Not bad, actually. Took IE7 for a test-drive. Aside from noticing all the glaring ads I haven't had to look at sicne Firefox came out, it did pretty well. The tabs acted almost exactly liek they do in FF.

Didn't see a "reload" button. Favorites bar took about 3 seconds to figure out (basically it's the old 'links' bar...not "Favorites"..)

If we can get a free ad=blocking add-on, I'll use it.

dumb question here, does this vista beta have a time expire thing like xp betas did? if so, how long does it last?

I downloaded and tried it for a couple of hours... yeah... I know.. a real test, huh.

It really didn't seem too bad and my tools bars all showed up and worked.

The only issue I found a little strange was it wouldn't show me all my favorites... there wasn't a scroll option... or if there was... I couldn't find it.

I know this is beta... and not bad for a first run... it did seem a little slower than IE6 and is a little awkward at first... but not bad.

I am just use to FF maybe, but I didn't like it at all and felt it was just a bad overlay to the IE6. IMO I wasn't very happy with the layout either and I know it's beta, but unless they change the whole thing to something a little more useful I won't be using it. I didn't like the whole damn thing and if you want to flame me for it then go ahead it shows that you didn't read this. This is my opinion about the beta 1 of IE 7.

Yahoo Mail doesn't work with IE7 as Yahoo complains that it's mail is not optimized for IE7. I appreciate that this is beta...but does anyone know of a workaround?

Ok, I had to give it a shot. What's the point of the MSDN if you don't use it? After rebooting I fired it up... Nothing special here. The look/feel of it is just off. It's a beta, so what can you really expect? Nothing revolutionary. The tabs really aren't 'obvious' enough for n00bs. The address bar (as several have already stated) needs to be thrown under the tabs...or at least customizable. Basically, make it into FireFox/Opera. I'll be interested to see how it works with the Aero UI. For now, it's just a novelty. Handles RSS fine. Not too shabby, not not solid enough to switch from Opera.

All (or most anyhow) of you should hold your judgements until you know facts.

1) IE7 isn't public, so stop whining. It was released to a select number of us that do real testing and bug reports to try to identify problems that can be hopefully resolved BEFORE it goes public. Leaked copies are not official public releases.

2) About half of the "bloated 2.5GB OS" is just drivers. Lots of them. Ever tried to evaluate an OS with no mass storage driver, network driver, video driver??? Not much fun. I APPLAUD them for including them, it's makes for a much better beta experience. Then I don't have to waste my time calling all the manufactures and asking for their beta drivers.

Your toolbars are likely being nuked as part of the anti-spyware efforts built in. How many crap toolbars have you had installed that you didn't want? 1 is too many. I'm sure they wouldn't permanently disable real toolbars, they'd be sued in a New York minute.
Fact: It's beta, stuff won't work. That's the whole point of a beta program... find & try to fix fast.

If you have ever beta tested anything from MS then you would know that every thing is ALWAYS larger after the beta is over. They have to include all of the extras and all of those drivers. And yes it will be larger than is needs to be, as always. And for those of you that will start crying that I said this I have said many times how to many versions of Linux are just to damn bloated (Red Hat with over a 3 gig install).

You're right, it will be bigger per version, but this beta includes both normal and server versions AND 32-bit and 64-bit versions for each.

The 2.5GB that has to be downloaded is an installation for 4 OS's. It will be smaller in the final release when it only has one version.

Official and "unoffical" beta testers beware: If you use(d) Trillian Multi-Messenger, IE7b1 breaks it, though no doubt Cerulean Studios (aka Trillian's authors) will fix this when IE7 goes public... unless it's just a beta bug in this release of IE7.

Yes it does break it with verizon 3.0 pro. However with 2.0 Pro there isn't an issue. So you can use Trillian 2.0 or IE7B1 your choice.

