Windows XP Unveiled in New York

By Nate Mook | Published October 25, 2001, 6:54 PM

With over 50 partners in tow, Microsoft on Thursday kicked off Windows XP in New York's Times Square. Alongside Regis Philbin, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and top industry CEOs, Bill Gates ushered in the biggest change to Windows in over six years. In his keynote address, the Microsoft Chairman highlighted improvements over XP's predecessors and said goodbye to DOS forever. "This is a version of Windows that will take the PC industry to new heights," Gates told the more than 1500 attendees.

Steve Ballmer commanded a similar event in London.

Windows XP combines the reliability of Windows 2000 with the usability of Windows Me -- minus the crashes. "Windows XP is the most powerful, fastest, most reliable operating system we have ever done. We've poured literally billions of dollars of development into this new product. That was based on the feedback we had from our users, based on a vision of new activities that the PC could enable," stated Gates.

Focusing on entertainment, communication and productivty, Gates invited Windows group head Jim Allchin to showcase customers using the new operating system. Allchin extended his gratitude for the feedback supplied by beta testers. "You helped develop this product and I really, really appreciate it," he said. Thank you."

Allchin also mused while reminiscing about his coming to Redmond. "I didn't think that this was the place for me. I thought maybe the right thing to do was to go to a company that believed in really reliable systems...So it's been an exciting journey for me and the team, and today we’re unleashing that real system, a system that’s more reliable, more secure and easier to use."

Windows XP upgrades run $99 and $199 USD for Home and Professional editions, respectively. The full version of Home Edition retails at $199 USD, with Professional demanding a heftier $299 USD. Professional adds improved networking capabilities and multi-processing support.

To get the word out, Microsoft has embarked on a $1 billion joint marketing campaign to promote Windows XP. From street vendors to giant billboards, Times Square was plastered with XP propaganda. Retailers began stocking store shelves in preparation for the festivities. Free RAM and antivirus software were offered to sweeten the deal for early adopters.

To end the day's events, Sting -- complete with a Windows XP backdrop -- performed to a packed crowd at Bryant Park. Thousands of New Yorkers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the concert.

'Our tests of the multitasking capabilities of Windows XP and Windows 2000 demonstrated that under the same heavy load on identical hardware, Windows 2000 significantly outperformed Windows XP. In the most extreme scenario, our Windows XP system took nearly twice as long to complete a workload as did the Windows 2000 client.'

Let me start off by saying that I'm not anti-MS. Win2k was an outstanding accomplishment. The stability in that OS was unprecedented and may never be realized again. From my experience, Win XP is about as reliable as the lowly Windows Millenium. Ignore the glamorous Madonna commercials...this OS is an absolute farce. I've tried RC1 through the final version and every build has given me problems. Actually, earlier Neptune and Whistler builds were more reliable than Windows XP. I run a very common hardware config (Realtek NICs, Nvidia TNT2 vid card, SB live, etc) with 512 MB RAM on an Athlon 700 but this OS crashes more than it should. I've had windows media player, outlook, IE6 and even word crash on me. There's also a lovely bug that happens about once a day that turns 90% of the desktop gray so you can't see your icons. I will hold my breath for the first service pack.

I'm quite surprised to hear that. I've had the Whistler build and one of the RCs, and now XP Pro. All have been stable on multiple machines. I've been running XP Pro now (P4 1.5ghz, nVidia card) since the 15th and the only thing that has crashed is Visual Studio.NET. It crashes a little more often than the install on my Win2k box.

I think your machine is just cursed =)

Wow you're pretty quick to blame XP. I've been running win2k since it was released up until now. Now I'm using XP, and alot of my friends are using XP. NOBODY I've talked to that is using XP is complaining about stability at all, everybody is actually saying how stable, smooth and fast it is, even compared to win2k. I was actually surprised at how fast and stable XP is running on all the pc's in my house (Athlon xp 1800, Athlon tbird 800, and a pentium 2 500), all the pc's are running that much better since I've switched from 2k to XP. Maybe you should check your setup...and if you did an upgrade from another OS that might cause instability...I've heard reports of unstable upgrades (although I know 2 people that did an upgrade and are running completely fine).

I haven't had to reboot my PC in like 2 weeks...it's amazing ;)

A few days ago, we had a possible hijacking scare in a passing private jet. The plane landed, was surrounded by police, and was held on the tarmac for two hours while authorities contacted the pilots via radio. Eventually, one by one, the people on the plane exited with their hands raised high.
The device used to signal the air traffic controllers malfunctioned, and released a single 'squawk', and the AIT's asked the pilots if anything was wrong. They replied no, but not mentioned by either sides was the possibility of a hijacking. THe authorities took no chances, and treated it like a potential hijacking.
Naturally it turns out that the hardware malfunction caused the unneccesary precaution. The passengers were delayed from their destination for a few hours, and nothing more.
The passengers were five top executives from AOL-Time-Warner, one including Bill Raduchel, vice-president.

Windows XP is quite possibly Microsoft's best product (although I'm quite fond of the .NET platform). Very stable, very easy to use, fast, and finally a new UI. I love the built in firewall. Today I upgraded my home edition to professional. It took 55 minutes and I only had to respond to one or two dialogues. Not one hitch.

