Xbox Head Compliments the Wii

By Ed Oswald | Published May 11, 2006, 2:39 PM

Microsoft has informally allied itself with competitor Nintendo in the fight for supremacy in the next-generation video game race. Microsoft's vice president Peter Moore said that for the price of the top of the line PlayStation 3, a gamer could buy both the Xbox 360 and Wii.

Moore's comments were reported by Reuters Thursday, and indicate that Microsoft is ready to escalate its battle with Sony, both on the hardware front and the court of public opinion. Such talk could benefit Nintendo as well, and sway public opinion against the market leader.

The top-of-the-line PS3 would retail for $599 USD, whereas the Premium Xbox 360 system retails for $399 USD. Analysts have projected the Wii to come in at $150 to $200 USD, which was the likely basis for Moore's speculation.

Nintendo has an intellectually property advantage, Moore conceded, with the Mario, Zelda and Metroid franchises. He also complemented the company's work in designing the new console.

Additionally, Microsoft continued to dispute Sony's claims that the next generation of gaming starts with the release of the PS3 on November 17. Moore said that right now Xbox 360 holds 100 percent of next-generation console sales, and the ball was in Sony's court to take that away.

The company overall feels very good about where it stands, and is now focusing on areas where the Xbox 360 is not doing well, like Japan. Moore said new games catering to that market could help. However, he said if that does not work, Microsoft might pass the Asian market by as it is running out of options.

Will be nice from MS :) Let Asian play their adolescent games on PS3 and invest in games like Oblivion

You all need to remember 1 Thing.

Nintendo has been around the longest, and will continue to be here. Nintendo isn't going anywhere! Nintendo will continue to make fun and innovative games & Consoles for all ages!

Now, as far as the X360 and the PS3 are concerned. Those two are in direct competition. Nintendo isn't worried about those two because they are not in competition with them. M$ is trying to do what Sony did to Sega, Releasing high powered Innovative consoles and trying to push Sony out of the markett. But the problem there is that Sony has a really big freakin foot in the door, and it's not going to happen.

Bottom Line, none of these console makers are going anywhere.

I think this is great for families who have kids of all ages.

I, for one, already have a Xbox360 that I enjoy very much and can't wait to get my hands on the Wii for my younger kids (heck, for me too ;) ).

There are 2 reasons for this actually:
One, for roughly the price of a PS3, I get a whole range of game types available to me having the XBox360 and the Wii at home.
Two, to be honest, I don't want my younger ones playing on my 360 yet (It's MY machine!!! hehe) because I don't want them to break it or play around with my settings. For now, they are playing A LOT on the GameCube we have atm.

To me, it's not about technical specs, but more about variety!

PS: I have a PS2 at home as well, but to be honest, we don't have many games for it. I'm not saying it's not good or anything, but it just didn't have the types of games I was looking for my family, and preferred to wait for next generation consoles before buying games for an older audience (such as me) instead of ugrading my gaming computer.

I agree that Nintendo will have a great competitive product this time around. The Wii is not as advanced as the 360 or PS3, but it'll be the third Nintendo system I'll (and have) purchased since the SNES. Why?

A great feature that the Nintendo Wii (damn name) has over the other consoles is the ability to access the ENTIRE NES/Gameboy/SNES/64/Gamecube AND Sega/TurboGrafx library (!).

For the average age of dedicated gamers (who are almost 30 now, like me) who have been playing video games since Atari 2600 days, this is a great selling point.

I hate to say this, but I actually respect the Nintendo Wii more than I do the PS3 (with the XBox 360 being the main console). No wonder Microsoft sided with Nintendo. I know a lot of other people will disagree with me on this, but Nintendo may actually have a good system on their hands since the SNES/64.

I'm game.

