Xbox 360 Price Cuts Arrive Wednesday
By Ed Oswald | Published August 7, 2007, 11:31 AM
Confirming earlier speculation, Microsoft on Tuesday announced price cuts on the Xbox 360 that will take effect tomorrow..
As rumored in late July, pricing on the Xbox Premium will be lowered by $50, the Elite by $30, and the Core system by $20. The new pricing places the three consoles at a price of $349, $449, and $279 USD, respectively.
For the moment, the changes will reach United States consumers only. Microsoft says, "We will announce other regional price decreases at the appropriate time," but declined to provide further specifics.
Microsoft also announced that it will be producing a special version of the console for its Halo 3 game that is priced at $399 USD and will become available in September. The console has a special Spartan green and gold finish with matching accessories.
The price cuts follow a move to help sell the remaining models of Sony's PlayStation 3 60GB version, which is now offered at $499 USD. Once supplies are depleted, only the 80GB version at $599 USD would be available. Sony said it had "several months" of 60GB console inventory in mid-July.
"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360," Microsoft Entertainment and Devices marketing chief Mitch Koch said.
Indeed, Microsoft was able to keep its launch price for 21 months -- whereas the PlayStation was forced to make changes only eight months after its launch, and in Japan before the console even made it to the store shelves.
Regardless, Nintendo still seems to be the real winner this console cycle. After being written off over the Wii, the device has become a cult favorite and could very well surpass the Xbox as the number one console this generation.
Supplies of the Nintendo Wii are still extremely tight some nine months after its launch, and checks at Philadelphia area retailers still showed little -- if any -- available stock.
According to nexgenwars.com, which estimates console sales, the Xbox 360 has sold about 11.79 million consoles, compared with 9.46 million for the Wii, and nearly four million for the PS3.
Well, I would be very wary of buying an Xbox, it seems the "fixes" don't actually address the reasons for failure, merely extend the amount of time before it fails.

The Xbox needs a total redesign. Hopefully the 65nm falcon may be this redesign, but the 90nm units with modifications are certainly not..
The discounts annoucned here, to try and clear the faulty stock won't work...

Only in the world of the zealot could a 3 year warranty be considered a 'bad thing'.......right up until their own beloved starts doing it, then it'll become amazing customer support.
The whirling around in ludicrous circles over this issue has just been hysterically funny.

2/ Only in the world of the zealot could a unreliable terminally ill console be OK because of a partial 3 year warranty.

|The sad thing is, since the announcement that GTA IV is not being released until 2008, the PS3 has no blockbuster titles for the upcoming holiday season... that would have been their only one. Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that games sell a game console. It's the way it's always been. Final Fantasy VII was the clincher on the original PlayStation for me. Since that time I had purchased dozens of games for that console, but had FFVII not been released, I probably would have never purchased it.
It doesn't make me feel bad for Sony, but it does make me sympathetic towards PS3 owners. They have really gotten the shaft so far with a potentially incredible piece of hardware.

I find it humorous that you can only see Sony in your world. There is two other consoles out there that are doing very well, in fact better than Sony at this time. Like I said, there are no blockbuster titles being released in time for the holiday season... exclusive or otherwise. When GTA IV finally hits the shelves, I expect sales boosts of both the 360 and the PS3. Neat features sell a game console... great GAMES sell LOTS of consoles.
...and it's only fair that Sony be an "exclusive" for UT3, as Microsoft has had their fair share of success with Halo and Gears of War. Let them have it, I say. Too bad their online experience is a far cry from Microsoft's.

You write,
"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves may have let something slip that American consumers weren't supposed to know: there really is no "price cut" for the PS3."
"No price cut for the PS3"... "Let it slip"... Makes it sound like they are lying and they let it slip and that the price is still 599. The question was asked and he responded. How is this a slip?
The price was 599, now it’s 499. Sounds like a price cut. Though at launch, there was a $499 option, this was almost impossible to find and has been discontinued for a really long time. How is this not misinforming people and spinning news?
All I’m saying is that the manner in which you write your articles is misleading and is spinning. I hope you don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I don’t want to read that everything is sunny and roses with the PS3 camp, I would read ps3fanboy.com if I wanted that. I know that ps3 is struggling big time; nobody is saying that they are not. Of course it's a price cut. Before E3, the 60GB PS3 was $599, now it's $499. How it that not a price cut?
I notice also with interest, that when Xbox 360 drops $20 - $50, to clear the stock of the 90nm units in preparation for the 65nm HDMI enabled premiums, this IS a price cut, and not "just to clear remaining inventory of the [90nm] models."
The sad thing is, you can't even see how biased you are. when PS3 drops $100, it's not a price cut, when 360 drops $20 - $50, for the very same reason, to exhaust stock of the previous gen models, it IS a price cut.

