Xbox 360 Premium Gets HDMI Port

By the Betanews Staff | Published August 9, 2007, 9:33 AM

Microsoft has quietly updated its mid-range Xbox 360 Premium model with an HDMI output, making the game console compatible with high-definition televisions and receivers. The HDMI port had been a major selling point of the high-end Xbox 360 Elite, which costs $100 more and features a larger hard drive.

Customers began noticing the HDMI port on the latest shipments of Xbox 360 units to retail stores, and Microsoft has confirmed it is phasing in the updated model. The Redmond company has not said whether the new Xbox 360 Premium features the rumored 65-nanometer chips that run cooler or quieter DVD drive, but it is likely. Xbox 360 Premium buyers can look for an HDMI logo on the box to ensure they receive the updated version.

This will anger a lot of people who bought Elite simply for the HDMI port.

Let the negative comments begin.

I forgot where I read it, but my understanding is that they are going to include HDMI on the core system too.

I was going to take my Premium to EB Games for a replacement (extended warranty) due to an abundance of lockups, but I think I'll hold off for a bit and let these new units get stocked up first.

Anything to get a quieter system, and HDMI is definately a bonus. Now I just need an HDMI switch. I'm maxxed out.

Anyone know if the Xbox HDMI is v1.3? I'm getting a 10-bit per channel "deep color" panel and would like to know of the Xbox will support this. (pre-1.3 HDMI is capped at 8-bit per channel)

HDMI 1.2 (same as Elite).

Funny how HDMI was not required for gaming, according to Microsoft, and now, it seems all of a sudden, it is..

Ever get the feeling you been had?

Where did they say it was required for gaming? Oh, that's right they didn't.

Todd Holmdahl: Xbox 360 will support HD component video output, which is compatible with nearly every HD-ready TV on the market today. We’re poised to hit the sweet spot of the HD market at launch and as the market matures, and we will provide an HDMI for our customers when it makes sense. The reality is, you don’t need HDMI for HD gaming.

http://interviews.teamxb...erview-Todd-Holmdahl/p1/

In short, they lied to you, told you you did not need HDMI, you believed them, rushed out an bought a 360, now they tell you you do need one, and have to buy the new 360..

Suddenly, with all the extras you need to buy, and the updated consoles to get basic features, you are upto $1000 so far with Xbox.

That is of course your negative interpretation.

Here's the reality.

They didn't say it is necesary with the Elite. They simply saw that customers wanted it so as they said they would, they provided it when it made sense to do so. Customer's who wanted it or needed it now could get it.

The only reason its being added to the other 2 models is because its easier to just make 1 motherboard for all 3 skus.

Guess what though - its still NOT needed. I don't have it and it hasn't limited my gaming at all.

Yeah the other thing I'm supposed to get upset about (according to the Sony fanclub) is that it's 'only' HDMI 1.2a (I'm presuming they're using the same hardware for this as the Elite).

HDMI 1.2a is up to DVD-Audio/SACD 5.1 multi channel sound standards.

That's not exactly 'cr@p' in my book.

"Funny how HDMI was not required for gaming, according to Microsoft, and now, it seems all of a sudden, it is.."

Here we go again. The usual Sony zealots spewing anti-MS BS. HDMI was never required for gaming. HDMI is not require for gaming now. HDMI will not be required for gaming in the future. It is an extra feature that people can choose to use, or not use. It is not a "requirement" in any sense of the word.

So you are saying DRM is going to be in games since that is what HDMI is all about anyway. I think not. Keep trolling your lack of knowledge is humorous.

Yes, I do get that feeling. Thanks for making me feel worse than I did two seconds ago.

Please point to me where in that paragraph they say HDMI is required for gaming?

"Suddenly, with all the extras you need to buy, and the updated consoles to get basic features, you are upto $1000 so far with Xbox."

We've already explained to you that you don't need HD-DVD and Wifi to play games on the 360. $349.99 will get you the 'basic features' to start playing games (which also includes a hard drive).

Also, there is no content out there that supports Deep Color yet. My understanding of the deep color is the content has to be filmed in deep color, and the TV and player have to support it. Currently there is no content filmed in deep color.

something tells me the 360 hdmi 1.3 will be out next year to support the HD DVD audio codecs.

but it a demand for it

That is my understanding as well, though I am no expert. However I don't intend on buying a new panel and a new 360 when such content does become available. The panel I'm buying I intend to last me at least a decade and if/when I buy a 360 I'm not buying another xbox until the 720 or whatever the next version is called comes out.

Thank you for the answer.

I personally haven't been had because I don't own a 360 yet. I was planning on waiting till the 65nm systems came out but would have considered jumping in now if HDMI was 1.3. I'm in no great rush though so I'll hold off for a bit longer. With the cooler cores, quieter drives, etc. coming it just doesn't seem to me to be the time to jump in quite yet. I'm primarily a PC gamer so waiting isn't too hard.

"Never going to take off, HDMI is too widespread"

LMAO.
You have a very odd definition of what constitutes "widespread" if you seriously imagine HDMI (and the kit to make full use of it) is actualy anything remotely approaching "widespread".

"and DisplayPort does not offer anything new..."

- Except much higher bandwidth etc.

Considering the way the Sony fanclub got themselves so hot and moist about the difference they imagine between HDMI 1.2a and 1.3/1.3a (and be honest 'imagine' is what it boils down to in 99.9% of cases seeing as so few actually have the kit to make full & proper use of any kind of HDMI nevermind the very latest version) I find that pretty amusing.

MS is slowly copying PS3...

HDMI port, HDD required.. What next, Blu-Ray?

Score: 0

yeah they're copying the PS3 because it's the only entertainment device to have an HDMI port. They already have hard drives on their models and should have had them required from the start. Maybe they're copying the XBOX I. From what I recall, the only way to get a hard drive for a PS 2 was to buy final fantasy or some such

At least that's an option. Not so much with the PS3 going with an HD-DVD.

Wonder why they did a "quiet" upgrade. Figure their marketeers would be all over this.

Score: 0

Probably as not to upset customers who recently purchased. And, so they could still finishing selling out the non-HDMI versions without customers noticing.

If they did a big announcement, they'd have to recall the non-HDMI versions or put them at a discount.

Score: 0

|

Kind of like Sony is doing with the PS3 60GB model eh?

A discount...maybe MS should do it to get a temporary boost in sales as well :p.

But of course MS is the leader, so a boost in sales will only further establish them as such, while for Sony they need every sale they can get any way they can get it.

Overall...the PC is best 4 games!!!
