X-Box Logistics Revealed

By Aaron Dobbins | Published December 26, 2000, 1:20 PM

Microsoft has revealed its plans behind the much anticipated X-Box rollout coming to North America and Japan in the fall of next year, and to Europe in early 2002. To meet the expected enormous demand, the Redmond Giant says it will be working with Flextronics International Ltd. to establish facilities for manufacturing the gaming console in several regions throughout the world. Initial plants will open in Mexico and Hungary, with a plant in Asia to follow shortly after to meet demand in that region. For more information visit Microsoft.

On and on and on it all goes. It's taken many years before consoles are finally able to meet the graphic demands that we already expect from our own laptops and desktops. Truth is it's no big deal who is better for which damned console or computer.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and as far as I'm concerned they all will have their moment in the spotlight. Sega kicked butt 6 months ago (and as far as I can see they still are as Sony is yet to deliver a lot of misplaced promises). Nintendo will come out and then they'll have their moment when the big boys will have a showdown. Then finally Microsoft will rise from the ashes and nuke 'em all.

But by the end of it all (2 years down the track) the "new" technologies will be fading away and newer and better systems will be peaking round the corner once again. It's a never ending cycle and I for one will never tire of the ol' desktop. From Atari's and Megadrives, Super Nintendo's to Dreamcasts and X-Boxes. The PC has survived them all while those consoles of years past do nothing but gather dust in my cupboard, my computer gets more powerful with each passing era. Long live the PC!!

I wonder if there will be something like Bleem! for the X-Box. (just like Bleem! for the Dreamcast, Playstation 1 games even look better on the Dreamcast then on the PSX!)

And with the hardware and speed of the X-Box I think that we will also be able to play Dreamcast games (I read somewhere that the DVD-protection format used for the Dreamcast was broken, now you'll be able to copy DC cd's??), i already saw a DC-emulator somewhere, but it's only able to play some sort of demo.

And maybe even Game Cube cd's (aren't they using somesort of cartridge around the cd?, not sure about that!)

So if some developer can develop emulators for the X-Box we will be able to play all kinds of games from different platforms.

I am not sure about the DC and the GC, but I think that the guys there at Bleem! will develop something for the X-Box as they did for the DC.

OK Greetz!

After reading the posts, I've checked out indrema, ps2, and the Xbox. All of them look great. However, hardware specs aren't everything. Sony already has tons of loyal PS consumers and it is in the lead. By that I mean they're already selling their product. It will heavily depend on marketing and the amount of games available in the long run. Personally I wouldn't care for a product with all in one capability. What I look for in games is GRAPHICS and overall game play. The mp3 playing, hard drives, internet browser, etc are nice features but they belong in a computer. I'd rather have the console maker spend that money towards video and chip technology.

I don't think X-Box will be hard to buy...
because PS2 just came out and after all
those hard to the core "gamers" spent
250+ for that..I don't see allot on X-Box
sales.

I didn't buy PS2. So I'll be looking for my X-Box!
:-) I WANT MY X-BOX!

I think the Indrema console is a joke. How can you expect to have a kickass gaming system, if the processor is also dedicated to doing web browsing, music playing, and TV functions? With gaming systems the hardware is designed specifically for one purpose, and that's playing games. The X-box's system has been specifically designed to do this allowing minimal additions to be made to the hardware. This lets game developers grasp the technology and work with it, without having to keep redoing code or learning new procedures to make a game. As you see with every system out there, the first year of games is usually the worst presented because the developers are in the process of learning to optimize the code and hardware to get the games to do what they want to do. If you have a system that can be upgraded all the time, how do developers have time to make the best games?

In other thoughts, I think Microsoft isn't going to have a hard time selling their system. What other company spends as much money as Microsoft on advertising and promoting? It will be very soon, when we will be brainwashed by the overflooding of commercials and advertisements for this new system.

actually, strangly enough, the only commercials I ever see from MS is MSN Internet Access, which I haven't seen in months (but those are hilarious), they used to have the occasional "Microsoft, where do you want to go today?" commercials, but haven't seen one of those in many years.

The new Indrema console will definatly beat X-box.
It is cheaper, more hardware, upgradeable, internet ready plus it runs on LINUX & open source. It is to be avaliable end of spring 2001.
www.indrema.com for more information.

If it doesn't beat PS-2, it will beat x-box.

In your dreams. The graphics system in teh X-Box will blow the Indrema console away, let alone the faster processor and memory bandwidth. The only real benefit the indrema has is harddrive space but THIS IS A FRIGGING CONSOLE, not a desktop computer. 8GB is more then enough to store saved games, downloaded music and the OS needed to run this machine.

its matching what x-box is giving + more.
you didn't even go to the link I gave.
It runs on DV-Linux. The games are open source. It has an 8 gig hard drive because it can download, store and playback mp3s. It can also record shows (TiVO). It has many more options which you haven't bothered to read on. The X-Box is going to provide almost the same console as the Indrema, only they will provide it in fall. By that time most people will already own an Indrema or a PS-2.
Mark my words...

since the console is opensource, you will see plenty more games & hacks. To make a game for a console like X-box, you will probably need to dish out 10 grand for the developers console. With indrema, you just download the SDK to your pc and code away.
Plus the Indrema will be above 600mhz (probably 800-1ghz). This was announced in a chat with the CEO. You can deny the fact that this is a great console and it will create some good competition... but it IS the truth.

Not only that but Linux sucks big time for gaming, it's nowhere near as good as Windows is because of DirectX.
Also, an upgradeable console would suck, because then the hardware changes and the developers can't write for a specific hardware configuration, which means that it can't take full advantage of your hardware.

Besides the fact that Microsoft has a LOT more money and more resources.

And here's a newsflash for ya Jif, X-Box is a much more superior platform than the PS2, it IS internet ready, and it supports HDTV.

Score: 0

uhh... no, you just get an XDK (that is what the X-box dev kit is called). Because it's open source is another reason that it will NOT make it.
And if you read my other post, you will see other reasons tht Indrema won't make it.

Score: 0

First of all, I did read the site at the link you gave, that's how I knew the X-Box surpassed the Indrema in everything except HD space. BTW, you're wrong, the INdrema has a 40GB drive but first of all, who cares in a game console and second of all I bet a hack will be found that will let you upgrade the HD or you will be able to add an external HD.

Now about open source. Who cares? I want others to write games for me and given the state of application development on Linux compared to Windows (or even Mac for that matter), especially in gaming, Windows has Linux beat hands down. MS has ALWAYS provided game developers with extensive SDKs (XDKs for the X-Box) and other material needed to create the bets games possible on Windows. Linux has very little and what they do have from the mainstream game market is not open source.

Upgradable consoles would suck big time. They wouldn't be anywhere near as reliable as a console with set specs and game companies will start requiring you to go out and buy some upgrade everytime they release a game because they don't want to work within the specs of the console.

You are forgetting the biggest point. Microsoft already has a TON of developers signed up and working on games already. What does this other console have?

I think it would be a big success, due to all those games company signing up with microsoft new x-box...such as capcom. There is going be great games with this game console!!! also we don't have to question the quality of the x-box since it's spec's are much advance and better then the other ones out right now.

i think that they should both be boycotted. **** sony for not being able to manufacture enough PS2 units so it would be more hyped and people would forget about the fact that they are charging $300 dollars for a stupid game console. but i guess $300 is a bargain compared to what some morons are paying on ebay.

yeah, the morons on eBay tend to sometimes pay 3x the actual cost of the product that they are buying.
