bought in Dec 2006 to my daughter, who never plays it because I bought a Wii for Christmas.

When talking with other players on 360 Live, I have heard of people on thier fourth and fifth consoles. All were people who bought 360's at launch.

Now to the Wii. After buying it in October, but waiting until Christmas to open it up and play it, it has become a great way for the four of us to have fun together (Me, my wife, and two daughters). Wii Sports (bowling) is still the most played game, although we have already purchased a half dozen others like Wii Carnival, Horsez 2 etc....

I bought two extra controllers after Christmas and two of the recharchable bases that come with 2 rechargable batteries just so we could charge every controller. You need four controllers unless you like taking that strap off your wrist every time you want to give someone a shared controller.

The Wii is definiely the most fun console money can buy. The 360 is a more "personal" console as most games are played solo. The Opera web browser is pretty good but it requires a lot of panning around the screen for certain websites. It's a nice addition for five dollars (500 points).

If you have a family or a lot of freinds that hang out, the Wii is the best "party" console there is. We have the Super Bowl coming up at my house and it will probably be a repeat of Christmas where everybody stayed very late to play Wii Sports.

No DVD playback, no CD playback, and no one seems to care. The Wii will continue to sell out for another year as the are impossible to find once again. Every store is devoid of consoles and accessories. A Nintendo tactic of shipping very low numbers to keep the "perceived demand" high. Even controllers and Wii points cards are sparce.

I just wish I had this kind of enthusiasm for my PS3.

Lastly, if anyone has a DS, the Revolution R4 is probably the coolest thing you can buy. I play the DS a lot simply because I have a SNES / NES emulator, MP3's, movies, and dozens of GBA and DS games all on one 4GB Micro SD.

You have to convert movies to a certain format but it's still pretty cool.

It's early days yet. This is a long term strategy for Sony, and now with Blu ray tightening its grip on the HD front, it can only get better.

Wii - 6.3 million
Xbox 360 - 4.6 million
PS3 - 2.6 million

Ouch! That's just real embarrassing for Sony. I recall a couple of months back when all the rabid Sony fans were convinced the PS3 was going to totally outsell the Wii and Xbox 360 during the holidays. I just laughed and said "let's wait and see what happens" and well, here we are. :)

I actually just ordered my PS3 tonight from SonyStyle.com. You get their credit card and they will do a $100 credit to your bill in a month if you make a purchase of $299 or more. You also get 12 months no interest.

After the Blu-Ray announcements during CES, and looking at total cost of ownership, it looked like PS3 was my best option. It has the games I want anyway, COD4 and WWE Raw vs. Smackdown, along with Unreal Tournament and the Godfather game. Not to mention GTAIV when it comes out.

I bought WWE Raw and Medal of Honor Airborne with an extra controller as part of the deal. COD4 was backorder with NCAA '08. Any other suggestions on games I should get? I like realistic more than fantasy (e.g. alien shoot 'em ups and the like). I'm also not big on racing games. Kane & Lynch any good?

Is Resistance:Fall of Man any good?

Personally I wasn't impressed with Resistance. You could always give the demo a shot though if you are in doubt. I would give Warhawk and Uncharted a rent and see how you like them.

The Wii is a unique experience, unlike anything else. You look past the simple graphics very quickly as you get immersed in a game as simple as Wii bowling.

The menu music and GUI is very futuristic but simple, it reminds me of something out of Epcot Center. I also noticed the new 360 blade menu (automatic update) and buttons are ugly as sin. They are trying to copy Sony, who's menu system is about as engaging as the prospect of a barium enema.

I liked the photorealistic gloss buttons versus the 2D white shapes like Sony uses.

Anyone else hearing of failing M$ XBox 360's, even after being fixed? A buddy of mine had his box brick for the second time two nights ago. His had bricked early last year and he had it "fixed".

Anyhow, he said he was done with M$ and had his wife pick up a Wii with Mario Galaxy and Metroid. I told him i could not blame him, i would be pissed too if i had two 360's brick on me.

Even the newest falcons are not that robust. Better than the originals, but still flakey.

It's worth pointing out, that in North America, 2.6 million sales is good, as it's the weakest territory, in Europe sales for PS3 are very strong, as is Japan.

Over 8 million PS3's worldwide, and with Blu-ray's secured HD market dominance, that it surely going to acceletate..

I agree. Blu winning will only help PS3 sales. It's a win-win for sony.

It looks like Blu-Ray is up to 85% dominating over HDDVD's 15%.

So far no problems with my most recent replacement, but thats definitely not to say that it wont go through the same sh!t. Either way I know I'm covered until 2009.

Wow, so it sounds like the machines are just totally defective...why else would they send you a totally new one?

Actually no, it's not really worth pointing out. Last I checked, the home turf (Japan) was also a weak territory for Sony. Nintendo has been mopping the floor with Sony every month and I doubt December was an exception. It's very comical to see you Sony zealots try and put a positive spin on the PS3 sales, even though it comes in DEAD LAST behind the Wii and Xbox360 every single quarter. I've asked this many times and yet no Sony fan has been able to explain it to me, how is the PS3 catching up to the Wii and Xbox360 when it's being OUTSOLD EVERY SINGLE MONTH IN WORLD WIDE SALES?? Yet you Sony clowns seem to believe this to be the case.

Actually, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 in worldwide sales for quite some time. The only place in the world the 360 is selling is America.

Remember, the 360 was rushed out a full year ahead of the Wii and the PS3 due to the total failure of the first XBox. The fact the Wii has outsold the 360, despite its year+ headstart is quite impressive.

I agree, the Wii is tiny and easy to hide. You can mount it behind or to the back most plasmas so the side with the disc slot and eject buttons are visible. Mine slides out from behind the TV and the only visible part is the sensor bar on the bottom.

A friend of mine custom built it using gas charged drawer slides. He is the best custom fabricator I have ever met when it comes to motorizing and modifying elecronics. When you slide it back behind the TV, it stops and the last inch or so slowly pulls back in by itself.

I'll post a pic if anyone is interested.

God forbid you have to go a week without video games. There was a point where I didnt play my 360 for almost a month.

Only someone with no real life would be pissy about losing thier console for a week. If video games are that important to people, than they need to come to terms with the fact that they are and always will be losers.

Just like those people who are over 25 and still smoke dope. Not one of them that I know will ever amount to anything and will work for someone else thier entire life. the funny thing is, these are the same people who play games as soon as they get home from work until two hours before they have to go back.
