RSSWindows Live OneCare 2.0 in Beta

Microsoft has released a beta version of Windows Live OneCare 2.0, its anti-malware and maintenance software. The update adds support for monitoring the status of other PCs on a network, as well as a new firewall that adjusts its settings automatically depending on the security of the network.
OneCare 2.0 can also perform PC maintenance tasks, including clearing a jammed print job and listing what applications are causing a system to be slow to boot up. 64-bit compatibility is new in version 2.0 as well. Windows Live OneCare is offered as a subscription service for a yearly rate of $49.95 USD, which covers up to three PCs in a home.
They should rather work on fixing the security flaws in Windows than wasting more time on this garbage!

|Ok this program bothers me on the basis of principle, Microsoft is selling us a program to make their own program safer, its like Microsoft cutting you and then selling you a band aid. I don't like any anti virus programs, but I understand their inherent uses. The last thing I will do is pay Microsoft for something like this. Plus the last time I checked Live care 1 was rated one of the worst of the lot.

|When you build a house, the builder will also sell you an alarm. Yes, the builder does all he can to put good locks on your doors. But there are always people trying to figure out how to pick the lock. Put a better lock on, maybe two or three. Someone will try harder to break in.
It doesn't matter who builds the house, someone can get in if they want to. This is why the builder sells the alarm with the house.

|At the telcom company I used to work for, we considered rolling out a security suite. When MS announced this product and saw the low price, we soon realized we shouldn't do it. There aren't many people who offer the software + service like this, so we thought we were on to something good. We were actually going to resell someone else's product because there was no way my company could execute. Good ol' McLeodUSA! oooops, did I say their name?

|I've been using OneCare since 1.0 was in early beta, and I've always liked the product. It doesn't bog down my system like Symantec always did.
I've found the firewall service in it to be very intelligent... it bases permissions on a known-good signature set, and if it's not sure it asks... once.
As for the detection rates, yeah, so they "failed" a few tests due to missing 1 virus out of the thousands out there. I've never had it miss anything in the time I've used it, but then again I never visit malicious sites either. Generally, the rates are still very high, and the scanning engine is still much faster than other engines.
I look forward to 2.0.

|Yeah GoodThings2Life, it did miss quite a few viruses in the tests. Again, the newer detections may have changed that (I suspect if it were tested today it would definately rate better than it did before), but back when it was tested, it really did have some problems catching everything.
Let's wait for the new tests on this version and we'll see if Microsoft has some progress since then...

I have been using OneCare since the 1.0 beta and I have not run into any issues with infections either. Keep up the great work MS!

|Basically, the version 1 software was lightweight enough to be above norton, but it had very poor detection rates...or at least when it was tested. I do believe their detection rates have drastically improved since those initial tests a few months back, but sadley, their performance has diminished a bit.
I've recently only been testing OneCare due to the Vista upgrade, and using AVG Free as my 'standard' antivirus, so I can't compare it with other vendors. I'll look into this new version and see what I can come up with as far as detections--maybe it'll find those 3 dozen or so 'agent' trojan varients that it missed in version one. *sigh* So much to do, so little time...

|I beta tested this software and also subscribed to the final version, I run it on three PC's using my wireless network at home.
It performs as advertised, I also got rid of Norton for this product!

|If it's like it's v1.0 version... it's as strong at security as what their OS is.... pretty pathetic.
Other tools on the market whilst they may be a little dearer offer superior protection.
I'm not a big fan of 'one tool does all' but prefer a separate AV, Malware, Firewall product. If one product is then 'weakened' it doesnt take the whole stack down.

|I used the first ones beta and use the version one of it. Got rid of norton for it.
I really like it. Dosen't take over like Norton did. Has been working great for me.
On 3 PCs at home.
