Windows 2000 SP3 Released to Web

Microsoft on Tuesday posted the final version of Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, a much anticipated update that entered beta testing last November. Although Premier Customers were given first access to download the release, links to SP3 quickly began circulating the Web. Microsoft will make SP3 available to the public Thursday via Windows Update, as well as on CD.
"SP3 is a well-tested collection of updates that focuses on a variety of customer-reported concerns with the Windows 2000 family of operating systems," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews Tuesday afternoon.
Service Pack 3 includes a slew of fixes and minor feature updates, along with support for automatic upgrades. With SP3, network administrators can set Windows 2000 to automatically download or schedule updates to the operating system.
"In many ways, SP3 is a traditional service pack in that it includes enhancements to improve upon Windows 2000's reliability, compatibility and security. In addition, Microsoft is fulfilling its commitment to implement the changes required by the consent decree signed with the DoJ and nine settling states," said the spokesperson.
The full Service Pack 3 network installation weighs in at 124MB and may be downloaded via FileForum. A smaller express installation will be available starting Thursday. The German language version of SP3 is also available, with more languages expected shortly.
I have updated 3 computers now.
2 worked great with standard IDE.
The 3rd is a gigabyte 7DXR+ with a promise Raid onboard setup.
Nothing but blue screens when using & trying to access drives even from another computer over the network.
Went back to ghost before update & all is well again.
Becareful if you have a Raid setup & do a backup before updating to SR3 just in case.

|Hmm...That's odd. I upgraded 6 systems with that same 7DXR+ board to SP3, and there were no problems whatsoever. All the systems are using the onboard Promise RAID controller.

|Do you have Raid 0 setup on these 6 boards or just using the Promise controller without a raid setup?
The SP3 could be clashing with something else I already have installed mabey. Antivirus etc.
I have seen on a few forums were people with raid setups are having similar issues.

|Anyone who has an Abit Motherbaord with an ONBOARD Highpoint 370 or higher controller should STAY AWAY from Service Pack 3. It installs the "HPT3XXNT.SYS" driver instead of the correct "HPT3XX2K.SYS" and will blue screen your systems and endlessly reboot them until you do a repair from the Windows 2000 CD. I had the SAME problem with an Intel and an AMD server yesterday, so ther is no doubt that they included the wrong driver with Service Pack 3. The Intel system had the 370 and the AMD had the 372.

|Up Microsoft's asses? What are you some kind of fake linux hax0r who doesnt understand that linux will never NEVER take over the market? It's ok..don't cry the truth hurts, you can run all the linux you want, go get your linux+ cert too, because its useless, companies will never switch to linux, the only server you may end up running is an apache server, which can run on unix boxes anyway, like SUN ever heard of them...
This article is clearly directed to client side computers, i will s*** my pants the day we start training EU's in linux.
There is no room for linux on client end computing.

|I have noticed .NET framework as an option in Windows update for a while but decided not to install. After installing SP3 it has disappeared from Windows update. Is SP3 just a vehicle to push .NET on our desktops?
Score: 0
|No, the .NET Framework is not included with SP3. Windows Update's detection may not have been updated yet to recognize that the .NET Framework is available for installation on SP3.

My last 56k dial up ISP disconnected me every 2 hours, was a big pain in the ass, especially on mIRC.
Well, during my experience, i realized that downloading big files that are so compact, so fragile as a Windows installation, the download has to be 100% consistant, with no drops in connection and try to get the lowest possible retrys.
Internet Explorer is probably one of the best to download files without a problem, i've never experienced a single problem with downloading via IE, but the speeds are just too slow, and there's no "proper" resume.
I've tried nearly every single download manager out there, and by far, *with the correct settings*, the default settings are poor!
Flashget was the best, i've been using Flashget since v0.85, about 1 and a half years and never had a incorrect download or any problems getting my downloads done.
I recommend you try Flashget to download your file, DAP & DLexpert gave more problems then i ever experienced with Flashget.
www.amazesoft.com
Flashget use to be "Spyware", thus with Ad-aware to remove the advertisments, was "Free", but is now "Shareware" and expires after 30 days, but within that time, Flashget is fully functional, more then enough time to get the file in question :)
Contact me at GimieGimieGimie@hotmail.com if you have any questions/problems with anything i just said, i'll even give you a older version of Flashget that isn't shareware :)
Goodluck!