No. When that happens, its not a price drop - its more of an inventory liquidation.
And as far as the comment about the $599 being the only one left. What else can be said? Sony has not told us anything to the contrary. So as things stand today, with the information that is in front of us, when the $499 PS3 is sold out, all that will be left is the $599 PS3.

What are you talking about? The PS3 was having a clearance sale not a price cut. They dropped the price of the 60GB PS3 to get rid of it so they can replace it with a different model at the 60GB old price point.(Yes they have in NO WAY hinted they will drop the price of the 80GB whenever the 60 is gone)
MS is simply having a price cut. Now if they only dropped the price of the core and discontinued THEN it would be like what Sony is doing. But that isn't the case. Companies make hardware improvements all of the time. But on the 360 the specs of the console is NOT changing in any way. This IS NOT the case on the PS3. You can try to SPIN it anyway you want, but the reality is Sony was having a Clearance Sale and MS is having a price cut. MS prices will remain at the lower price point. Sony's LIKELY will not. The facts from the top management at Sony themselves -
"global head of Sony Computer Entertainment settled the matter once and for all.
Speaking to Norwegian game-news outlet VGTV, SCEI president and group CEO Kaz Hirai said in no uncertain terms that the 60GB PS3's days are numbered.
"From a hardware perspective, the $499 price adjustment we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product," he said in an unedited on-camera interview.
"Once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to a $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy in the US market.
We found out very early on how consumers react to having just one SKU as opposed to two."
SCEA has subsequently confirmed the phase out, but emphasized that it would be gradual.
"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," Karraker told GameSpot in a follow-up interview.
"We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come."

Sony says the 60gb really is dead -
On the same day the price cut was announced, Sony announced a new 80GB PS3, a console that will be bundled with Motorstorm and will retail for $599, the same as the first.
The price cut for the 60GB PS3 was never intended to be a permanent cut for the product; it was only intended to clear out stock for the new version to be sold at the old price.
GameSpot has reported that Kaz Hirai, Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO and President, has confirmed in a video interview that the 60GB PS3s are no longer in production, and that all new PS3s will be 80GB models to be sold at $599.

Common sense dictates that if there is to be another product to fill the gap at the lower price point, it must be a PS3 that would have to be a lesser version of the 80GB model. And tell me any company that announces a price cut before they need to? Sony did the same thing. Regardless - they still never said it wasn't coming - If you look at what MS says, they don't lie - they just word things very carefully.

While I'm aware the gaming and CD portion of sony is 'separate', that's like saying Verizon wireless and Verizon are 'separate' (to which I say, BULL)
The only problem with SONY is that they're stupid enough to think the American public will take their crap lying down. HD-DVD doesn't hold quite as much, but at least their business model isn't so freaking proprietary like Blu-Ray is.

The PS3 has no less reliability issues than the 360, but what it does have more of is compatibility issues. With the eventual unavailability of the 60GB model, that will only compound the issue as Sony themselves have stated they will no longer focus on backward compatibility of PS and PS2 games (which already sucks with some of their most popular titles). If they keep shooting themselves in the feet, they won't have a leg to stand on.
"Faulty stock", hmm? How about forever getting rid of a model that has mediocre PS2 support in favor of a model that makes it worse by removing their precious "Emotion Engine"? I can only imagine that if PS2 (PS Two) sales were already higher than PS3, it will only continue to grow after that. "Faulty stock" could applied to the embarrassingly low quantity of blockbuster titles for the PS3. That's why PS2 compatibility is so important for a lot of people.
"Woohoo! An update that makes PS and PS2 games look better. I can't wait to see what GTA Vice City looks like on... oh, that game has issues, too..." Brilliant.