The Wii maybe doesnt have the superior graphics the 360 and ps3 have but damn does it look like fun...honestly I think its going to sell well as long as it has some good games behind it the zelda game alone makes it worth it just to buy it...Now there are a lot of people who will buy a ps3 simply because it is Sony...now it is quite expensive this is true but there are people who want blue ray dvd players and I think that is what sony is betting on...you 'll be able to buy a blue ray player for 1000 or a Sony for 500 - 600...the 500 - 600 version will play movies and games plus supposedily it will make the older games look better... now the other problem Sony has is to really appreciate their console it seems you need to have an hdtv which are not a hot item yet and still expensive...so that drives the ps3 up more because if you want to experience the true ps3 power...If they do get the WII to market at $150 (sega is saying it might be) people will buy it simply to see what it can do.

Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii will dominate. Nintendo Wii looks to be very fun with its new style controller. PS3 is going to crash and burn with a $5-600 price tag not including tax. Im sorry but not too many people got that much money to sink into a console and then still have money left over too buy games & accessories.

Like too many, are you basing your judgement on the technical capabilities of the Nintendo systems? If so, that's a foolish statement, to say the least.

A friend of mine owns all three of current/last gen consoles (XBox, PS2 & GameCube), and the one that gets the most play is the Nintendo. Why? Simple because the games are more fun, even for adults. There's only so much Tekken you can play before the idea of some more Mario Kart or Smash Bros pops up in your head. ;)

Exactly. In the PS2 vs. Xbox days the PS2 fanboys always said that it’s not about the graphics, it’s about the games. But now it looks like there all contradicting them-self’s.

I already have a 360 and I’ll also probably be getting a Wii too (Why oh, why did they name it that).

I also had all tree system’s too Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube. I won the slim PS2 in a McDonald’s promotion (the PSP one) and I ended up selling it for more Xbox games (I got about $130 out of it if you were wondering). I couldn’t really find any stand out games for it that weren’t also on the Xbox (since games usually load faster and have slightly better graphics for the Xbox anyway). I mostly like FPS, I’m not a really racing fan or RPG (like Final Fantasy and Gran Trismo).

I’m getting way off topic though.
Sorry.

Nintendo's goal is be the "family" console of the gaming market. That's their niche. It doesn't need to make $400-$700 advanced gaming consoles.

It has remained true to this concept since I was 8-12 playing the NES/SNES. Hell even my grandmother loved the Nintendo (and still has it). It's market hasn't changed. When I grew up, Nintendo stayed the same (and I moved on). That's why Nintendo doesn't need Blu-Ray drives and high-end processors. It's games are "clean", easier to play, and more popular for its market.

Common sense will tell you the average child and family household will NOT spend more than $400 for a video game console. But serious and veteran gamers (like me) can and will afford to pay $400-$700 for a gaming system. Everyone knows Nintendo consoles aren't as advanced as it's competitors. This holds true for the Wii (damn name), and I accept this.

I'm actually going to buy Nintendo's next console (I haven't owned a Nintendo since the SNES). Why? I'll have access to the ENTIRE NES/SNES/64/GameCube + Sega Genesis + TurboGraphx library. This alone is worth it to me for old times sake.

Saying "Nintendo sucks" because it doesn't live up to the PS3 and 360 is foolish. You obviously don't understand it's concept and market focus.

I think Nintendo will do well this time around.

....Wow M$ and Nintedo obviously don't see the whole picture.

The Nintendo Wii: $199
A gaming console with graphics equal to that of a PS2 or less. Mainly targeting the 12Under age group.

The XBOX 360: $399 (premium)
Graphics equal to the PS3 (for now). DVD-Rom capable of 8.5Gigs of space. RF Wireless Controller. 20GB Hard drive

XBOX360 $399.99
XBOX Live: $69.99
XBOX HD-DVD Player $199.99 (guessing)

$669.97 (before tax

PS3: $599
Capable of better graphics than both the Wii and the 360. Integrates with the PSP(use it as a controller, second screen etc, Bluetooth wireless controllers with movment sensors. 60GB Hard drive, Free online play, BD-Rom Capable of 50GB. What does 50GB mean? More levels, more gameplay, Better games!

So pretty much, for your X360 to be "equal" to a PS3, you have to spend $669.97 (not including the re-occouring charges yearly by xbox live) vs $599.

Hmm....I think the PS3 wins this one :P

“....Wow M$ and Nintedo obviously don't see the whole picture.”

