iPhone Leading US Smartphone in July
By Ed Oswald | Published September 4, 2007, 11:34 AM
Apple's iPhone led all other phones in its class during the month of July, a report from iSuppli indicates.
1.8 percent of all phones sold in the United States during the month were Apple's, which is the highest of any smartphone and equal to the sales of the LG Chocolate, the leading feature phone. iSuppli categorizes the iPhone as a "crossover" phone, because it has aspects of both categories.
Most of those who purchased the phone in July were male, 35 years of age or younger and were college educated. A quarter of those buying the phone switched to AT&T as a result, iSuppli found.
"It's likely that the speed of the iPhone's rise to competitive dominance in its segment is unprecedented in the history of the mobile-handset market," the research firm said, adding the hype preceding the device was unlike any other phone, and probably has contributed to its success.
However, it warned that real proof of the iPhone's staying power would come in the not too distant future as demand stabilizes. Even so, iSuppli continues to believe that Apple will sell 4.5 million iPhones during the year, and 30 million by 2011.
The phone is pretty cool. Most people I know bashing it have never picked one up and actually played with it yet. If it was offered on Verizon I would consider it. ATT/Cingular/whatever is one of the worst in terms of coverage and service in my area, so I wouldn't consider switching providers for a phone. I'll wait. Maybe the price will fall when it becomes available from other providers.

|I admit it's nice to look at, and to use. I have used a friends. If it were not for the price and AT&T lock-in, I would probably have one.
As it stands, I will likely be importing a MiniOne from Meizu when it's released either later this year or early next year.
Cheaper, faster, more functionality minus the multi-touch. Win some, lose some.

|I agree with you that most people bashing the iPhone has never even touched one, probably 90% of them. My girlfriend's sister has one so I know the iPhone inside out. It is a very nice product, except for, the $600 price tag, it's locked, one network, no 3g, no removable battery, just one of those things for me is a deal breaker. And compared to 3G, data is really slow.
Personally, I find that Apple makes the worst business decisions. It's a miracle that they're still in business. You'd think they'd learn from their passed mistakes and/or learn from others. But no, they're just to smart for that. Where would Nokia, Motorola and the rest be if they decided make phones that were only available on one particular network. Apple seems to forget that there are people all over the world that use cell phones regularly not just the US.
(US 270 million potential customers - the rest of the world 6 billion potential customers)

|I always wonder how people can be any more dumb?
Ipod was nothing more than stripped down Linux (FREE) + fancy interface (not mean usefull, I about that stupid wheel) + very powerful marketing. Creative Zen millions time better, but army of dumbs rule the market at the moment. The same store about iPhone - 3Gen phone, basic features, expensive, without any good camera and sound, its nothing comparing to latest HTC Touch or Nokia models. But again growing army of dumbs with a huge Apple marketing recources try to rule the market.
But guess what? Biggest growing mobile markets - india, china and africa. they don't need smartphone and ipod like gui, why the hell i need touch screen somewhere in desert or jungle? Smart guys like Nokia, sony-erricson moves toward cheep-like-nothing mobile phones... Good luck iPhone....

|Well the iphone is a pretty big leap ahead. Now add in the fact its an ipod on top of being a phone, with lots of new features. It does make sense. The 2nd generation iphone is going to be 10 times better in every way no doubt, which im sure will be out in a year or so.
Apple has a true fanbase and they always have. I have no doubt Apple with its current momentum will continue to make come back and dominate each area its in, its not too far fetched to believe the mac will get back up to say 20 percent market share, considering it can run windows as well in the next few years.
Call me crazy.

|Come on--- "Smartphone" is just a marketing term. They're simply comparing the iPhone against other PDAs that have phones in them.
And having used pretty much every one of those "smartphones" over the last 6 years, I would definitely add my vote to the iPhone, particularly now that it has been hacked so that 3rd party apps can run on them.
iFuntastic, anyone?

|Exactly.
I use APPLOADER to load any 3rd party apps on my iPhone. iFuntastic is good too.
I have IM, NES, VNC, VRemote, BBView, iHex, and a few others directly loaded on the iPhone.

|actually no the are not. treos and blackberrys as well as the samsung blackjack are pda devices not smartphones.
the 3125 from att is a smartphone. simply put a smart phone is not capable of doing everything a pda device can, just like an iphone. thats why the have different data plans, just as other smartphones have different data plans.
smartphones don't sell because they are near the expense of a pda but are not worth the price. the iphone is even more expensive than pdas and cannot do everything a pda does, but ooo it has a touch screen.
iphone sells because of marketing, not because it is a sound device.

|Such as? Try to remember that the iPhone is running OS X. And even though Apple hasn't released an SDK, more and more 3rd party apps are showing up every few HOURS.

That's taken from the Wiki article on Smartphones.
Smartphones are phones that you can install software on. Software, not web apps.

While that is the obvious choice I'll find you some more references because apparently Wiki isn't good enough for you. Obviously I don't use wiki as a reference for research in the real world, but as I'm talking to you over the internet about a product neither of us own (more than likely) I didn't see fit to put too much effort in to my reply.

Do I have to explain how words work to you now?
A word fits into a category if it fulfils all the criteria.
If it doesn't, then it is not in that category.
The iPhone is in a category of its own. Whether that category is 'Eye candy', 'Huge R&D bill', or 'A bit too expensive' I don't care, but you ain't puttin' it in Smartphone.
