Windows Vista Improves 'Fundementals'
By Ed Oswald | Published July 27, 2005, 2:53 PM
Microsoft officially released the first beta of Windows Vista on Wednesday as expected, ending what seemed like a never-ending series of delays and moving the Redmond company closer to the release of its long awaited next generation operating system.
Over 10,000 testers will get first dibs at the OS, with thousands more gaining access to the beta through the MSDN program and Microsoft TechNet.
Microsoft says that the next version of Windows improves the fundamentals of the operating system: "security, deployment, manageability and performance."
New security functions within Vista include anti-malware features similar to what the company currently provides through its Windows AntiSpyware product. When upgrading to Vista, the software will scan and clean the user's hard drive, allowing the OS to be installed in the cleanest environment available.
Internet Explorer 7, which will ship with Windows Vista, will also provide greater security by detecting malicious sites and malware, as well as protect against phishing-attacks.
Microsoft says that Windows Vista will install faster and easier thanks to new methods of compression that will speed up the installation process. Also, users will be able to ensure hardware and applications work before installing, thus catching potential issues before the operating system is upgraded.
Users will benefit from an improved task scheduler that will automate many tasks behind the scenes based not only on time, but on certain events. For example, disk cleanup could be activated when hard drive space falls below a certain level.
Finally, improvements to the performance of the operating system will be among the most noticeable changes. Vista will feature "quick startup," where the operating system will boot first and continue to load scripts and applications in the background while the user works.

Do us remember Longhorn? all the new technology promises and "stability, security, blah blah"? I guess this is the only reason Redmond has re-invented the name VISTA, so no one of our kids would relate it to Longhorn and ask "where the he11 is WinFS?".
In my opinion, this new super version is just xp with all the visual, indexing, anti-spy (add more please) stuff stolen from their original inventors and freelance visual style hackers, recoded, repackaged and re-priced.
The interesting part is: you can do all what vista can do NOW with all these freely available hacks (spells good coding and tweaks) and more.
The Operating System coding and ethics is no more... just make money off flatheads who have decided not allow anyone to mention the L word in a forum about MS. sigh!

|I have to agree that bloated apps are loathed.
Running this scale of OS before on older hardware was never going to work. But with recent years of Graphic power, if the OS is geared up to use DirectX and the oomph of modern cards, then this extra glitz might not be a bad idea, since the bulk of the processing power is allready offloaded. Hardware is cheap enough to handle it. I remember when systems were in the thousands for power users. Sure its big, but what an OS this beast could be.
I think Microsoft cant lose with this.

|I too hated the neon/crayon color look in XP and have always used classic view. I look forward to Vista with ONE criteria: will my 32-bit computer be faster? If not, then I'll wait to buy a 64-bit system before making the move [in '07?].

|As has been mentioned in most articles regarding Vista is that this beta does not have complete GUI elements. So it is wrong to completely criticize the GUI as it stands.
I actually think its an improvement from the "fischer price" look and adjusts other elements so they look and work better.

|Thanks for the link.... Indeed, I think it looks really nice, a much needed change from the Luna style-theme of XP (which I hate so bad that I always switch it to Classic view). Actually, it was just the fact that titlebars and the start menu appeared "HUGE" compared to everything else, and the color schemes.
The new theme and styles look fantastic though, can't wait to get my hands on this and play around.

New?
Score: 0
|Agreed - however I think they are trying to make the point that the focus is on actual events rather than "every Monday at 3:00pm", etc. like the current task scheduler works.

|It has nothing to do with task scheduler; disk cleanup already launches automatically when the disk space gets down to a certain level. I think even Windows 98 had that feature. LOL

|It does have to do with task scheduler, they are saying that you can create EVENTS for new tasks, like "When cpu is idle for X minutes, run this" or "When this app is run, run this process"

|Everything looked normal except that bit about "quick startup". What is that? How do you boot too a useable desktop and still have "scripts and startup applications" running in the background? So if you have network problems the user can get to their desktop and be notified after they start working that network drives could not be connected? Or that one script didn't run?
Or if Joe Blow is so infected with bloatware, spyware, etc. that his computer is slower than molasses in January he will be prompted with a quick desktop and as he works it gets slower and slower with every second?
Does not sound like a good idea to me right now.

there were only two things that I liked about windows XP: It took a bit longer to start, but when it was started everything was loaded into RAM memory and you could get to work. Now they are going to have the os loading while you work... give me a break I know how it will be. It will take ten minutes again to start your word because some useless script is loading in the background.
What a waste of valuable time
The second thing was the XP look, but I guess we're losing that too

|The loss of the XP "look" big honkin green and blue buttons and titlebars sounds like a blessing to me... lol.
I'll wait and see about the performance, I have never had a version of Windows get "slower" providing my hardware specs are up to snuff.
Score: 0
|I agree the change from the XP look is welcome. Of course I use a program like Windowblinds partly for that very reason.
I have felt that each version of Windows has greatly improved load time over its predecessor.
The problem is a lot of people only have the bare minimum requirements when an OS is released. Well at least I have. Even so it has been faster, and its not really all that slow for me as it is now. Of course I have to manage my startup all the time because programs like to put themselves there.