Come on folks, what OS is this easy to use, this nice looking, this compatible..? WinXP has built in support for over 12,000 (!) devices. What OS supports that many devices? What OS will automatically ask you to send a report in when a program crashes?

Yes yes, Linux is secure. KDE is nice looking. But come on, half the time you get the pleasure of editing a damn text file to make a device work, or to enable a feature. This is absurd and mundane. Mac OS? Joke. BeOS? Not bad, but meant for internet appliances.

Windows and MS critics who are going to flame this post, give XP a chance. I agree Win98 wasn't that great, ME was just horrible. Windows 2000 is awesome, and XP just extends that.

XP is what an OS *should* be.

Score: 0

Personally, I wouldn't complain so much if Win Whatever LET me edit a text file to make a device work, or to enable a feature. My biggest rant is that Windows "protects you from yourself" to the extent that it prevents you from modifying / fixing / editing the computer when you KNOW what you are doing. If I don't want a pop-up menu, and extra link to click through, to warn me away from my /Program Files/ and /Windows/ and /Windows/System/ folders, then I should be able to tell it once and for all "Shut UP and let me do what I need to do! I want to hexedit the code for my freakin' assembly language simulator, and I don't need to be warned away from my program files for the 15th time today!!!" Linux / Unix may indeed be a trick to learn, and very non-user-friendly... but at least it is customisable in the way that I fear Windows will never be. It doesn't scold you like an opressive mother, protecting you from any possible way that you might possibly have a possibility of hurting yourself; rather, it warns you once, and shuts up. When I log into /root, Linux warns me that I could mess things up... and then it lets me. The role of the OS is NOT to second-guess every move we make, changing and "fixing" things in the background without telling us, when oft as not it is "fixing" a tweak we enabled to customise / stabilise the OS or a program. So my rant is not with Windows, per se... it is rather with the mentality that enforces computer illiteracy; catering to it (not necessarily bad) AND stifling resultant learning (quintessentially evil) as it regresses to Fisher Price levels of safety and intelligence.

Why I'd rather use Windows 2000 instead of Windows XP:
- greater stability
- less disk space requirements
- less memory requirements
- greater performance (not in bootup time, of course, but once it's up and running)
- lack of annoying visual fluff (e.g. the more cumbersome Search dialog)
- lack of 'Activation'

When i first got win XP Pro i loved it, and its a great operating system, but the fact that the new interface looses its flare very soon and that 4, yes 4 of the same network processes have to run taking about 35mb ram is a joke, on fast machines with 256mb+ ram this might not be an issue at all and if your a home user who cant play games on 2k, this OS is for you! For anyone else i urge you to stay with 2k...

- less disk space requirements = I need a bigger hard drive (Very CHEAP)
- less memory requirements = I need more RAM (Very CHEAP)
- greater performance (not in bootup time, of course, but once it's up and running) = I need a better computer
- lack of annoying visual fluff (e.g. the more cumbersome Search dialog) = But its OK for MAC and Linux to include more fluff
- lack of 'Activation' = Makes it hard for me to warez it

They aren't going to make you buy Windows again, no matter what you do to your computer. What you DO need to do, if you radically change your configuration multiple times is activate again. But so what? That just means connecting to the internet or making a phone call.

I got all this information from ExtremeTech (http://www.extremetech.c...3D1%2526ap%253D2,00.asp), which as far as I know is unaffiliated with Microsoft in any way.

Ok, then tell me where I can get a PC bundled with hardware options exactly like a presario at the presario's pricepoint, WITHOUT Windows. What's that you say, I can't? Well then I guess one will have to buy that presario and in the process purchase, and be stuck with Windows XP even if it is never used. That my friend is what your wonderful uncle bill has done for *ME* (joe consumer) today.

Funny, the only drivers I have had to install were my WinModem driver, and my Lexmark driver. I didn't even have to install drivers for my Clik drive, either of my Digital cameras (One is USB mind you) my video card, or my soundcard. Why do people say that Linux is hard to configure? My Winmodem driver was as easy as make;make install (yeah, it tells you how in the readme) my Lexmark driver was as easy as clicking a shell script.. Go figure someone actually puts effort into something. Windows is the lazy man's O/S. That was what it was designed to be. Why else would it be chock full of checkboxes and wizards? LOL!

Those are strong words! LOL It's stable, fast (it's slower than other desktops though) and is fluid. You must be thinking kde 2.0 ;-) 2.2.1 is nothing like it. I haven't seen it crash yet, and I have it running on multiple machines.

I've been a Slackware user since '95, so yeah, I have booted it, as well as Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, BeOS, QNX, and a plethora of minor OS's. And I can honestly say that each of the programs you listed are indeed piles of s***e...as well as the OS they typically run on, except when said OS is in a server enviroment, which is its only true calling. I just wish stubborn fools like you would give up and accept the cold hard fact of what linux is good for.

Most people that would purchase a bundled system would more than likely *want* windows on their system. But your right, just to be fair, companies should cater to the whims of a few zealots. Guess that's why VA Linux went over so mind-blowingly well, right?

You complain that Windows is the lazy man's OS, yet that's what Linux is striving to be. Make up your freaking mind. "oh, wait, we can't make this too easy, it'd be too much like Windows". Of course, the more I read your comments, the more I start to think that you're probably a RedHat user, using a standard out-of-the-box default kernel. Try walking your Mom through a custom kernel config process, then come back and tell me how much fun it was.
