65 nm GPU for Xbox 360 'Jasper' due in August

By Tim Conneally | Published May 9, 2008, 12:06 PM

The latest update to Microsoft's Xbox 360 not only gives the console a 65 nm CPU, but a similarly-profiled GPU, enabling the whole unit to consume less power, and therefore run cooler and more quietly.

As most fans of the console -- certainly those who eagerly awaited the release of Halo 3 -- know, any Xbox 360 manufactured after August 2007 has what is known as the "Falcon" chipset: a 65 nm CPU coupled with a 90 nm GPU. The "Jasper" evolution of the 360 is expected to come to market at the end of this summer, with a GPU also sporting a 65 nm profile, and the "Valhalla" model with a 45 nm CPU is expected in Fall 2009.

The 65 nm Xenon microprocessors are packaged and tested by IBM, and both the graphics chips and the northbridge (memory controller hub) components are made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which are then packaged and tested by ASE. Nanya Technology Corp. manufactures the chip connection ("flip chip") substrate.

Inventory of those 90 nm "Falcon" motherboards made by IBM and Chartered Semiconductor in the first quarter of this year have reportedly been depleted, necessitating production of the upgrade.

never heard of a xenon microprocessor. does anyone know what kind of video card is in these? i thought it was some type of ati or nvidia?

Xenon is the software in the Xbox360. The video card is a purpose-built ATi chip. The CPU is a PowerPC-type IBM unit (3-core, I think).

Anyone here have a 360 and the Simpsons game? Twice, mine has said the save data is corrupted and both seem to have happened about a week after starting a new one.

I don't know if it's a console problem or a game problem. No other game has ever done this.

Nope, sorry... I haven't had the opportunity to try out that one yet. I'm having too much fun with GTA IV for the moment.

Bad sectors on the hard drive, perhaps?

Nope,

I read others are having the same exact problem with the same game on the 360 and PS2, but not the PS3. The developers ****ed up somewhere.

I was 97% complete when it tanked the first time and 80+ % the second time.

If it is shipped with a box of dispossable ear plugs, I'll think about buying this old crap.

Agreed. With the possible exception of the Wii; the current console crop are far too loud to put up with in your living room. You think they'd spend the extra $5-10 and put in some decent cooling hardware.

Nobody's making fun of Danno. I think you missed the point buddy. Pit made a "joke" comment. Danno didn't know Pit was joking and replied to it. Thats the funny part. I understand that there is supposed to be a bond between you people but relax man. Don't get all mad about it. Would you feel better if I apologize for the misunderstanding?

Wow you XBrick 360°F boys need to lighten up.

When did you have a change of heart on the Blu-ray capabilities of the PS3? For the entire duration of the Blu-ray / HD DVD "war", you stated on numerous occasions that the PS3 was the worst Blu-ray player on the market... sucked out loud, I believe it was. :)

My PS3 sat dormant for months on end because the black levels sucked so bad compared to the Toshiba HD-A2. I refused to do any of the updates as none of them addressed the problem and some created more problems.

When the released profile update 2.2 with BD-J, I did my first update and the difference was staggering. About a week later, they released 2.3, which added DTS-HD and DTS-MA, so I updated again for the uncompressed audio.

Now, as I compare it to the A2, it's no contest. Even the PS3's upscaling is better, it just took a long time for them to get it right.

I realized anyone with a stand alone is basically screwed until they release full 2.0 players with everything they added to the PS3. The clincher was my freind Dave who always said the PS3 was junk and bought a top-of-line Denon. After wrestling with trying to get uncompressed audio to work properly and getting his Runco plasma to sync, Denon told time "stay away from the HDMI on this player, it still has some bugs".

So he's using component out for video and six channel analog RCA direct to his Suite 16. He called and basically told me the PS3 is the only player that fully works over HDMI and with the black level fix, the Denon didn't look as good for close to $2000.

It would make sense Sony is giving the PS3 all the best features, anyone who buys on for just BD will eventually buy games too and vice versa.

I can admit I was wrong (eventually) but at the time the PS3 was pretty sad for what it cost.

For the longest time, I've been holding out for the Panasonic DMP-BD50. It's partly because of the support for all of the optional audio formats, but mainly for the analog audio outputs as well, as my Pioneer receiver was purchased about 4 months before HDMI became fairly commonplace (and I prefer analog audio decoded at the source anyway, depending on the player).

I may actually consider a PS3 now. Thank you very much for that.

By the way, if you own a 360 with Live. You will notice a huge difference with PSN.

It's nowhere near the same league and a lot of PS3 servers have trouble getting all the microphones to sync. This is why Live costs $50 a year whereas PSN is free.

Getting signed in to PSN sometimes takes minutes whereas with Live, you are signed in before the blade menu appears in most cases.

This where the difference between the consoles is huge. Anyone who is familiar with both will tell you.

Were you not around for the carnage last week? Dingo does have a PS3 with GTA4. He and I both posted pics with love notes to each other because Halo pulled some kind of puppet master Jedi mind control trick on us.

Yeah, I've never had any issues getting signed in to Live, and I rarely experience any gameplay issues. If I do have online gameplay issues, it's directly related to excessive bandwidth usage elsewhere in my home (still too lazy to properly configure QoS on my router).

I've never been even vaguely interested with the PS3 as far as gaming goes. The 360 has been satisfying all of my console needs so far. Blu-ray is the main reason I'm even considering it at this point... and that's more than I've been willing to consider up to now.

Armor and Sword, by the way... though I'm not on much these days. I'm still very much involved with Guild Wars on the PC. :)

Plus, my job requirements have changed keeping me out of the shop all day, being denied the luxury of sitting down in front of a computer whenever I feel like it.

...or, it could be that I simply have had nothing of value to contribute for a while (whether or not I ever did is a different issue altogether). :)