Just rename the msn.dll in the plugin's folder for the time being. (make sure Trillian is not started yet)

Just downloaded it and has a long way to go but has a smooth feel to it so far. The stop and refresh button are combined near the address bar

On the toolbar, where they belong is my guess... Perhaps the install moved your toolbars around by mistake. I am sure you can drag things around with the | bar on the left side of a menu... and/or right click and customize it.

TO the right of the URL box. THey are in the same spot. When your browser is loading a page, its a stop button. When done, its a refresh.

Agreed. The additional functionaliy is welcome but the gui needs some polish (as expected in a beta). I hope that they make the toolbars dockable though in the final release. Hate to be stuck with the current layout. :)

Well, I downloaded it. It looks pretty good, too. The RSS feed thing is pretty good. I've never done RSS feeds, but since it's built in, why not?! The Print Preview feature is pretty nice and it's nice to know that I won't have to worry about a 6 page article I just printed missing the last two words on every line. Doh! The tabbed browsing is nicely integrated, although nothing too special there. And the address bar being on top is kind of odd and will take a bit to get used to. Overall, I'd say the RSS thingie is the coolest new feature.

Since someone mentioned it, I just noticed that Antispyware now doesn't expire until 12/31, delayed from the July original expiration date. Looks to me like the final release might be delayed quite a bit, although that may be old news.

As I have seen here and on other boards (e.g. http://www.winbeta.org/f...ndex.php?showtopic=7608 ), IE7 Beta 1 has some problems with Windowsupdate. As results, "voluntary testers" will have difficulties in access to next fixes, which MS has to issue ASAP. I suppose that MS's decision about closed test was right: this beta is still very raw and public access to it could result a negative opinion of future potential users. I will wait at least until Beta 2 where some essential improvements are expected.

P.S. Compare with MS Antispyware: it was gone to public beta in relatively stable condition, much better than IE7 now.

Exactly, all this is going to do is give the firefox and opera trolls more bait to bash IE/MS with. I am sorry, but you cannot judge a final browser based on its first beta (which shouldnt be public anyways).

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 went on a limited beta release today and contains a nasty surprise for some users.

Users with search toolbars from Yahoo! and Google have discovered that these vanish. Other third-party toolbars designed to block pop-ups or aid with form filling appear to be working normally, according to reports from Reg readers.

IE7 integrates search into the browser, but the only option is Microsoft's own MSN Search. There are sound compatibility reasons for Microsoft disabling third-party toolbars in an early cut of the software. The beta is only available to Vista beta testers, and is available either as part of Vista itself or as a download for Windows XP Service 2, and affects only a few thousand people.

But it does raise ominous echoes of Microsoft previous tactics of foreclosing competition by hiding the alternatives available to users. For anti-competive reasons Microsoft is unlikely to risk such a move in the finished product. We'll have to see.

Blah, stop being a troll! The toolbars are probably disabled from loading because IE7 has code changes that might make those "awesome" toolbars of yours unstable and/or useless. Might have something to do with the code that handles how windows are displayed since the browser now supports tabs. Toolbars are a dime a dozen and I would not freak out if they did not work.

Oh please, in a day where 300GB hard drives are common 2.5GB is a HUGE "waist" of space. Get real, what did you think it was going to be the same size as Windows 95? By the way, the final product is not going to be that big genius. The beta contains lots of debugging stuff and other things that won't be in the final, and I think it is also both the 64 and 32 bit versions. Anyway, get over it.

No it won't be 2.5 gigs it will be larger as all MS products have been. Yeah 300 gigs with only 280 gig usable then you have a 2.5 gig or larger OS that has to use tons of Ram and most of your CPU cycles just to run and then everything you do will not run well unless you go out and buy the newest hardware. Get a grip and back the blank off.

I'm saving judgement til I've seen it in action. The beta's rough for sure, but it's not done yet. That's why it's a beta.

You truly must be an old woman living in a nursing home. The thought of an OS larger than 1GB scares you and makes you cry. My install of UT2004 is 5.83GB, over twice the size of the Vista beta. It is 2005, hard drives are huge, and yes software is bigger. Once again your original post was stupid and calling complete strangers kids doesn't change that. Now settle down granny and stop worrying; you can still run Windows 3.1 if you want.

