Windows 2000 SP2 Slips Out the Door

By Nate Mook | Published May 11, 2001, 4:19 PM

UPDATED While an official announcement has yet to be made, the long-awaited second service pack for Windows 2000 is now available from Microsoft. As always, this latest service pack incorporates updates to improve security, application and hardware compatibility, Windows setup, and system stability. SP2 does not include any new features according to the software giant, simply fixes and updates. Expect more information shortly on the SP2 Web site, and here on BetaNews. Update: Microsoft has posted SP2 release notes and installation information. The 101MB Network install and the much smaller Express install are now available via FileForum.

My question: Do these patches need to be re-applied or does the HFCINST need to be updated? (most likely)

So far I have applied SP2 on four Win2k machines, two Pro, one server, one Advanced server. All have seen significant improvments in memory useage, network performance, and the GUI is much more responsive.

On the Advanced Server installation, it is the Primary ADC, it runs Exchange 2000, IIS 5.0, and Windows Media services (intranet only on all services) Before SP2 average memory footprint was 380MB. Post SP2 it averages 220MB. That is a huge improvement! Also, the amount of clients that the Windows Media Services could support has increased so I suspect a huge network performance increase was made with SP2.

As for the two Pro installations, the GUI is much more responsive, have seen frame rate increases in Quake, lower memory footprint, and faster GUI overall. SP2 is a go as far as I am concerned.

I installed SP2 on a Compaq Armada M300 and a Dell inspiron8000 both running Windows2000 Professional. I noticed that both machines seemed to be a bit faster in menu selections and program executions. I have not noticed any adverse affects form SP2 Yet! Overall it seems to be a good service pack, unlike SP2 in WindowsNT 4.0!

I installed SP2 on Win 2K Server. After installing SP2, the server took FOREVER to boot up whenever I would reboot it. There was also a problem with the floppy drive. About every 5 minutes or so the floppy drive would act like it was looking for a disk (for no reason that I could see). I uninstalled SP2 and the server seems to be working with no problems after the uninstall. Also installed SP2 on my laptop which is running Win 2K Pro. Got a BSOD on the first reboot after install. Rebooted again and it came up OK. Laptop seems to be working with no problems now.

Before applying SP2, I can re-hibernate my system (start a new session, hibernate the system, take it out of hibernation, and hibernate the system again) without any problem. I can repeat the rehibernation as many time as I like without any problem. Same thing goes after I applied SP1. However, after applying SP2, I can only hibernate a new session ONCE, any re-hibernation attempts caused the system to freeze at the "Preparing to hibernate..." screen. Do any of you have any idea of what caused it and how to get around the problem? Please help...

If Stand-by/Hibernation works OK the first time but hangs in the "Preparing to ..." phase the second time, you probably installed Nero 5.5. Revert to Nero 5.0 and the problem will disappear. Now what's amusing is that W2K SP2 and Nero 5.5 released at about the same time... I suppose many people installed both and attributed the bug to W2K? Or is there a real W2K bug that happens to have the same symptoms as the Nero 5.5 bug?

It's not Nero. The only change I made to the system was installing SP2, which broke hibernation. Today I reverted to SP1, which fixed hibernation.

So it's definitely a SP2 problem.

Prior to installing XP Beta 2, I was running Win2K, and then Win2K SP1, for over a year, using hibernation often, and had never had a problem. I just applied the sp2 patch on win2k server. The response time seemed to get faster. But the problem I had with the installation is that after the system hibernates and I move my mouse, I get a frequency out of range messege on my screen. But when I hit alt+ctrl+del it puts me back to the logon window. And the second time the system hibernates, the system freezes.

Looks great, seems to work faster BUT when I installed this I lost my networking completely. I have P4 1.5 with plenty of disk and 750Mb memory on a home LAN with a D-Link Router to DSL. Also have a Win 98 PC on the LAN. Installed the update and could "see" the 98 PC but could not access the shared drives. Started Mail - could not see mail server. Started IE - could not find sites. Win 98 PC worked OK with Internet but could not see this PC. Checked network settings and nothing seemed to have changed. Tested bypassing router & LAN and resetting Network ID (used to work OK) - still not working over Internet. All network settigs looked the same (Netstat and IPCONFIG). Reset network settings to original, reconnected to LAN and uninstalled this update. Bingo LAN and Internet work perfectly. Reinstalled again - lost LAN and Internet. Frustrated - went and uninstalled again and back to square one.

