Xbox Live Gets TV, Movie Downloads

By Nate Mook | Published November 7, 2006, 4:29 AM

Xbox Live VideoMicrosoft late Monday announced a major new initiative to offer television shows and movie downloads via its Xbox Live service, further transitioning the Xbox 360 from video game console to consumer home entertainment device.

The new service, dubbed Xbox Live Video, will launch on November 22 - the one year anniversary of the Xbox 360's launch. Initial content partners include CBS, MTV Networks, Paramount Pictures, TBS, UFC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Setting it apart from similar offerings, including Apple's ITunes, Xbox Live Video will support high-definition TV shows and movies. At launch, Microsoft plans to feature 200 hours of HD content and 800 hours of standard-definition content.

Purchased television shows will be owned by the customer, while the movies are supplied on a rental basis and will expire after 24 hours. TV shows can be downloaded an unlimited number of times, and are not tied to a specific console, meaning they can be played using any Xbox 360.

"This groundbreaking announcement is a win for everyone," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "It connects our partners with one of the most coveted audiences in entertainment today, and provides even greater value to our Xbox Live community, allowing them to enjoy the games and entertainment they want, when they want it."

According to Microsoft, all purchases will be downloaded -- not streamed -- and HD content will be encoded using the company's VC-1 codec in 720p, 6.8Mbps video with 5.1 surround sound.

Because HD movies will take up nearly 5GB of storage space and television shows over 2GB, Microsoft is planning to begin selling an larger removable hard drive add-on for the Xbox 360. The company was previously rumored to be readying a 100GB hard drive, which it referenced at the X06 conference in Korea.

Microsoft has not yet disclosed pricing for the downloads, but Xbox Live Video is expected to be competitive with other such services.

JupiterResearch vice president Michael Gartenberg says that although games will still be the primary focus of the Xbox 360, video downloads do open a new avenue for adding market share and better competing with the likes of Sony and Apple.

"It's not a direct competitor to iTunes for now," Gartenberg remarked. "But, there's no doubt that XBox, as a conncted device that's hooked up a to the TV will be important for Microsoft as a core endpoint in the digital home. Look for larger drive capacities as well as integration with Zune and the PC in the not too distant future."

Let me also add that regardless of hardware specs I believe it comes down to games ad online capabilities in which MS is about 2-3 years further in development than Sony. But that said Sony has the option to constantly update this with firmware updates.

All in all I believe Sony & MS will split here, Wii will dominate in Japan and PS3 will win in Europe.

Its my father in law and he is the lead electrical engineer at IBM in Poughkeepsi NY, look it up and so be so quick to judge.

I am not biased and I stand by that, but I have to lean on the PS3 side for the shear fact that I dont believe the Xbox can provide what gamers expect for this next console cycle. Its was rushed to get to the market first with the compromise in technology. Msoft said grabbing early market share was worth more than putting more into the hardware, and as of right now it looks as though it has payed off well in the short term. But no1 here can tell me that the graphics on the 360 will be anywhere near tolerable in about 2-3 years neverless the full 5-6 year console cycyle. Look at the big picture- PC's are on quad SLI's currently and right now they are in development o the GPU on the same DIE and the CPU, yes this is a couple years out but... All Im saying is that with the rate of technology change why would you release a poduct that is already outdated at time of release?

Whats the point of purchasing a TV show?? Thats a rip off IMO, if you have a DVR u can record HD content for free (besides the cost of owning 1).
I think the movie download is a great idea and sony should try to achieve the same feature in their online service.

I am still unbiased and would not buy either console at this time due to the fact that a family member is a lead engineer that work on both processors and said that both chips were extremely rushed for launch and both need several revisions to get the chips to 100% efficiency. But with that said I will be buying a PS3 as I was told from the man who developed both chips that the PS3 architecture if leaps and bounds ahead of the xbox. Not only that but in playing the 360 I am very uimpressed, actually its quite pathetic! My PC has HAD better graphics for over 2 years than this junk box. Granted as the devs will be expanding on the 2nd gen games the system is currently outdated and is not worth purchasing something that cannot give me 5 years worth of "impressive" graphics and gameplay. Gears of war is impressive utilizing bloom lighting effesct, but I have seen this effect for over 2 years on PC games, sorry but just doesnt impress me.

What if your DVR didn't catch the show? Or you don't have one? There are plenty of valid reasons for purchasing a show. Its not for everyone, but it is for some. I've actually found it useful for long trips and purchased them for my ipod. I don't see my getting them on my 360 though.

And do you have a split personality? One minute you say your aren't biased and then you bash the 360 and say you are getting the PS3.

I think graphics are fairly equal between the two consoles, so if you think 360 graphics are no good, then you'll probably be disappointed with PS3.

He is always saying negative things about any positive XBOX news and always putting a positive spin on bad news for Sony or Blu-Ray.

Now, way back when Circuit City's abortion named Divx was introduced, they also planted people in forums and opened thier own "fan sites" for Divx. Which they were busted on several times.

What I don't understand though is why you think more capacity will get bluray to win.

There are 2 uses for each of these formats. Movies and Data. HD-DVD could certainly win for movies and lose for data. Bluray might win in the data arena, but it probably won't survive as there are many things in the future that will surpass it.

For simple home viewing of movies, HD-DVD is all that is needed.

I already told you, I'm not a big fan of Sony but if it came down to it I will buy both players if I had to. I think a hybrid player would solve the mess and I will buy both Blu_Ray and HD-DVD discs.

I just dont see where you and Mark are so one sided, the numbers are showing one thing and you are wishing for another. Let's see what happens a few weeks after PS3 comes out.

I think the numbers will go up for Blu_Ray myself, but you never have anything good to say about HD-DVD.

Sony has had huge problems so far with Blu-Ray, if they force the public to decide on one or the other, HD-DVD should win out judging by the numbers so far.

I would say Blu_Ray having about 9-10 percent of the next gen DVD market and player sales is a problem for Blu_Ray, would you agree?
