Xbox 360 Launch Set for Midnight

Electronics retailers across the country are preparing for the expected onslaught of excited gamers as the Xbox 360 officially launches on Tuesday. At least one major retailer will open its doors early, and over 4,500 others nationwide will open at midnight to begin selling the console.
To celebrate the impending launch, Microsoft held a special event called "Xbox 360: Zero Hour" in California's Mojave Desert that began Sunday night. Attendees will have the chance Monday night to buy the console, games and accessories before leaving the invite-only party.
Microsoft says Zero Hour was the first time the company had held an event of this size for gamers. The company hosted a party in 2001 for the launch of the original Xbox console, but those who had attended both said that this event was much grander in scale.
"The debut of Xbox 360 marks one of the biggest consumer launches in Microsoft's history," Microsoft's chief Xbox officer Robbie Bach said.
Along with midnight Xbox 360 sales, Best Buy said that it would open its stores an hour earlier Tuesday at 9 a.m. local time. The store urged customers to arrive early, as tickets would be issued for those waiting to buy the console.
Each store would carry a minimum of ten units. However, no pre-orders would be accepted, nor would rain checks be made available, Best Buy said.
Tuesday's Xbox 360 launch will mark the first part of a three-phase global rollout. The console will launch December 2 in Europe, and then December 10 in Japan.
I got one for free at 360forfree.com. I had to sign up for an offer, but it was a free trial. I just canceled before being charged. Hopefully it will ship today. Can't wait. I got a PSP the same way.

|If they have been selling them, they could be in trouble with Microsoft.
Likely it was just a demo model like I've seen at a local store here. It's been here for people to come and play for a month, but no one could buy it. Heck, I couldn't even play it because every time I tried, there was some 5 or 6 other people already waiting in line to give it a try.

|Hmmm... and to think:
There are people all over the Eastern time zone that just got their hands on their own XBOX 360's.

|I'll get one eventually, but there's no compelling reason to buy one tonight. When the Xbox came out, I had nintendo 64, playstation and dreamcast. Xbox was a major step up. From the few games I've seen (PGR3, Amped 3 and King Kong) it's not leaps and bounds beyond Xbox.
I'll get one eventually, because I'll want it for the new games, but I'm certainly in no rush.

|I'm so tempted to buy this, but will Playstation 3 be better? I had a ps2 and then an xbox and xbox is way better (IMO). Also with Blu-Ray technology do I even want it? Also from what I've been reading it looks like the xbox will have way more power (3 processors - do we even need that?)). Oh what do do?
In the end I'll probably get an xbox...I love metal gear but there's just no contest when it comes to Halo (i gotta have it).

|have you done your homework?!
"it looks like the xbox will have way more power"
the PS3 will be the one with more power, running a Cell CPU with 8 cores, which by far overpowers the 360s 3 core cpu.
"Also with Blu-Ray technology do I even want it?"
blueray will be nice, as for the dmr, its not gonna take long to develop chips and cracks.
"Also from what I've been reading it looks like"
it dont look like youve been reading, may-b you should try harder:)

|People still can't agree on exactly what will have more power. It looks like the PS3 will be more powerful (IMO), but you can't just say "this one has 8 cores, and this one has 3." It's not that simple.
My single-CPU PC out-performs an 8-way server at my office (8 Pentium III's). The two consoles have such different hardware it's very difficult to compare them.
And remember, the numbers mean nothing if the software can't use the hardware properly. It's all about optimization of hardware/software working together.

|You won't see anything soon to push either the Xbox360 or the PS3 to their limits. It's just too hard and time consuming for developers to make games that really test the limits of these technologies. Of course PS3 is going to be more powerful, but at what cost? It's going to more expensive, that's for sure; PS3 probably won't have as good of an online experience as XBox 360, nor will it be as successful. Xbox360 is coming out during the Holiday season and is relatively affordable. PS3 is coming out in May and is going to be more expensive.

You sound like a damn noob. If this was the case, we would be playing games at FILM quality. It's just not possible to get that kind of quality in realtime yet. And wont for a LOOONG time. I have a $3,500 video card in my box at work, and there is NO way you are going to tell me that a $300 dollar crap box from MS is going to out perform my machine. And the real point I'm trying to make is that even my video card is decades (minimum) from even being remotely close to film quality in realtime.
You know what IS hard and time consuming? LOWERING the resolution so the games can play at a decent frame rate on these crappy machines.
I'm an artist working in the film industry and I've worked at game studios before so dont think for a second I dont know what I'm talking about.
whootsshhhh... DOWN BOY!

|I'm not buying one. Waiting for PS3, unless some of my favorite developers jump ship from Sony over to MS (namely Square-Enix, which so far have only announced a port of FF XI to Xbox360, nothing beyond that). However I've entered several contests that are giving away free XBox360s so, if I win one I'll use it and buy some games, yeah.

EDIT: I didn't say that I would get it for $100. I said,"so that the price drops about $100." So that means that it will go down from $400 to $300. That is what I was saying.

|I am looking forward to the X360 Launch! Finally a console that can keep up with the power that PC Gaming has. I am also lookin forward to the PS3 as well with it's launch is coming Metal Gear 4, Final Fantasy VII Remake(I WILL get my hands on this :P ), and Gran Tourismo 5!
Score: 0
|Unless you've seen news I haven't, I think you're mistaken about FFVII. They remade the opening video of the game as a demo of the PS3's hardware capabilities. Everywhere I've read, and continue to read, say that the developers have no intention of remaking the entire game. If they did, I too would be in line to pick it up.
Anyway, as far as the XBOX 360 goes, I'm like others who have said they'll wait. I'm curious to see if the price doesn't drop after the first of the year once the holiday season is over and the PS3 launch date approaches. I think it would truly be good marketing strategy by Microsoft, as they'll already have a good share of the market due to being the only console to make a release this year. Why not drop the price in time for PS3's launch to pick up stragglers that were waiting for such an event?
I'm sure I'll have them both eventually, when money allows and game developers have shown they're going to make good use of the hardware.

|For a couple months, then the PC will be ahead again. From what I've seen, the current generation of video cards, X1000 and Nvidia 7800 are pretty much on par with the GPUs in the new consoles.

|Yeah, but I am just praying that they are going to make it, I heard that it is a possiblilty, Square hasn't desided (I think they're waiting to see how well Advent Children does in the US, and how that tech demo stirrs up all the FF fans)I too am Going to wait on the X360, I am not all that excited about the game titles. But as far as the PS3 goes, If the tittles they are planning on releasing with it are release, I will jump on it the day of release. The Primary reason I want the PS3 is Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray is going to make the DVD Obsolete, just like the VHS, and the PS3 will support Blu-Ray, as their games will be Blu-Ray and it will play Blu-Ray movies as well when they are released!
