Xbox 360 Top Console in September
By Ed Oswald | Published October 19, 2007, 11:55 AM
Sales of the Xbox 360 nearly doubled in September in the United States thanks to Halo 3, while the Nintendo Wii continues to post impressive sales numbers.
Research firm NPD said that Microsoft sold about 528,000 Xbox 360 consoles during the month of September, up 91 percent from the previous month. Much of this success could be pinned on sales of Halo 3, which sold 3.3 million copies during the month.
"True to its name, the game rubbed off on hardware sales too--the Xbox 360 realized its best month ever in unit hardware sales outside last holiday season," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement. The game sold twice as many as the next nine titles combined.
And the Halo effect may last into October as well. Sources tell BetaNews that internal Microsoft numbers show Xbox 360 sales continued to be brisk well into the current month as well.
What is even more surprising is the Wii's success during what should have been Microsoft's month. Sales rose to 501,000 units, up 24 percent from the previous month and a new all-time monthly high for Wii sales within the US.
Nintendo also was able to post the second most popular game title, Wii Play. 282,000 copies of that title were sold, which includes a bonus Wiimote controller with the purchase.
Continuing to disappoint, Sony's sales of the PlayStation 3 fell further during September, down nearly 10 percent to 119,000 units. Representatives for Sony shrugged off the bad news, pointing out that the company was cutting prices, and that sales should rebound.
The last time Sony cut prices on the PS3 in July, sales increased 60 percent. With the console finally coming into a price range where most customers seem comfortable, this holiday season could prove to be the final test to see whether Sony can recover from a poor start for its next-generation console.
Someone poses the question to Dave / Joey / Steve: "How's profile 1.1 coming?"
Here is his response:
"Fine thanks. There should be a PS3 firmware update to deliver it, in the next few weeks. It's also worth pointing out, Profile 1.1 spec is vastly superior to HD DVD's interative features.
Jsut watch the HD DVD drones change their track, when 5.5 Million Blu-Ray suddenly have Profile 1.1, then Interactivity won't be important any more. LOL"
First of all any format that has interactivity and is not connected via ethernet is simply an interactive CD-ROM or BD-ROM in this case.
You claim it will be "vastly superior" to HD-DVD's HDi, yet the BD spec doesn't call for an ethernet port until profile 2.0
You need to explain to me as well as everyone else how an interactive CD-ROM feature being added is somehow better than internet based interactivity like HDi.
Of course you have no answer and I am absolutely right again, making your silly BD format look like the POS we all know it is.
I almost forgot the laughable post over at blu-ray.com
There is a story titled "Warner, no profile 1.1 yet"
It's a story about how Terminator 3 will be relased with the crippled PIP that forces movie studios to limit one half of the discs storage for the movie, and the other half for the same exact movie with PIP.
It's pathetic. But what's even more pathetic is the comments from the fanboys.
Some of them went on to say "We don't need features, I just want to see the movie" The same exact jagoff who said a week before "I can't wait for profile 1.1 so we can finally shut up these HD-DUD fanboys"
You and your whole crew of sheep are absolutely pathetic Dave, just like you ran with the rumored stor of a new 360 with an HD-DVD built in.
I noticed you havent posted a word about it since it was debunked.
Did you actually read the comments about yourself here? Finally everyone knows all of your usernames and how full of crap you really are. I can't imagine what it's like to have dozens of people you never even met hate you so much.
I'm sure the people that know you personally think you're an even bigger wanker.

LOL, anyone else feel Microsoft have no gameplan when it comes to the 360? It's a comedy of errors.
Lets look at a bit of history.
PS3 ships with Blu-Ray, HDMI, standard HDD from day one.
Microsoft says HDMI, Blu-Ray or standard HDD is not needed and goes to market early claiming the PS3 features are unnecessary.
Then it changes it mind, and starts fitting HDMI on it's Elite, so everyone rushes out to buy the Elite with HDMI, then it screws these people over by fitting the previously unrequired HDMI to ALL consoles.
Not content with alienating these, it then decided that actually HDD drives ARE now needed (despite saying they would never make HDD a requirement), and creates a HDD Required Logo for new games (GTA IV reported the be the 1st game with this logo). 360 Core owners are then screwed over, fortunatly, a £100 HDD upgrade is available to provide a paltry 20GB HDD.. (phew..)
Now it seems, despite claiming that Blu-Ray was not required, and DVD9 was fine, Microsoft is now feeling like changing it's tune again, and now HD DVD is needed (unfortunatly, only the 30GB, not the full 50GB Blu-ray), and a new console is coming along to meet this requirement. Fortunatly, existing owners can also buy into the ailing HD DVD format, for an additional £150, but it only comes in White, so does not match the 360 Elite, it connects via USB, and has all the problems asscioated with ICT, because it cannot pass HDCP info. Did I also mention it sounds louder than a jet taking off in your living room?
You honestly couldn't make it up.
Off course, I am being kind to the 360 today, and have not brought it it's horrendous reliability track record, where todate, over 1/3 of them have failed, with that number constantly rising...

