Windows XP Service Pack 1 Available
By Nate Mook | Published September 6, 2002, 10:24 PM
Three days before it will make an official debut, Service Pack 1 for Windows XP is now available for download. The 133MB update corrects a myriad of security issues and bugs that have cropped up since Microsoft released Windows XP in October of last year.
"Windows XP SP1 is a well-tested collection of updates that improve upon the operating system's security, reliability and compatibility, including fixes developed as part of the Trustworthy Computing Initiative," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews.
"In addition to the traditional service pack updates, SP1 also implements changes required by the consent decree signed with the DOJ and nine settling states. And it includes additional enhancements, such as support for USB 2.0 and the .NET Framework," he said.
Microsoft announced the impending public release of SP1 to Windows XP beta testers Friday, giving them early access to the service pack as a token of appreciation for their hard work.
"Much of the success of this great product is based firmly on the work and feedback given by corporate testers and individuals like you," Microsoft wrote in an e-mail. "We want to thank you for your involvement with this program."
Windows XP Service Pack 1 may be downloaded via FileForum. A smaller Express Installation is expected to be available starting Monday via Windows Update.
When I tried to install it via Windows Update Express install, the install program would open then cancel by itself! I cannot install it from Windows Update- i dont want to update it from the full download; too long... arrgh what should i do?

MS limits the download speed! but I finally found the link and downloaded the whole 130 mbs file in 15 min. using DAP. take this, MS! what am I, some freaking sheep moving slowly and inevitably towards the concentration camp gas chamber? Just imagine all those idiots sitting before their computers waiting for the slow download to finish! not with me, buddies! although I did lose 1 hour searching for the MS direct download link to the german version, did I mention this already? ok.
now for the contents: this stupid pack destroys all custom settings:
-all multimedia files back to media player 8
-all image files to that freaking fax viewer some kiddies have written while on speed and sold to MS
-old registry values I have long ago deleted, like that freaking fax and image viewer context menu entries back
-autostart cdrom/dvd whatever settings back to default
that freaking registry destruction bug is still there. just half an hour after the install of SP1 pc crashed and wouldn't start any longer - security from system32\config folder destroyed. at least it wasn't one of the important files, like the software file, which holds all reg info on software. I could restore the file from the repair folder, because my system restore was off. and why? because that freaking SP1 wanted to unpack the files to my e:\ partition, which has no space left at all! why not to c:\ partition, MS suckers? ok, so I switched off restore to get some space back, boom! pc crashed and I had to use an old security file because of MS stupidity. result: IIS wouldn't work any longer and I had to search their stupid pages to find a solution. at least I did find one, even if it took some time.
so what I am talking about is not so much about the SP1, but about the overall stupidity of MS. like, you know, you can never save the folder location, and it never opens full size, has been so since win95 and never fixed. or that you can never save the way images are shown, I say thumbnails and next day they are shown as symbols again. instead in other folders normal files, not images, are always shown as thumbnails. MS is either crazy or stupid. as if there were a difference between the two terms.
to get back to SP1: don't worry, it won't destroy anything. don't make backup (to uninstall SP1), it costs much space. it's just - this pack is annoying, but then again, everything sucks with Microsoft.
