Windows Vista Beta Set for Wednesday

By Nate Mook | Published July 26, 2005, 1:27 PM

Windows VistaSources are reporting that Microsoft will beat its August 3 deadline for delivering Beta 1 of Longhorn, now known as Windows Vista, with a release to testers on Wednesday. Beta 1 is not expected to include the operating system's new name, which will likely be added for a beta refresh due in September for Microsoft's PDC 2005 conference.

Windows Vista Beta 1 will initially be available to a small group of testers via Microsoft's new Connect beta portal. MSDN subscribers will receive access to the first beta bits on August 3. Build 5112 will carry the official Beta 1 label, according to Windows Enthusiast site WinBeta.

Ah! Just re-read the invite which states...

'Please do not select Decline Participation unless you have decided you really don't want to participate.'

So it would appear that if you see this option you've at least been accepted and so I guess I need to now wait for further emails.

I got a spare 866mhz comp with 256mb of memory, and a GeForce 2 MX 400(64mb) in it.

I'd love to try this beta out and see how it performs. I've even get a few ideas for their interface, but I probably won't say anything either unless I get invited.

supposedly it's supposed to run faster than xp. I'll beleive it when I see it. Let me know if it even ran on that machine.

XP runs ok if you turn off all the s*** services and disable the themes. My uncle has a 300mhz laptop with 256mb ram, and it performs quite nicely now that I've wiped it out and installed AVG/Kerio rather than Norton, and done the above mentioned.

If I get my hand on a beta(unlikely), I'll be sure to post how it runs.

As well as to the millions of folks on alt.binaries.warez.ms-beta -or- alt.binaries.wares.ibm-pc.os, and the billions of folks using P2P.

(Actually, last I checked, there was like ... 1 person on ms-beta....posting Windows 1.1, of all things.

I'd be very suprised if this is that different from XPSP2 with Avalon installed.

Simply too much of the meaty goodness has been removed from Vista to make it that revolutionary. I would expect it to be a similar jump from Win2k - XP that XP - Vista is..

Of course, Microsoft could prove me wrong by sending me a beta invite :-)

Yeah, that'll work. Good try, though.

Well you could download it off torrent or any other P2P about an hour after it is seeded out. I am not condoning piracy, but getting a peek at a new OS RC who cares, its not like you can actually use the OS for anything other then taking a peek.

I'll be testing it.

I got the invite a couple of weeks ago but as yet haven't had further emails to say that the download was now available.

I've just logged in to 'Connect' and there is a new option under the actions list that reads 'Decline participation' yet this isn't listed as one of the usual options you should see in the explanation text.

Any others who've had the invite seeing this?
