Xbox Live TV Shows, Movies Go Live
By the Betanews Staff | Published November 22, 2006, 6:44 PM
Microsoft began offering access to hundreds of television programs and movies through the Xbox Live service Wednesday, drawing on content from partner networks CBS, MTV Networks, TBS, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and movie studios Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros Home Entertainment. Content would be made available in both high-definition as well as standard-definition formats.
Users would be able to download and own the television shows, as well as rent movies. High-definition TV shows cost 240 Microsoft points, and standard-definition 160 points. New release HD movies would cost 480 points, and SD 320; meanwhile, classic films would be sold for 360 points in HD and 240 points in SD. HD purchasers would also be permitted to download the SD version at no charge, Microsoft said.
When is MS going to up the HDD space? 20GB isn't going to cut it anymore.

My guess is. If it will be adopted and it'll make a decent profit for Microsoft they will drop the price for the Xbox so more people will buy it. I think very good move.

By the way if you want to know it's about 80 points per dollar. I broke it down here:
Shows:
HD: $3
SD: $2
Movies:
(New)
HD: $6
SD: $4
(Classic)
HD: $4.50
SD: $3.00
The price's arn't too bad. It would be cheaper than watching the movie on Blue-Ray or HD-DVD. And I normally watch movies only once anyway.

What about if you miss one of your favorite shows? One that's kind of like Heroe's (I know it's not on Live currently, but let's just use it for an examle for now) that is a continued story. Wouldn't you like to be able to just download it? I bet the commercials would be cut too, which would also be nice.

PS3 has downloadable movie and TV content also, so it's not "just because your jealous", if you want to be picky PS3 is MORE suited for movie and TV downloads, as it has 3x bigger harddisk, and facility to fit standard 2.5in IDE HDD to upgrade futher.
I understand the attraction of the movie downloads, as it costs money to watch movies, be it on DVD at at the cinema, or downloaded onto a console, but F.T.A. TV shows, free on TV or costs money to download to a console, who wants that???
PS. It's $499 and up, you can add $101 to the price if you want, but it make you look like a rabid xbox fanboy..

Like I said though, what if you missed the show you were interested in. And you wanted to to still wanted to still watch it. I'd pay $3 to watch it in HD.
Plus there's probaly no ad's in it either.
"if you want to be picky PS3 is MORE suited for movie and TV downloads"
Well not really, because the movies expire after a while (so you have to delete them anyway after you see them) and the shows you can download them as many times as you want once you pay for them (there tied to your Xbox Live account). So space isn't too much of a necessity. It just saves me $200.
PS:
"It's $499 and up"
Well, yeah; but my point was that it's $200 (or more) than the Xbox 360. And good luck finding one at the store for $499 (hince the and up). You would have to be a "rabid" PS3 fanboy to point that out.

2/The PS3 is more than capable, plus it's got a web browser, making it an ideal secure DRM movie platform..
Or of course, if your so inclined, you can get your content for free, as the PS3 will also support Bittorrent...

|If they do though, Sony will be just to copy Microsoft once again.
I could see Sony not wanting to do downloadable movies though too so that they can push there Blue-Ray format instead. I know MS has the HD-DVD add-on too (oops, I guess bolt-on), but that's not made by MS; so they have no need to push it.
"Or of course, if your so inclined, you can get your content for free, as the PS3 will also support Bittorrent..."
There probably are a lot of restrictions with that though too. Like does the PS3 play Divx/Xvid, or able to Unzip/rar a file? Having a PSP, Sony might even come up with firmware updates to try to stop illegal things though too (they'll want you to buy shows and movies from them instead).
But actually the 360 can play downloaded shows too though the built-in Media Center Extender (if you want to go the illegal way). You can stream any video's/music/pictures that you have on your computer though your network.
What's kind of cool too is I can also play HD wmv video's on my 360 too. It'll play it from CD, DVD, an external HD or MCE. I like to download the 720p HD video's on Gamespot.com (mostely Video Reviews, Gears of War looks great) and watch them on my 50" plasma TV (just to let you know, it's a Toshiba... not a Sony:).

PS3 can boot Linux, legally, you can run Bittorrent, play Xvid, unzip/unrar, run Firefox, infact pretty much anything you can compile on Linux for a PC, will compile on Linux for PowerPC, which is used for PS3.

There are apparently a couple of restrictions, nothing earth shattering, and some may be resolved when YellowDog Linux is released in a week or 2.. Currently there is no linux Wifi driver (wired works like a champ), and apprently you can't access Blu-Ray movies under liux as the content is encrypted, you can however access the drive. You can fully access the GPU, but you cannot use Sony PS3 graphics API, you have to use OpenGL.
Still it's nice to be able to do all this stuff.
Score: 0
|They don't have it now so there's no reason to tout a nonexistent feature (I have a PS3 on my Game shelf along with my 360, Wii and others).
It's capable but having a web browser has absolutely nothing to do with making it an ideal DRM platform, having a web browser lets it surf the net, which is a feature the 360 cannot do, by itself.
Sony has said nothing at all about supporting Bitorrent (yes I know you can install Linux and run a client, but then you can't run PS3 games at the same time so not very useful for the average consumer, for people who want to steal content sure, but we are talking about legitimate stuff) and probably wouldn't since the don't want to get sued out of existence for supporting illegal content, so are you just making this stuff up?

- $200 Cheaper
- The Xbox has more games
- The 360 has been out longer so most hardware glitches have been taken out. While the PS3 probably won't for a while.
- Better Online (Tony Hawk's Project 8, which TH was invented on the Playstation, has online on the 360 version but doesn't have any online at all for the PS3 version.)
- 360 has quicker loading times
- Most games will be multi-platform
- Graphics are basically the same (most games will probably now be developed for the 360, then ported over to the PS3; kind of like it was before, most PS2 games being ported to the Xbox 1... the 360 is also easier to delevope for)
- Some games are already cheaper on the 360 (like PGR3 for $29.99) while most PS3 games are going to be $59.99 (for now anyway).
- HD-DVD is optional if you care to watch movies. If you don't care about movies, then you can save your $200 (or spend it on more games).
- You can go to the store now and pick up a 360. ;)
"and movies I want to play"
Well actually, if you didn't read the article, you can download HD movies now for only $6... which is way cheaper than paying about $30 for the HD-DVD or Blue-Ray versions.