Let's look at some more history...
Sony claims that backward compatibility is important with the PS3, so the necessary hardware was included in the design. Firmware update was issued to even make the older games look better upscaled.
That didn't work.
Sony tries to reduce the price of the console by taking that hardware out, claiming that it wasn't needed as software emulation would be sufficient for backward compatibility.
It wasn't.
Sony finally said screw it, and decided to offer no backward compatibility, claiming not enough consumer demand for it, and that it was cheaper to just buy the even more crippled PS3 and a PS2 for less money. In other words, if you want backward compatibility now, Sony says buy a PS2...
You couldn't make that up.
The PS3 and Blu-ray are a comedy of delays and false promises from Sony (as usual).

The difference of course between my post, and yours, is that my post is based on truth, yours based on nonsense.
1/ All PS1/PS2 games upscale to 1080P on all revisions of the PS3 (aside obviously from the 40GB with no BC), and look considerably better). By claiming they look no better, simply shows you havn't seen GT4 or Gods Of War II in 1080P on a PS3.
2/ The removal of the EE chip from the Euro 60GB and the US 80GB machines has very little effect on the PS2 emulation. I myself have a Euro 60GB model, and every single PS2 game (from about 80), all work flawlessly. The Sony site shows over 3000 PS1 and PS2 games that work fine on the software BC models. If you want to talk backwards compatability, why not tell us how many Xbox titles work in the 360. About 200 at last count, and many of them have playability problems.
3/ If you want PS2 compatability, pay $100 more, and get the 60GB or 80GB, you get more HDD space, card readers, and 2 games. It's called choice, if you want the PS3 to play Blu-ray movies, or only PS3 stuff, then the £299/$399 model will suit you fine, if not buy the more expensive one. Before you jump in and pretend that the model with BC will eventually sell out, leaving only 40GB, don't bother. Ed Oswald tried this trick, and ended up looking a fool.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com...x-360-hd-d-6017cbb.html
Frankly, it seems that Sony is the one without a solid gameplan. Sure they have a hard-drive, but have they actually nailed down which sizes they want to offer? Why so many if one of the features is the ability to upgrade the hard-drive yourself?
How about the 'need' for Blu-ray to be standard? So far, any developer who has made statements concerning the smaller storage space of DVD9, has also found ways around the issue.
I fail to see how upgrading a new system, with both a larger hard-drive and HDMI is 'alienating' anyone. My 360 is connected via component cables, and is displaying in 1080i with no problems, whatsoever. If I go out and buy a new 1080p TV, I may feel as though I'm missing something, but honestly, I can't see a difference between the 2 at my current screen-size (40 inch). This goes for the other pieces of equipment connected as well.
The hard drive requirement issue isn't one, until it becomes one. To date there are 2 games that require the hard-drive: Final Fantasy 11 (MMORPG...so that qualifies under 'DUH'), and a European game called Football Manager (due to the sheer size of the game saves). Given that MS is in the process of releasing the Arcade SKU, it seems unlikely that there's any intention, at least in the foreseeable future, of a HD being a requirement to play certain games. It seems a little hypocritical though to damn MS for doing this, though, when Sony did the same thing with FF11, on the PS2.
It is nice to see that you cling to the old arguements about the sound of the console (something I've never noticed while either gaming or watching a movie) and color of the HD DVD drive (does anyone actually base their opinion on something like this?).
I've owned both BR and HD DVD formats in their standalone and gaming counterparts. Bluray has yet to impress me (I've since sold the BR player); while both the Toshiba player and 360 HD DVD drive work well, and have seen hours of usage. My general attitude right now is, I'll import movies that are BR exclusive (in the US) on HD DVD, when they're available. The price difference (which so far has only been 2 or 3 dollars), is worth it,

Look to the other end - the most technologically advanced console with awesome graphics is a flop! Just like in the PC games market: gameplay > eye-candy. It's all well and good have the best hardware Sony - but without some 'fun' games to play even selling your console at a loss (still) isn't going to fix your sales figures. I'd be surprised if the PS3 caught up to the 360 and Wii even if it was the same price as the two of them - solely because of the experience and games provided by the other two.

HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO STRESS READING THE ARTICLE BEFORE POSTING
Are you reading this on your Wii right now? Have you fired it up and played anything lately? According to Famitsu, almost seven out of ten Wii owners aren't using the system at all, which seems like a fairly high number. This came out in a report from Enterbrain President (and Famitsu publisher) Hirokazu Hamamura which was praising Nintendo and citing big things ahead, especially for the DS platform, which he predicts will have 30 million units in Japan in 2009.
However, it makes it hard to understand how the Wii will continue to be a success if the majority of people who bought one aren't playing it. He goes on to say that part of the problem is that the Wii hasn't had a second hit that was as big as Wii Sports. In other words, he's calling the Wii a novelty. A fad that is starting to wear thin. Remember how big Tamagotchis were? If not, then we've just dated ourselves, but if so, then you'll probably also remember how quickly they vanished after they rolled in.
While he cites the attention that Wii Fit is getting, and the coming (sometime) Monster Hunter 3, we'd like to know what sort of a polling system they're using to get these numbers...
Sounds like speculation to me...

Yep, "timed" exclusives, which are what most every PS3 "exclusive" titles are. You certainly don't see Xbox 360 exclusives going the opposite direction. Not many companies are willing to shell out the extra cash to port a title to a console that has yet to prove itself. All Bethesda added to Oblivion for the PS3 was better looking textures, easily added to the other versions. Too bad the game has already been out for 1½ years for the 360 and PC... I'm sure a lot of people have moved on from that game by now on those platforms.
Those never-ending petitions are a complete joke.
As if companies are going to listen to fanboys who try to persuade them to only release titles on one console. There is so much more money to be made by releasing on multiple platforms.
Besides, I don't know of hardly any companies in their right minds who would intentionally and voluntarily cripple their revenue by releasing titles solely on the PS3. When (if) it starts proving itself to be a viable and attractive alternative as a game console, perhaps others would take notice.

Oh there are games on the PS3, but mostly ports and multi platform titles. The phrase goes like this: There are no decent EXCLUSIVE games for the PS3. I know this will give you the urge to start listing a handful of crappy exclusives that most people don't really care about. The reality of the matter is, Sony does not enjoy the level of developer support and long list of exclusives they did back in the glory days of the PS2. All the whining and moaning on your part isn't going to change that. I know it's a real thorn in the side of every Sony fanboy, but this time around the playing field is a lot more level. In fact, it's tilted towards Nintendo at a steep angle and towards Microsoft at a shallower angle.

All the poor little Sony fans (both of them!) trying to spin things off into a Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD discussion, even when the article has absolutely NOTHING to do with either format.
You can quote whomever you want and link to whatever obscure website to prove Sony is doing great. In the end, Sony is selling less consoles each month than either Nintendo or Microsoft. As I've said many times before, use your Sony math to prove that selling less consoles each month than your competitor means you're catching up to them!
Another thing I find outright hilarious is your attempts to down play Halo 3's massive success. Talk about desperation. It's bad enough the PS3 doesn't have any decent games now or anywhere on the horizon, but Halo 3 was like throwing salt on the poor Sony fans' wounds.

Twisting the spin the other way:
Sony in total still sold more consoles in the US last month than Microsoft. And before people say ‘the psp and ps2 dont count’ of course they do. You are only saying they dont count because Microsoft dont have a handheld and they f****d up the Xbox or they would still be selling it. Its not Sony and Nintendo’s fault Microsoft dont have a good enough range of consoles to compete with them.
Sony and Nintendo are pissing on Microsoft from a great height even with Halo boosting their sales.
US September console sales by manufacturer:
Nintendo - 996,800
Sony - 618,500
Microsoft - 527,800
Japanese September console sales by manufacturer:
Sony - 613,623
Nintendo - 413,061
Microsoft - 10,574
So the total console sales in those 2 regions for September are:
Nintendo - 1,409,861
Sony - 1,232,123
Microsoft - 538,374
And that’s in the month that Microsoft released their biggest game and spent ridiculous amounts of money plugging it. Sony and Nintendo are vastly more popular with gamers than Microsoft. That is hard undeniable fact.

