Amp'd Mobile Shutting Down Tuesday
By the Betanews Staff | Published July 23, 2007, 11:28 AM
Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Amp'd Mobile told customers Sunday night that it could potentially shut off service at 12:01am Tuesday. No reasoning was given, although the company did say that it was in the process of discussing a potential buyout with "several parties." All ports and credits will be honored, although no customer service will be available after the potential shut off date.
Amp'd has set up a FAQ page to answer commonly asked questions about the suspension of service. Interestingly enough, the carrier's website showed little, if any evidence of an impending shutdown. Amp'd filed for bankruptcy back in June, however it said that it planned to continue operating at that time.
8/1 Update on Ampd...
I am already on a new carrier/number (got a iphone didnt want to bother with porting issues I have heard about) and decided to let my phone expire. So far its been on and still been recieving/making calls. anyone have done something similar? I don't know if this means my phone is leeching of verizon since I have no contract with them. Though read somewhere that verizon bought out ampd (rumor)?
update: Service cutt-off on 8/6. wondering if I will be billed for july now lol (tried to log-in to ampd billing nada...)

|Hahahaha. Amp'd seemed to be marketed towards a demographic who would not have been capable of affording to pay for its service. I do hope that they are bought out by a larger company who keeps it alive as an alternative 'teen' oriented plan. It's a cool idea, just not viable with the strength of the larger networks, their phone discounts, and their exclusive offers. Especially as this demographic would likely want AT&T so that they can have an iPhone.
