RSSApple Announces New iPod: Nano

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday surprised attendees at a special event in San Francisco by introducing a completely new addition to its popular iPod line that will replace the iPod mini. The wafer-thin iPod Nano sports a color screen and holds 1,000 songs in a form factor slimmer than a #2 pencil.
The iPod Nano is "an entirely new ground-up design," Jobs said. Smaller than even Motorola's RAZR phone, the Nano weighs in at just 1.5 ounces. The player is 62 percent smaller than the Mini and 80 percent smaller than the original iPod.
"iPod Nano is the biggest revolution since the original iPod," said Jobs in a statement. "iPod Nano is a full-featured iPod in an impossibly small size, and it's going to change the rules for the entire portable music market."
Like its larger brethren, the Nano includes a click wheel for navigating songs and uses a standard 30-pin dock connector for compatibility with existing iPod accessories. Songs can be transferred from iTunes using USB 2.0.
By using Flash memory like the Shuffle instead of the hard drive found in the iPod Mini, Nano boasts a battery life of 14 hours.
The iPod Nano comes in two sizes -- 4GB and 2GB -- and two colors: black and white. The 4GB Nano is priced at $249 USD with the 2GB model available for $199. Both versions are available now online and at Apple's retail outlets.
Accessories are also available for the Nano, including a $29 dock, $39 lanyard with built-in headphones, and armbands that run $29 each. Nano also has a protective rubber case, or Tubes as Apple calls them, which will be sold in boxes of five colors for $29.
I'm begining to be tired of the iPod. It's very beautifull and all, but everyone seems to have one. I hope there will be a real alternative one day.

|ok, here we go again, everyone talking about ipod, Apple, etc... I already got one, so although I do like the new nano, I won't buy a 2nd ipod, but I'm buying a new digital music system, and was hoping someone here would have some experience with the sonos by sonos (www.sonos.com) and the symphony by olive (www.olive.us), if you do, pls let me know!

I always hated the look of those players
They never fit into the Apple family
They were simply cheap looking
At least now that Samsung is on the Apple team nobody will even come out with a player to challenge this

|The metal casing has a purpose other then 'looking good'. Why can't people realise that what makes a good portable music player is the quality of the sound. What makes anything good (or bad) in music reproduction industry is the ability (or inability) to reproduce the sound as near to perfect as possable.
Other then that, it's the quality of the music! :P
The day I buy an audio player for its 'good looks' is the day I've lost interest in music. And that isn't happening...
As for the comment above; I really doubt it's going to break of f**king bend!

|Wow! This does look like a very good player. It's nice and clean, in typical iPod fashion and it should be a great player. The size and weight is certainly a nice feature, although it still doesn't feature any of the advanced features that other players have (ie. FM radio, recording, etc.).
However, the one thing I've never liked about the iPods is that they are not comfortable to hold in your hand. I like to hold my player in my hand or drop it in my pocket. I've been using a Nike-Philips PSA for the last few years (had a Rio one first, now a Philips) and their shape is fantastic! It's round shape makes it so comfortable to hold and use.
Me? I'm waiting for the new Philips PSA612 4GB mini drive to come out sometime this month (Nike is no longer on board) for $199. It includes the arm band (optional on iPod Nano), stopwatch that talks to you, FM radio, and hard-drive shock protection.

|Bought mine Wednesday nite. Apple has finally made a credit card sized player that carries 1000 songs that I can carry anywhere.
As I read on another site: Why would anyone need more than 1000 songs to listen to?! I can go biking, work out, etc. portably. Apple *finally* got me!