My UT2004 is 6.82g, however I don't need my UT to be running all of the time while trying to run other apps. Why don't you load UT 2004 and run it in the backround with above normal priority and try to use your other apps that you would normally run. Maybe you will understand what is being said here.

Who in the world is going to have less than 512MB of RAM in 2006? I have 1GB right now with Windows XP. You remind me of those people who whined about having to have more than 8MB of RAM when Windows 95 came out. Memory is dirt cheap, and obviously every new generation of operating system is going to use more. Despite all of this, Vista is still a year from release. I think it's a bit premature to go stating system requirements for an OS that doesn't even exist yet in final retail form. This is just Beta 1, remember. Go back and look at beta 1 of Whistler and compare it to XP. Also remember that your 2.5GB figure is meaningless because as I said already the beta iso contains several different versions of the operating system among other things. The final is not going to be that large.

Damn you are slow. Yes most people will have more than 512mb, yet if the OS it's self takes that much it won't leave much for anything else and as will all programs the minimum is just to run that app without anything else, my bet is that it will take more like a gig of ram just for the OS to fun smoothly and then every app after that will need at least 128mb or more for them so you will be talking about 3 gigs after it is all said and done. Look at the big picture here and not your little world of fatty foods and loneliness.

Well. I had it but I am waiting on a new drive that the post office lost to install it on.

EDIT: I was going to install it on a new system just for testing and the HD was suppose to be here on the 25th, yet it's still not here (just a rant about the post office in may area(they aren't all this bad)).

I just noticed you said you have XP and Ubuntu. That's exactly what I have lol.

FYI- I have a dual-boot WinXP and Vista B1 on my 1.6GHz Pentium M laptop with 1GB RAM and a Radeon 9600 mobility graphics accelerator. Vista is very zippy with these specs and can even run the games installed on the XP partition, including UT2004 and World of Warcraft with performance on par with XP. Granted that the default video and sound drivers that work with Vista at the moment aren't the best, but they do the job.

Be wary, if you install IE7 (pirated or legit), there is no uninstall feature... You will probably end up needing to do a repair install to get it off.

To uninstall IE7 go to Add/Rem Programs, check Show Updates, & then look for it in the Windows XP - Software Updates section...

It also sets a system restore point as well.

i was considering trying out IE7 untill a friend told me he got it and can not use windows update now :( so im gonna stay away from it till its released to public as for Windows Vista Beta 1 youd almost be crazy to get it unless you have a test system im going to wait well into RC1

Let the "real" testing begin...

When the XP Betas were circulating some years ago I jumped on that ship instantly, since running on 9x was just a nightmare. But I'm pretty happy on XP so I will wait until Vista reaches RC status before I try it out. I will say that I'm excited about it, just not *as* excited.

I will keep an eye on the thread to see if there is anybody that has anything to say for real about it instead of just the normal bashing.
Is their anybody out there that has actually used Vista that can honestly report anything about it, ease of use, control panel differences, video and picture rendering, etc...?

I installed IE7 last night and did some basic testing with it. The first thing I noticed was the lack of icons for the familiar Home, etc. Not a big deal, it can be added in from the toolbars, but it did lock me out of my Exchange server until I reset the security. It's set to high automatically. The other thing new besides tabs is the phishing filter. Within 30 minutes I had crashed it, but that's expected from an early beta. I also use Firefox so no big deal there. Once I rebooted the computer it ran fine. The OS Vista and Longhorn are very large indeed. I left work still downloading them. 2.5 gig is large, but again it's a beta. I have read somewhere that it will only be available on DVD when it's released. Guess we'll wait and see. I don't want to speculate on anything else, the NDA is all over the web site and I've been testing MS software for about 7 years so I like to keep my toys.

The Home button is there, things are just moved around. The new combination refresh/stop button is interesting. The interface needs a lot of work yet but I don't think that's the priority at the moment. Beta 2 should be a lot better. :)
