Xbox Is #2 in Japan -- For a Week

By the Betanews Staff | Published November 9, 2007, 12:24 PM

In a potentially historic milestone, the Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3 for the first time in its history in Japan, according to statistics from Media Create. Sales of Microsoft console shot up some 500 percent on the back of the Bandai release Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which debuted at #2 on the Japanese video game charts this week.

The console sold 17,673 units during the week, up from 3,718 in the week previous. This was just enough to place it in the #2 spot ahead of the PS3, which sold 17,434 consoles. This was down week to week from 18,785 units two weeks ago. Nintendo's Wii is still outselling both by far, with 37,617 consoles sold. "Kiss your loved ones, hug your friends, because if this keeps up we've reached the end of days," Alexander Sliwinski wrote for Joystiq in reporting the news.

Looks like Joey picked up a new nick (see mano1192). The XBOX is and always be the better console. PSN truly sucks compared to XBOX Live but all Sony fanboys keep saying PSN will be better Soon ... Only Not Yet.

If you are even thinking about these two consoles, get a 360 Elite and not the ghetto core system, the PS3 is complete rushed to production joke with a sad library and a substandard Blu-Ray player.

Joey knows this and comes in here to take out his anger on everybody. He's pissed that his console / HD movie player cannot keep up with the 360 or HD-DVD.

wow 200 units for one week with people waiting for the new unit coming out next week. Hardly news but yet again BN decides to air this crap for the flamers..

It's obvious the PS3 is going nowhere. Hats off to Microsoft and the superior gaming system.

As you can see, great games sell systems, not unfinished, mediocre HD formats.

Woo, Xbox360 sells 200 more consoles for 1 week in Japan, it seems that's newsworthy.

Yet, the PS3 in UK outselling the 360 every week for the last month, by a factor of 3x seems to have been "forgotten" by Betanews.

How does it feel to be manipulated BetaPuppets?

The PS3 was released 1 year ago exactly. (November 11, 2006). Saying something has never happened when it has only been possible for a year is being seriously melodramtic. I don't own a PS3 nor do I have any intention of buying one, but think this is some major embarassment to Sony or a sign of anything is idiotic. It took a 500% increase from the previous week (directly attributed to the release of one game) and a slump by the PS3 for the XBox 360 to eke out a 200 console advantage.

Toyota surpassing GM as the #1 automaker in the world was major news as the two have been around for over 75 years, and Toyota has slowly, but steadily been catching GM for years. So there was a visible trend towards a s*** in the industry. This XBox360 "victory" is a complete fluke, that even Stevie Wonder can see will vanish be next week. Flukes aren't newsworthy.

Spoken like a true fanboy, since the playstation has been out Xbox has NEVER outsold them, so its a small victory, its significant because it shows how bad its doing.

Even squenix has signed on with MS to make games that would appeal more to the japanese crowd.

I think Microsoft could sell way more Xbox360s in Japan by releasing a special edition version renamed to SeXBox360 with a decal of some Asian girl tied up and gagged. They love that sort of stuff over there. :)

* OK OK IN DEFENCE OF SONY. (Someone has to do it)

(*fine print - I own both a wii and a 360 and do not own a PS3 yet ;)

The 40GB PS3 going for 40,000YEN ($360US) is being released on Nov 11th. This is the reason for the sales slump... I'm sure quite a few people are waiting for this release, though 17,434 regular PS3 units were sold this week in spite of this new release... I would have expected less.

Why? The majority probably don't even know the 40GB is coming.

Sony has been spreading themselves too thin for quite some time, trying to wage a battle on multiple fronts.

Sony has some really great products... others not so much. Nevertheless, Sony losing to Microsoft (whose marketing in Japan leaves a lot to be desired, to put it mildly) must be quite the wake-up call for them to start focusing on what really matters...

The PlayStation 3 is a game console first and foremost. It's time to get serious and start treating it as such.

Although it's funny to see Sony finally getting beat on their home turf like this, in the grand scheme of things it's rather insignificant. While Japan is an important console market, world wide sales figures are what really matter. The PS3 is being outsold by both the Wii and Xbox360 world wide, month after month. Even if the Xbox360 never outsells the PS3 in Japan again, the PS3 is still losing every month overall.
