Yahoo Begins Testing New Web Mail

By Nate Mook | Published September 14, 2005, 11:40 AM

Yahoo on Tuesday began a limited beta test of a new Web mail system, which includes a redesigned interface that mirrors desktop-based clients like Microsoft Outlook. Drag and drop features are supported through DHTML, and a new search engine brings added support for attachments.

Yahoo said in June it was planning to launch a new version of Yahoo! Mail that would feature an instant preview pane. Many of the changes in the beta were taken from the company's acquisition of Oddpost last year. Users who dislike the new version will be given an option to switch back to the traditional interface.

When are other webmail providers such as Yahoo and Gmail going to get with the program and offer synchronization features found in Exchange Server, MOOL (Microsoft Outlook Live), IMAP, LDAP?

For a feast of screenshots head over to http://www.neowin.net/fo...ex.php?showtopic=371904

I posted a bunch there.

The Beta supports Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher (5.5 works fine but you will get a few glitches here and there), Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox and Netscape 7.2 or higher.

No Opera support and no Safari support.

Thanks for posting that. But why are all the screenshots shrunken? I can't even read the text in the prompts because of it =((

Am I the only one who hates that Yahoo makes me sign in EVERY 24 HOURS? I mean *please*! At least give us the option of the cookie lasting longer!

I don't have that problem. but then again, I use opera. maybe it handles things differently than whatever browser you use.

I would use yahoo mail if they gave pop/smtp support for free.

Try using Thunderbird with the Web Mail and Yahoo extensions. I am able to pop get all my email from Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail and GMail.

I use firefox for everything...except Yahoo email. It would be nice if Yahoo supported firefox, but I don't mind switching to IE for email. If only I was one of the chosen for beta tests..

I use Firefox v1.0.6 and I can view Yahoo email just fine. I have the AdBlock extension loaded and it hides/removes the greater majority of advertisements in the Free email services.

firefox is supported. I've used it for the new mail myself.

Doing away with IE isn't an option for majority of people. I use both for different things, so crying about the webmail requiring IE, it's not Yahoo's fault other browsers can't support the same quality design as IE.

I was selected. It wanted me to use IE6. I declined. End of story. I don't care what the features are, I'm not changing my web browser just to have "cool" looking email clients.

Then WTF are you here? Go, use Linux, delete Microsoft windows, use open office, and stay with your overblown Gmail, from Firefox. case close, you dork. We don't need you. See ya!

If it was just looks, I would agree with you. But Yahoo! seems to be excited about better functionality with this upgrade.

In a heartbeat, I would use an alternative browser just for that. Heck, just set Yahoo! mail to your home page in IE, so that that's all you use in it. I wouldn't even think twice about it.

I'm happy you don't need me. But I'll stick around as long as I can troll right along with you.

Actually, the system requirements are:

IE 5.5 and higher (for Windows)
Firefox 1.0
Mozilla Suite 1.7
Netscape 7.2

The help page incorrectly states that IE 6 is required, but 5.5 works just fine.

I think you have to be selected. Not everyone will have it available, it seems. Which is very disappointing!
