Adobe introduced a beta version of "Soundbooth" on Thursday, intended for the average consumer who may not need the power and capabilities of its professional audio editing product, Audition. Eventually, the application will make its way into the Creative Suite product.

"Adobe Soundbooth is a completely new, highly intuitive audio creation and editing toolset designed to accelerate the integration of sound into video and Flash workflows," Adobe Dynamic Media vice president and general manager Jim Guerard said.

Soundbooth will allow users to fix and edit audio files using visual tools. Without training in sound production, users will be able to record, edit and create audio easily, the company said. The program is integrated with Flash and Premiere Pro to allow audio files to be used in those projects.

Audition will be marketed to professional environments going forward, such as broadcast radio. Soundbooth will replace Audition in Adobe Production Studio, it said. Additionally, due to demand, Soundbooth will be made available in both Macintosh and Windows versions.

A beta of Soundbooth for either operating system can be downloaded from the Adobe Labs Web site.

Am I to understand that it doesn't work if you have an AMD processor? I have WinXP Pro as OS. Never was able to even try it. Seems it's allergic to AMD.

Am I missing something or is this not a "Web Audio Editing Tool"?

All I see is a desktop application.

It's a program to create/edit audio for Web sites. It's not a Web-based application.

But the audio can be used for anything, correct?

Meh, oh well. Not a huge deal. I just thought the title of the article was a tad misleading.

Dang... now I sound like PC_Tool. Great.

I'm going to have to try this out. I really like Audition, so I hope that this is good too.

If you're used to Audition, this will be a very "lite" version...

Ummm... maybe not so intuitive in early beta, but it's a nice basic editor, and $0.

Just curious: How would you compare this tool to Audacity or are they even the same type of product?

Yes, the article is wrong -- it is not a web-based, but a simple editor for web work, et al.

Audacity is a better app for those who know what they're doing, and for chop and squish audio editing. This will be good for simple vamps, loops, simple creation, top n tail, etc. If you need a background track, this will be way better than Audacity. If you need to cut up an interview or work with lots of effects, well, we'll see what happens out of the beta.

Either way, both are $0. Those are the kinds of choices that'll make ya smile. =)