|Ok.. I just have to put in my two cents on this.....
the Anti-Trust law suit.... wasn't Microsfot suppose to give the option to "REMOVE IE, media player, and outlook Express" from workstations with SP3 installed?????
I put the SOP on test the removal feature, and you know what, all the removal tool does is "REMOVE ICONS!!!!" Unbeleiveable!!!!!!
Please someone comment on this......

|they had to remove IE etc. from the users use (so they cant see, use it etc) however it doesnt mean they have to remove it from the system. Basically all they had to do was make it so IE NEVER load unless the user runs iexplore.exe from the programs folder. They did kind take the piss a little it has to be said.

|REMOVING IE would break tons of apps.
Score: 0
|It does a little bit more than remove icons. It allows 3rd party apps (which are written to the published specification) to be made the default browser, media player, mail client, etc. without any interference. For example, prior to SP3, even if you made Real Player your default player for all media types, there are situations where Windows Media Player could step back in (such as when playing media inside of IE's media side bar) without explicit permission.
Not only would many parts of Windows break if IE components were entirely removed, but many third party apps would break, too. There's a reason that so many third parties redistribute IE on their CDs and require a minimum IE version to be installed.

Makes interesting reading. Personally, I wouldn't trust MS to install whatever "management" software or "updates" they choose to my PC, without my consent, without my knowledge.

|I don't know if this is a new feature introduced in service pack 3, but after installing it, I added a PCI SCSI card that connects to a scanner. I restarted, and waited for the "New Hardware Found" message, followed by either a prompt for the drivers, or the usual "installing drivers" dialog boxes. Well, nothing happened. I then looked at my list of hardware devices and lo and behold, there was the scsi card and the scanner, both of which were correctly tested (and seem to work fine). Should this have happened? Anyone else have this happen yet? Should I be concerned, or have we finally gotten to the point where Plug and Play is finally working the way it should be?

|If the system has the correct drivers and you have not setup a group policy to disable plug and play then it should work like it has done for you :)

|Well, service pack 3 went on all my other machines fine except for the machine with this IBOT firewire webcam connected to my sbaudigy. After installing sp3 whenever i go to use the cam the system will bluescreen with a K_Mode exception error, listing Ntoskern and tidcam.sys as the culprits of the crash. I tried this on several machines and it always happens. Amoung the fixes in sp3 were a lot of firewire driver updates and file updates, i'm wondering if this could be the reason why it's not working. I uninstalled sp3 and went back to sp2 and the cam works fine once again. It's a recently fresh install of the OS, so I'm sure it's not configuration related or software related. I tried several different cam programs and all of them produce the same crash. Well, besides that, sp3 works fine but i won't be able to use it on my main machine until either the webcam manufacturer or microsoft admit to the problem :)

|personally i think that sounds like a driver issue. Perhaps your current drivers are designed only for Windows 2000 SP2, check the manufactuers site over the next week or so and email support to see if any SP3 drivers are in development. I had a similar issue with an old tv card only supporting Windows 2000 Build 2195, when i installed SP1 it BSOD when i tried to access the device, 2 weeks like the company had a driver update which worked with SP1.

|Try installing old version drivers on the new ones (disconnect web cam install SP3, then install drivers, then connect Webcam) - this must do the trick...

|Got my hands on it (Network version) yesterday and installed it. Didn't take too long. So far so good. Most noticeable is the "Set Program Access and Defaults" link under Start Menu, the result of the anti-trust lawsuits and the agreement reached thereafter. Very interesting. The boot process is slightly faster, but then again, I have yet to test it on a desktop. My laptop is cluttered with all kinds of programs that could adversely affect performance. Might test it on a clean install of W2K and see what happens.