Hate to say it, but I think your picture is a little tainted too.

"What does 50GB mean? More levels, more gameplay, Better games!"

When did media capacity start equating to better games? More FMV?... Yes. Uncompressed audio?...Yes. But you'd be hard pushed to stuff a BD-ROM with 50GB of actual game.

Not to say there's anything wrong with Sony's console, far from it. It's a great looking system.

I just think your argument is utter rubbish.

If you throw a game orientated PC in the comparison... there you have lets say 2K worth of kit, with graphics and processing power that most exceeds (if not right now, come the next-gen of graphics cards) that of any of the three next-gen consoles. Plus u have say hundreds of gig of storage at your disposal to install games on (from whatever media)... so where are the 5 million level games with more game-play than you can shake a stick at that your argument suggests that there should be?

Finally just to really nit pick (cos I’m in the mood), the PSP as a controller while nice, really does add a wee bit of cost. The actually PS3 controller… well Sony basically chickened out cos they’re consumers don’t handle innovation too well, so went from their boomerang idea and back to a tarted up dual shock. Anyhow I like the controller they’ve settled with… it ‘innovates’ lots of Nintendo’s ideas into it quite nicely…. motion sensors and all.

PS: If it’s loads of levels and game play your after, stick to Tetris... about 100kb, plenty of space spare on that BD-ROM :O)

Why do people still claim that the PS3 will have free online play? Just because Sony is not charging for you to play a game does not mean the developer won't. Gamespot stated that Sony will allow developers to charge what they will for you to play their game because it will be hosted on their servers.

This being the case, you basicly have Xbox Live Silver, PLUS the charges from each game. Now, play 5 different games with a $2.00 a month fee per game, and you're paying more than Live Gold... (of course I realize that they may never charge, but until we know...)

Graphics does not = supremacy in the console market.

Compare XBox to PS2 - the PS2 was the one to pick, because it had better games (I'd still prefer the Nintendo, for even better games).

I'll be looking at the Nintendo, if I want a console. There's no way I'm forking out $1000 for a PS3 (prices announced in Aus). If I want good graphics, I'll play my PC. :P

Not quite. The Wii has been speculated by IGN to be roughly the power of the original X-Box or maybe a little bit more than that. Why would Nintendo downgrade to Ps2 level graphics if the Gamecube has better graphics to begin with?

The comments Microsoft made were to shun Sony out of that market. Microsoft doesn't care about Nintendo as much as you'd think. Microsoft is just aware that Nintendo does not pose a threat to them, but will use their low price tag as a key to convince people to buy two fun consoles instead of one HUGELY expensive one. (ugh, Sony is gonna get screwed)

"The comments Microsoft made were to shun Sony out of that market. Microsoft doesn't care about Nintendo as much as you'd think"

Oh I know, Microsoft isn't worried about Nintendo because they are in different classes of gaming consoles. The X360 is more so an extremist console, versus the Wii as a Family Console. The PS3 on the other hand is in DIRECT competition with the X360, So they're gonna try and push sony out of the market, Which obviously isn't going to happen.

Nintendo has been around for years and years, and will continue to thrive, I love Nintendo as does everyone else. What M$ is doing right now is the same thing Sony did with Sega, Trying to steal the best game titles from the playstation and push it out of the market. But it's not going to happen, the Playstation is WAY to popular. On top of that, the Playstation still has most of the largest game titles on the market unlike the XBOX.

"but will use their low price tag as a key to convince people to buy two fun consoles instead of one HUGELY expensive one"

that on the other hand is incorrect. If you read my post you will see that "all in all" the X360 is MORE expensive than the PS3.

Not true.

You're adding a cost for the HD-DVD player add-on that will be coming up on the 360.

Again, you are comparing specs for specs without realising the practical use of owning these equipments.

Has it occured to you that not all Xbox360 owners are going to buy the HD-DVD add-on?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not buying it (HD-DVD add-on for the 360) since I would need to invest on a new HD TV as well if I really wanted to benefit of the new resolution quality - which I'm not going to do right now
