Windows XP SP1 Beta 1 Released to Testers
By Nate Mook | Published June 5, 2002, 10:31 PM
Microsoft on Wednesday made available to testers the first beta of Service Pack 1 for Windows XP Home and Professional editions. Company officials downplayed reports of a radical upgrade, calling SP1 "in most ways a traditional service pack" that is slated to include security fixes, compatibility updates and new drivers issued since XP's launch last October. Over 10,000 beta testers will be given access to download the SP1 beta starting today.
"Of note, included in the security updates will be fixes developed during the security push done by the entire Windows division as part of Microsoft's renewed emphasis on security for customers," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews. "In addition to these traditional elements, Microsoft is fulfilling its commitment to implement the changes required by the consent decree signed with the Department of Justice and nine settling states."
Like Windows 2000 SP3, Windows XP SP1 will included four options to override Microsoft's default applications as defined in the antitrust settlement. Customers will be able to remove, customize, or replace Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger and Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine with middleware of their choice.
Mira and Freestyle will each make their first appearance in SP1, however the additions will be transparent to most users. Mira enables support for detachable monitors, such as Tablet PCs, but only on Windows XP Professional. Unfortunately for consumers, Freestyle -- a new extra-large XP interface for accessing music, video and photos from across the room via remote control -- will only be accessible to OEMs installing the update on new computers.
The final release of Windows XP Service Pack 1 is set for late this summer, but the schedule could change depending on feedback from beta testers.
I decided to install the latest BETA SP from Microsoft Friday night. I installed in on my laptop first because it was at the time the most ependable. It installed without a hitch. I felt safe! So, I went to my main desktop and installed it on there too. Went a little faster than the laptop and screamed through everything (400Mhz vs. 1.6 GHz makes up that difference). I rebooted...it did everything the laptop did, the meter bar, then the WinXP Logo screen then it went to a black screen and stayed there for about as long as it did for the laptop.....and then it happened. I got a stop error where it then immediately rebooted the PC. Went the same motions again....same result. Booted into the safe mode and tried to restore it back to a restore point but my mouse and keyboard were disabled. Could not do anything. Had to reinstall all over again. My desktop PC was home built..my laptop was an IBM...not sure if that had anything to do with it or not...just thought I would share something with you.

|Hmm, did you perhaps have a customized boot screen?

|If you are running something like StyleXP with a custom logon screen, CHANGE IT BACK TO ORIGINAL FIRST! LOL!! I didn't, and had to reinstall everything, because I couldn't log in (safe, normal, last good config, nothin!)

|Did you have the problem with msgina.dll screwing up, or something like that? I've seen a few of those on the newsgroups.

|I should have wrote it down, but yeah, I believe it was. No login screen would come up, no login page, nothing. NOT easy to do much after that.
But, with having redone things, then put SP1 on, it is lots faster.

|The integrated version comes with newer nVidia drivers than can be found on the net, 29.42

|Yes, but are those full feature drivers? The last set of MS certified drivers I installed cost me OpenGL support lol.

|Nope, not fully featured.

|It has ran fine for me without a hitch. A few of the annoying bugs that I hated (mostly visual) have been fixed. And I have the option of rolling back which is a good thing for a beta.

|Hi, Need a Key to install Win Xp service pack 1, because my FCK is not working with it.... Will be much obliged if I get one from anyone...
Thanks a ton:)

|I can't see too many people replying back with valid keys. Why don't you try getting a key yourself? The Blue List released a key generator that might be able to help you out.

|From what i have heard it will deactivate copies which were installed using on of the well known serials on the net, mainly the Devils0wn version serial. Microsoft has apparently contacted all the companies who had the serials originally for their legit licenses and given them new serials. When i say deactivated from what i have read on other sites and been told when the OS is deactivated it will give users 30 days to use a valid key to reactivate the system. This seems a little odd to be honest i thought it would have been like with Office 2000 were the applications cannot run at all, eg the system cannot boot up. However i guess this will cause alot of problems with peoples personal data. I suppose the only thing Microsoft can do is to let windows continue to run for a certain amount of time warning the user it is an illegal copy which will not boot after X amount of time so they should backup all there personal data etc. Who knows, i guess only time will tell, i am just passing on what i have heard.

|Use this only if you installed one of the leaked corp keys by mistake and now have a NEW key to use.
Yes it works
Change Product Key without Reinstall:
1. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents, on the right double click on "oobetimer" and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows.
2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen and go to the second option which is activate by phone.
3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key (Corporate one only).
4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 2 for the second time to verify your activation , you should see "windows is already activated

|If they did that, Windows Update would only ever get one hit! (joking haha)
