Yahoo Ships Customized IE7 Beta 2

By Nate Mook | Published June 10, 2006, 1:41 AM

Yahoo! on Friday released its own customized version of Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2, which sets Yahoo as the default search provider and makes the browser load up the portal's services upon launch. Yahoo's homepage loads in the first tab with Yahoo! Mail in the second.

"Yahoo! used the beta version of the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) to customize IE7 to meet their needs. The IEAK is available to all developers and partners who want to create their own customized versions of IE7, as well as IT pros who want to use it to ease enterprise deployment," explained IE7 program manager Dean Hachamovitch.

Does anyone know if IE7 now works with the beta mail from Yahoo? I tried it a bit back, but had to uninstall it because it was incompatible.

You can get the same functionality in IE7 that you might already have downloaded to your PC.

Open Yahoo on the first tab, Yahoo Mail on the second tab and then go into Internet Options and make all of those tabs your "Home Page(s)".

Goto http://www.yahoo.com/r/1f and add Yahoo Search as your default search.

why why why ??? users can do what they like to there own browser set home pages, default web search etc why would yahoo treat customers’ with complete stupidity we are not all daft if we want yahoo it is only 1 click away. Why does this bother you so much? I'm sure that it is frustrating for Yahoo to have their customers taken to a Microsoft portal page instead of their own. By your own statement, users can still do what they like to with their own browser. Yahoo isn't changing functionality here.

if you dont want to use a Yahoo! customized browser than dont download it. what are you going to expect since it is a customized browser? ofcourse they are going to plug their stuff. i thought that was obvious.

No, Beta 2 is only in the name because it sounds better.

It's a finished product.

The ironic thing about this browser, is that it's suppose to be a customized YAHOO version, yet, it can't view the new Yahoo Home Page, or the New Beta Yahoo Email Page....Go figure.....lol

Didn't they do this very same thing with IE6?

Not exactly. It was actually ISPs (such as SBC, now known as AT&T) which partnered with Yahoo as a "portal content provider." The ISPs were the ones who distributed the customized IE, and the customizations went to ISP-branded versions of the Yahoo site instead of the regular public Yahoo pages. As an example, see http://sbc.yahoo.com/ (you won't get far without an SBC/AT&T login; regular Yahoo logins are not good enough).

Thanks for the memory refreshment. I couldn't remember exactly. I vaguely remember at one point having IE6 with a yahoo logo where the revolving globe was.

That's kind of weak. Changed the homepage? Set itself as the default? If people want that, they would've done it. Just like people switching from the default MSN Search to mainly Google.

Is this is a direct attempt at Google's Firefox support?

If you download a Yahoo branded version of IE7 you would probably want Yahoo as your default search and homepage... if not change it.

I don't think it's weak at all. If Yahoo wants to bring their customers a "Yahoo ready" browser, more power to them.

The fact that Microsoft gives them that ability is awesome. At least Yahoo is embracing the technology by making their search engine and websites the defaults in a Yahoo optimized version, instead of crying about it like Google is.

A "Yahoo ready" browser is any browser that displays Yahoo's code and permits full use of services. Namely *most* modern browsers.

As for the "awesome" customisation tools, when IE7 supports skins and extensions (optional feature enhancements & additional functionality), then perhaps it might be considered "awesome". Until then, there's always Firefox.

IE7 does support plugins. Here it is: http://www.ieaddons.com

In fact, IE has supported plugins for some time. But it's not as easy to develop & deploy as FF plugins.

Anyway, I still think FF is bit better than IE7, although IE7 looks very promosing.

Please no. The people who works for Opera are nice enough ;) ...

Seriously, probably would be a good idea for both parties, but I found it very unlikely.
