YouTube Clip Lambasting Thai King Removed
By the Betanews Staff | Published April 5, 2007, 12:24 PM
A YouTube user responsible for creating a 44-second clip mocking Thailand's king Bhumibol Adulyadej removed the clip sometime Thursday, however a ban on the site within the country still remains. According to the Thai government, two offensive images were still on the popular social video site, and until those are removed the ban would stay in place.
Adulyadej is revered as near-divine in Thailand and criticizing or offending royalty is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. However, the country has also been criticized for its shaky commitment to democracy, and has seen 18 separate coups in just the past 75 years. In responding to the Thais, YouTube said it would look into the matter, although it aims to provide a community where users are free to express themselves.
yes we hate politicain who only wants power and benefits to themselves , but our king wants thai citizens to be happy living in thailand under king bhumibol is the best thing i could wish for , i cant imagine thailand without a king especially this king well if u have a father or a mother who support u and suddenly they've been taken away from u can u still live well maybe yes but how would u feel?

|it was dissapeered not because of the king but because of thai people who love the king and cant stand it , when i watched it ,it really hurts my feeling so does my frend's and family who watched it, we r all cannot stand the clip it's like if u watch someone u love being disrespected by some people who dont know anything at all, do that person know what our king gives us do they know how proud we r of thai culture and the way we are so if u dont know anything leave us alone ,
and that swiss guy , he lived in thailand for 10 years or so then he probably got drunk or something , u guys letting an idiot ruined ur judgement , we cant as in thai people cant stand him doing that to our king ,it's not like that's the king desired , he is so kind he probably dont care what we the swiss guy did , but he let that happend because it's every THAI PEOPLE 's desire
btw so it's ok ,according to freedom of speech, a clip that someone abused someone and posted it on well...umm... myspace , so the only thing that was wrong there is the abusing part but the part that the person posted it on myspace is OK .

so the military government blocks youtube... are we supposed to feel angry at the government for limiting our access to info?
Youtube people refused to remove the clip that mocks the Thai king, claiming that it's freedom of speech, of expression, of action or whatever. Foreigners just dont understand many of delicate culture embedded in Asian society. And sometimes blame those culture as an obstacle to development:source of our forever lacking behind the rich countries. No matter what, people living half way across the world will never understand and probably never try to. How ignorant!
This clip will create so much controversy in Thailand, Have they ever ****ing consider that? What if the issue escalated into something violence like in the case of that cartoonist mocking the Prophet Mohammad? Will youtube do anything to resolve the matter? NO.
maybe this is youtube's new philosophy; whatever happen in other country is none of our business, even if it's caused by their extreme ignorance!..umm..sound familiar? just like many of the american foreign policy.

|That's a bunch of crap. So every time some other country or group whines about something YouTube should remove the video? What about the rest of the world? Don't they have a right to express themselves without being censored because of one group of people? I understand they were offended, but here's an idea. Just don't watch it.

|Oooh, don't offend the King! In my opinion calling oneself "Royalty" these days is tantamount to a hate crime, but then I'm living in the 21st century.
I guess the English still need that direct line to the Almighty via the Monarch that they as common folk cannot possibly achieve. That could be the only reason that ridiculous institution prevails in a so-called enlightened age.

|Why are you dragging them into this? At least they don't throw a hissy fit or imprison people for making fun of the Queen. You may or may not have seen the recent South Park episode where she blew her brains out. Were there any mass demonstrations, calls to ban South Park or threats of death and destruction over that? I don't think so.
Judging from the Thai responses on that YouTube video many Thais were acting just as bad, if not worse, than the Muslims who freaked out over the Muhammad cartoons. At least he is a religious symbol, King what's his name is just a person. He is NOT a god. He may be a great guy, I don't know, but he is no more above being made fun of than anyone else. Just goes to show what a backwards country that really is.

|I'm guessing you know jack s*** about Britain. We don't revere the Royal Family. Quite the opposite, actually. We know they're spoilt, inbred, and stupid. They're often ridiculed on TV and the press, and nobody considers themselves a lesser human being than the Royals.
The Royal Family continues to exist because we don't want a politician as our head of state, and because they generate tourism.

|I suggest you bone up on history, before you accuse others of ignorance. Let me know when you or one of your "commoner buddies" are going to be the next king of england, since the position is obviously now open to anyone according to your logic.

|Oh sorry, I guess killing off your rivals doesn't count? Yes, but that was years ago. I guess they all deserved it back then.
If the queen had any respect for other people she really would blow her brains out.

|What does any of that gibberish have to do with your earlier statement that the royal family is revered? You are obviously just trolling, and making a jackass of yourself.

|That's an old and tired answer, calling somebody a troll, shame on you. A Monarchical system is a hate crime, but you're too stupid to understand it.

Now it's your turn little troll, come up with some oh so clever reply. Try to offend me, I know you want to. You can't resist.
