Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 Out
By Ed Oswald | Published August 31, 2006, 3:55 PM
Microsoft on Thursday released a second beta of Windows Media Player 11, providing some performance enhancements, bug fixes and the integration of Windows Media Connect functionality into the player itself. The new feature would allow users to automatically share the contents of their WMP library with compatible devices around the home, the company said in its release notes.
WMP11 Beta 2 also shows continued progress with the player's integration with MTV's music service, URGE. The service is a joint initative between the music network and Microsoft. In addition to the functionality changes and bug fixes, Beta 2 also includes new online stores, including eMusic, VidZone and Music Giants for a total of 14. Microsoft said it expected additional stores to be added before the final release.
Anyone notice that skins no longer work properly?

|the beta1 drm was causing my computer to reboot any time it was loaded by another app (like IE or Firefox).

|i still like winamp. coz it supports all major file formats n use little resouce. can manage them in library as well. like wmp GUI though but no use if u cant import all kinds of files u got.
have any one tested the audio finger printing in wmp 11?

|You can bet your life, hidden in this patch is a fix for the DRM work around.. still its a decent player

|I like the improvements I've noticed so far in WMP Beta 2. Especially the much faster scrolling library, however the album art is smaller, but that's minor.
The main thing that I'm upset about with the transition from Beta 1 to 2 is I lost some of my album art, mainly the ones had manually added. Also for some reason it split some albums up into other albums for some reason.
Still a nice improvement.

|I was just saying that those of us who have Windows Media Center from before 2005 can't use this.

|WMP 11 beta can enter fullscreen by doubleclicking on the video file, but how come we could no longer doubleclick out of it like in WMP 10? I hope they fix that in WMP11 final.

|Your using a Beta version so I'd say a minor bug. There should be a way to report bugs, either in the player itself or their website.

|why another beta? Beta 1 seemed very solid to me (I don't use music stores). It seemed good enough to jump from beta to rtm.
Score: 0
|Theres a difference between "seemed" and "actually" solid. I agree that beta 1 was very nice, but it wasn't perfect either (had a few odd crashes myself) and so far I am even more impressed with beta 2.

|Every software needs to go through a couple of beta stages, to ensure ALL bugs are worked out.
They might also be adding features, since I don't think they feature-freeze until RC stage.

|If it supports all file types upon final release, great, I'll take another look at it. Right now it just makes a mess of my music collection.
Oh, and phenomnaruto, if you think that there is some guarantee that it will support all file types on final release, you have been living in a cave since about 1995.

|I am using vista and media player 11 on my laptop as well as media center. It's actually pretty nice. Media player 11 and vista seems to be coming together. The price has a lot to be desired but, as for this beta 2 release of wmp 11, very nice improvement. The interface is so much cleaner and easy to use I love the visuals with artwork and the organisation of it all.
It's getting there I hope they continue these improvements and not sit on it like they did with xp and wmp 10 not to mention ie6

|beta .... guys its still in beta, you act like they wont make it available for all platforms when its released. So stop whining like little girls.

|What? What happened to "Pre Beta 2"? :)

|Alas, us Media Center Edition users are left in the dust as well. Who knew investing in a MEDIA edition would void any chances of using Windows MEDIA Player.

|WMP 11 is sex itself.
Its sex-y, it doesn't use a lot of ram by today's standards. It's interface while not perfect is much improved. Now they add more choices for music stores?
MS = Winner

|URGE and not another choice. Microsoft continues its assault on removing "personal" from personal computer. However, the same behavior (i.e. iTunes & iPod) also applies to Apple, the company that put the "personal" in personal computer. Where did consumers go wrong to be rewarded with fewer choices instead of more?
Thank goodness for K-Lite.
(PC Tools, this is where you blame it all on counterfeits and people who cannot afford Microsoft's high prices. I even hear you blame global warming on those who dislike paying through the nose for Microsoft products.)

|And what are you smoking today there, ZA?
What other music service would you like?
Did you read this part of the article?
Beta 2 also includes new online stores, including eMusic, VidZone and Music Giants for a total of 14
As for global warming, it's the nautical kind, not the software/music kind. You do know what nautical means, right? (Quick, go Google it!)
The only thing that has arisen recently that I blame on software/music pirates is an increase in ludicrous lawsuits and an abundant source of justification for anyone looking to lock down content or media of any kind.
Sheesh... Some people.
Score: 0
|Perhaps you should place blame where blame is due. All the major record labels have made DRM a requirement for licensing of digital music services. If MS didn't create their own DRM scheme the online digital music services would have used another companies DRM or written their own.
Hey at least they added eMusic. eMusic just sells plain vanilla MP3 files. The inclusion of eMusic in WMP11 should help their popularity and encourage more DRM free services. By including services that don't even use WMA it would appear that MS seems to be encouraging competition.

|Oh my God, that was funny! Thanks! :)

|The problem can't be attributed to pirate-scum. Why? Because regardless of if we have 1 or 100 music stores IN WMP, we still have choice.
