80GB PS3 Less Backward Compatible

By the Betanews Staff | Published July 10, 2007, 2:03 PM

The chip in Sony's initial PS3 versions that enables backward compatibility with older PlayStation games, called the "Emotion Engine," will be eliminated from the structure of new 80GB units, which go on sale in August. Sony warns that this means the 80GB PS3 will offer less compatibility.

Similar to Microsoft's Xbox 360, and Sony's own PAL-formatted systems in Europe, backward compatibility will likely be achieved through a periodic system update. The 60GB PS3 model continues to include the chip in order for users to play their PS One and PlayStation 2 games.

It's amazing how many fellow d***heads complain about a $100 price cut of a game console. You can get $800 worth of s*** for $499.99 at Amazon. This includes the 60GB PS3, 6 movies, Bluetooth remote, no tax, and free shipping. The suckers are the ones not taking up this offer. The 80GB system has less features suckers.

True! I downloaded a video for it on Xbox Live on the 360.

Haze, I never heard of it. Since they lied about DMC4 I wouldn't doubt if it was still coming out for the 360 too.

But that's awsome that MGS4 is coming to the 360. There's no need for the over priced PMS3 anymore.

Funny I see some on the list that are coming to the 360 and others on the list come out as a launch title and were aweful.

LMAO! Do you try to make a fool out of yourself? DMC was in MS E3 press conference. Now your point was?

You can quote random percentages and large numbers in the thousands, which I'm sure you pulled out of your back side, but that's not the point here. SOFTWARE EMULATION WILL NEVER EVER BE AS GOOD AS HARDWARE BASED EMULATION, NO MATTER HOW MANY NUMBERS YOU QUOTE. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT SONY CHANGES TO THE HARDWARE ITSELF BY REMOVING THE HARDWARE EMULATION CHIP. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE IN THE CONSOLE BUSINESS.

Sorry about typing that in all caps, I'm sure it still won't get through. You're going to keep quoting numbers, posting links and ranting about how awesome software emulation works for you. Sony screwed their customers yet again, just to save a few bucks. Plain and simple. All your ranting and raving won't change this fact.

Sorry, MGS is a PS3 Exclusive... As is Haze, as is Unreal Tournement, As Is DMC, as is Gran Turismo, as is R&C TOD, as is Motorstorm2, as is Drakes Fortune, as is Killzone, as is Warhawk..

Oh dear...

Yet again you look like a fool. MGS is possible only a timed exclusive. Unreal Tournament is a VERY short timed exclusive. DMC is NOT an exclusive. It was even in MS E3 press conference. Oh dear...

I would go through and name all of MS exlusives, but gosh you know there are just too many to list. Unlike Sony's.

hey why don't you open your eyes and look at the list again. There are only 11 confirmed, but some of the games that don't say anything next to them are already out!

Virtua FIghter with online play, BioShock, Mass effect, Blue Dragon, Project Gothem Racing, Haze, Oh and did I mention Halo3 just to name a few.

You are such a troll like the PS3 is the only system to exclusives. Get over yourself already.

well if its the same as us in europe sony will state over 1000 working titles, but sony class any game that plays as working, its a big pile of crap as every game ive tried has looked dog awful, with jagged edges and tearing graphics or a total crash, the software emulation sucks and they say you have a ps2/1 use that instead.

this is what David Reeves said when the ps3 launched in Europe, and he has been true to his word as the backwards compatibility updates have been dwindling

"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3"

that one chip costs alot of money and they cut the price $100, you think it happens magically?

It's actually 2,700 titles.

1,070 PS1 titles and 1,700 PS2 titles..

Compared to 2 xbox titles, is that? Well, point well made there. You're truly on form today.

Really? I thought it was 24,973,000 titles. You have to make up bigger numbers. It just sounds better.

You know, the $100 bump on the price would have made the PS3 a little bit more attractive, but now they've taken a step in the complete opposite direction.

the 80 gig ver has the emotion engine(EE) removed so it actually costs less to make than the 60 gig now because there is only a $5 difference in the cost of the hard drives.

how long before the more expensive one (60 with hardware EE) gets removed like the 20 gig ps3 and a price drop to gain favour with the 80gig that is cheaper to produce than either of the previous two.

what a crappy relaunch sony are attempting, do they really thinke ppl are that stupid?