The Halo 3 effect on 360 console sales is way more than I ever thought I would be. Hats off to MS for showing Sony how it's done.
p.s. I have a PS3 that was the center of attention at our last Christmas party, only because you couldn't get one. I hate this machine and I only use it for playing one BD movie, Casino Royale. What a POS this thing is.
Let's all hold our breath while Sony comes up with a story for why the PS3 won't be upgradeable to 1.1 spec.
Remember, all PS3's manufactured after the deadline have to be 1.1, why do you think they are trying to get rid of the 40GBs?
To get every sucker to buy an old non 1.1 BD player before they let the world know they are screwed. It will be interesting at the end of the month when the BD fanboys are looking for thier firmware update and it doesn't come.
Sony = Soon, Only Not Yet or September, October,... Next Year. (that second one wasnt mine).

Prepare to be flamed on by Davey any second now. However, while Davey will post his link, let me be the first to say "I'll believe it when I see it." I say this considering Sonys track record of being lying sacks of sh!t.

How many of these are replacements for failed units?
30% of 10 million consoles is 3 million consoles. I bet at least some of these are RROD replacements.

These are SALES figures, not replacement consoles. You Sony shills really are grasping at straws.
I'm sure PS3 will enjoy a lacklustre holiday season. We will have to wait for Nov 08' to see any progress from the ailing console.
Good news all round for HD-DVD/MS/Toshiba patriots.

RROD errors are covered under warranty why would someone buy another one if its covered?
You need to stay in your ps3 threads or at least contribute something to the thread other then the same troll you use over and over.

Joey Deacon / Dave only posts that to get a rise out of people who don't know any better. He figures he can come in here with new names and piss off newcomers but I'm always here to show what a complete desperate loser he really is.
He hates the fact that the 360 is dominating right now, just like I said it would. You have to understand that most people don't own a PS3 and a 360. Every 360 sale is one less PS3 sale for Sony.
His P3s investment has been less than a pleasurable experience for him, this is why he and the little girls over at blu-ray.com conspire to infiltrate forums and bash anything Microsoft or HD-DVD related.
If you think I'm kidding, I'll post the whole DaveBG dossier.
Here is one little glipmse into the mind of a desperate and utterly depressed fanboy with no girl and no money.
DaveBG a.k.a Dave over at the BD forums ............ LMAO! ............ put together (get this) a petition to send to the major studios who don't support Blu Ray.
Here is the hilarious link: http://petitionspot.com/petitions/Blu-ray/
(sometimes it works, someimes it doesn't, kind of like BD extra features on POTC2 Dead Man's Chest)
Nobody has signed it in months and I'm sure those 130 blu-ray.com forum memebers will bring the MPAA to it's knees in fear with that powerful piece of lobbying.
These blu-ray.com members have deep pockets, the problem is because they all wear baggy pants and the pockets are empty. They are a bunch of angry, grungy, stoner loners who still live in mommas house.

Tens of millions of PS2. You are badly mistaken.
PS2 is an incredibly reliable console. The 360 on the other hand, is the most unreliable consumer product of all time.
Score: 0
Sony ps2 is STILL failing 15 revisions later, its not entirely reliable especially when used as a dvd player and game machine. The slim-lines heat up even faster then their previous model which makes little sense since there is less moving parts.
Pull all the numbers you want about the xbox360 the fact remains they admitted there was a problem, granted it should have been done sooner, but it happens.
Sony NEVER truly admitted the issue with the disk read errors. Even their site has a faq on disk read errors but never mentions the console could be at fault.
Also the failure rate for ps3 is 2% and I believe will increase as games come out for the device and people use it to play movies as well.

You kidding me? The PS2 is anything but reliable.

Exactly. In a large company the bottom dollar is and always will be numero uno.

Mistaken? You are blind...
It took class-action lawsuits to get Sony to admit there were several problems with every hardware revision of the PS2.
Microsoft didn't need the threat of a class-action lawsuit to own up to the problems with the Xbox 360... first revision.
You are badly unintelligent.