UPDATED: Less than a week before the expected release of Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2), servers operated by Conxion made the 101MB SP2 download available to the public at the request of Microsoft, which wished to seed the release to its closest partners. SP2 is the long-awaited second major collection of Win2K bug fixes, which was originally due about 2 months ago. According to the README notes accompanying this release, "Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 is a collection of updates that fixes issues in the Windows 2000 operating system. I looked at the Microsoft website but they say nowhere that they have released service pack 2 for Windows 2000. So the one all you fooks have downloaded and installed is the Release Candidate Service Pack 2. So not the official one! Or is someone out there who could prove me the opposite?

Score: 0

But the download is directly from MS web site, so it can't be RC.

Score: 0

I just talked with my Microsoft rep, and he assures me that the SP2 posted on this site, is not the official release version, and is only a RC.

Just an FYI..

Well... where else would you expect to get a Windows 2000 service pack, release candidate or not?

The indication that it is most likely "final" is that it is on the conxion servers. It probably wouldn't be there unless it was the final version.

this release IS the final SP2, even though it's not official yet.

After installing the SP2, I noticed that my other computer's internet access went down. Some how, my Remote Access Connection manager service is now dead. That's required to run internet connection sharing. :( It won't start for crap. Anyone run into the same problem? Any suggestions?

Here is some info on how to integrate the servicepack with the Windows install files for those that haven't installed Windows 2000 yet and want to do so with SP2.

How do you do this with sp2? I tried and it said "not all files are avaible" Please advize.

Score: 0

1: Download the network version of w2ksp2.exe

2: With Winzip installed; right click on the SP2 file and select "Extract to..." and type C:\SP2

3: Create a folder in the C: directory named "Win2K" and copy all the files on the Win2k CD into this folder

4: Open a dos window and type "cd C:\SP2\i386\update\"

5: type "update -s:c:\Win2K" (no spaces between the switch and the location)

6: Burn the contents of the Win2K folder back onto CD and voila! you have a bootable Win2K CD with SP2 already applied

thanks!

I read this with GREAT interest! However, would this make the CD bootable in DOS mode as well? I.e. a clean install with nothing on the HD? Also, do you need to implement SP1 on the same image first, and how do you go about doing that?

Score: 0

Bootable means a BIOS that supports booting off a CD-ROM drive will recognize the media as something that can load an operating system. It doesn't have anything to do with DOS.

Win2K CD is bootable by default... so if I apply the SP2 on the CD's installation files and burn the new set on a CD, will the newly burned CD be bootable in nature to allow clean installs? Please clarify...

No. Check out this URL for instructions on how to create a bootable Windows 2000 CD:

Hello, I tried your step by step instruction and it seems to have worked fine, except for one thing. The cd that I created wont boot. The original win2k cd boots fine but the new one doesn't, it fails to boot from cdrom. I did exactly what you said and I used Easy CD Creater 5 platinum, added the contents of the win2k folder to the cd and then burned it. Why wont it boot? I would Like to do a fresh install clean format.

just check the article out... according to that article, i'll need CDRWIN, but CDRWIN does NOT support my Lite-on burner.... so is there any other article that i can refer to?

Score: 0

to make the Cd bootable after slipstreaming Sp2 you have to use cdrwin ( demo available at www.download.com ) and follow directions on this page http://www.thetechguide.com/win2kbootcd/ screen shots and everything included there it works perfect if you follow the directions word by word.

Absolutely no probs, made a clean install of win2k, slapped the sp on right away, and noticed an instant pickup in speed, also, memory management seems a definate area of improvement, as an average memory load of 200mb / 384mb has decreased to 130mb ave, i was dead impressed, also a distinct increase in framerates in all games (i.e quake 2 / black and white)

Also now that SP2 is out Creative labs has no excuse for not releasing LW4.

version from before that wouldnt all winodows update. It had filter fail as well. We will give them a few days. They havent asked me about beta for BID this time but I guess thats because my sub must of ran out. NS I guess that means I will get ZA since I have been running in XP for a while and it seems to be just a little bit more comprehensive. Anybody using anything else? ICF in XP still needs some
