Windows XP Build 2446 Released to Testers

By Aaron Dobbins | Published March 8, 2001, 3:15 PM

Several BetaNews readers wrote in to notify us that Microsoft has released Build 2446 of the upcoming Windows XP. Sent to testers earlier this week, one reader reports Microsoft has removed the registry key that disables product activation in an effort to fight piracy. The final release of Windows XP is expected in the fall, with Beta 2 coming up shortly. Keep checking back for further information as Microsoft continues to develop Windows XP.

maybe its stupidity but i cant for the life of me get windows XP to get past the first setup screen on bootup, just says Starting windows Whistler... but never moves from there.. and there aint muchn documentation out there for these beta releases. only thing i can think of is that it doesnt like my motherboard and/or ATA100 IDE controller. anyhow if anyone has an idea i'd be happy to hear it. The same CD installed fine on my friends PC only difference is his is slower and older... I dont like to think i am dumb, but i tried like 10 different ways of installing it. Upgrading from 2k, Me, fresh install, boot via CD and even the ol dos install.. wiped the old NTF partition made them fat32.. i ran out of ideas in the end... i do hope there is an answer because it does look quite good. its about time micrsoft changed the apearance of windows.. if only they made it completely customisable without the aid of 3rd party skinning software or shell replacements which just dont seem to be too perfect yet..

Who really knows, but after a lot of deliberation it installed. my guess it had to do with my Hard Disk. i just put it in another machine and got it past the first setup bit and then stuck it bback in mine and all was fine. Also i did remove my tuner card. I still dont know what was stopping it.. but after it installed once i installed it again no problems. Runs quite fast though some of the "effects" sometimes lag a little bit i guess you cant really whinge. I did turn everything on. The alpha blending most likely needs a little more work.

Score: 0

The alpha-blending needs absolutley no more work. MS cannot do anything at this point to improve stuff like that, it's card makers like nVidia who have been focusing on 3D performance, and putting out crappy 2D performance.

Get a Matrox G400, everything runs perfectly with that.

You guys... normally you won't get very far by sitting here saying "can u send it to me plz plz plz my address is nobrain@aol.com"

Listen very carefully. I shall say this only once.

Get mIRC. www.mirc.com. Learn how to use it, give yourself a half sensible nickname and then log onto DalNet (because I go to EfNet and you aint clogging up the queues MY server ;) )
Join the winxp or winbeta channel. Now, you are in a chat room. Every so often, you will see someone give out an FTP site with WinXP on it. There you go, that's where you get it.

Before you rush in, a couple of golden rules.
a) Don't bother asking where it is - just wait patiently... people don't appreciate "where can I get it" messages when the answer is automatically displayed every 10 mins.
b) Don't hammer the sites (that means don't retry every second... set it to 30 seconds). That's a good way to get yourself banned - wait your turn, or try the slower (modem) logins if you are paitient enough to leave the download trickling in for a few days. Those are often a lot less busy.
c) Don't get angry when you can't get into any sites... be patient remember! Don't act an a** in the channel, because the ops would love a reason to ban you and free up another slot in the queue.

Good luck.

I signed up for the so-called MS Windows XP Preview program which I figure is the same as the Win2K Corporate Preview. After signing up for their newsletter - nada. Does anyone have any information about this program - in particular how much I'll have to shell out for XP Beta 2 (and hopefully following betas). I paid out $19.95 for a chance to run Office XP for a few months - hope the OS preview is just as cheap. Anybody know anything about this program??

Marty

he Office XP is worth the $19.95 plus shipping. It was just announced that since it went gold on the 5th of march to manufactuers that it is close to being the final end version. Do not share it though or you could lose out, the program is verifyable every time you go online.

Thanks for the advice about the Office XP Preview. If I understand what you saying though it means that it must be tied to a specific machine? How else could MS detect that it was "loaned" to someone else. This preview dies August 31 so that's the reason for the low price - can't be reinstalled either. I'd assume that the retail price would be the usual $500+ - well beyond my means for sure. I'm just hoping to get a break on Wordperfect 2002 as a registered user.

XP or Whistler (i like that name better) tries to give "normal"
users win2k power with win9x compatibility. As of now, XP is a 90% win2k hybrid with a little bit more of compatibility (there is an emulation mode to try to run software as win9x)
I like the old start menu interface better, this new one sucks so much you cant add programs to the start menu that way (at least not directly)
New things i found in 2446: Shared network folders bug fixed, now
finally it remembers the network drives u connect to (2419 and previous were fine)
Registry hack was NOT removed, it was just modified, and you can bypass it easier than Napster's filter :-D
They removed the option to share a drive when u right click on it.
That's STUPID of you, Microsoft. Now users need to go to the control
panel and go into the administration console in order to add a new share.
For you gamers out there: Quake3 loses 5 frames per second in XP compared to win98se, but in direct3d games like flight simulator, i think it goes faster
Nvidia users, download the drivers from nvidia as the ones that come
with xp do not enable hardware acceleration
Still, for the average user, xp is better than 2k, i don't know what is it gonna be for server users
Microsoft, if you read this, the old boot logo from 2419 was a lot prettier

I know WinME is for home/personal and 2k is for Work related stuff. I found that XP had a childish look and didn't provide anything better than 2k.
