Apple Exceeds Expectations, Mac Sales Soar
By Ed Oswald | Published October 22, 2007, 5:00 PM
Little was surprising about Apple's quarterly numbers surrounding the iPhone, as sales met expectations and forecasts. However, Mac sales surged to record levels and the company posted far better revenue numbers than expected.
The company, known to be conservative in its forecasts, had forecasted $5.7 billion in revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter. On Monday, Apple ended up posting $6.22 billion in revenue, on profits of $904 million, or about $1.01 per share.
Analysts surveyed by Reuters had expected the company to post profits of $6.02 billion or 84 cents per share.
iPhone sales of 1.12 million were in line with earlier estimates, bringing total sales to 1.39 million.
Details of how many of those phones were actually activated by AT&T should become available in the coming days as the carrier releases its own quarterly numbers. Those details are expected on Tuesday.
The bigger story, however, seems to be Apple's continuing strength in its Macintosh computer business. Sales for the quarter were 2,164,000 -- up 34 percent -- representing a new quarterly record by more than 400,000 units.
iPods showed some year-over-year growth at 10.2 million units, up 17 percent from last year. Looking ahead to the fiscal first quarter of 2008, Apple forecasts revenue of about $9.2 billion on earnings per share of about $1.42.
apple is doing well but it can do much better. i will not purchase OS 10 until I can install it on my present machine and dual boot it. steve jobs just never learns. I believe apple could go from 3% to 10% market share instantly if they start selling operating system alone. I am sure google will be releasing a new operating system within the next three years. I believe it will change the operating system industry as well.

Of course, that would only last until people realized that it only works on 10% of current hardware...

|Also - going from 10 units sold to 17 units sold is about a 67% increase. So while the percent increase "sounds" like a huge amount. When you start from low and go to higher, it can be a big difference. Turning $1 into $2 is a 100% increase.
I'm personally glad that Apple is doing better with the MAC. It will force MS to be even more innovative and that's good for everyone. When there is no competition - you get stagnation.

|Hey, you can buy an iMac right now, install Boot Camp on it and dual boot right into Windows XP/Vista and/or OS X. It works very, very well indeed.
So, invest once in the new hardware and you can run both OS's just fine.

|I have a 24" iMac and it has an Intel Core 2 Duo and now 2 gig of memory.
I got it because you could run either Windows OR OS X on that bad boy via Boot Camp.
While not perfect, Boot Camp is pretty functional, though the 7300 GT 128 meg is a limiting factor if you dig gaming.
I find now I spend more time using my iMac in Windows mode than in OS X. It's what I'm used to, and it works fine as a backup machine.
I use Parallels in OS X to play around with Linux distros in the Virtual Machine environment, and that works well.
So, even though the thing is mega expensive and a pain to upgrade / modify, at least I'm getting some good use out of it.
That said, would I buy another Macintosh product again? I really don't think I would. They are too proprietary and too expensive for what you get.
I'll stick with Windows XP for now - at least as long as it is well supported. But if I'm ever forced to go to Vista, maybe I'll give Apple another look.

|Mac sales soared because they finally entered the 21st century. Before Apple came out with the 1 inch titanium Powerbook laptop and the new iMacs, Apple had the ugliest computers around. Remember the iLamp and the funny shape and colored laptops! Those friggin things were hideous. And not only that they were slow as hell. If Apple didn't persist for years on that slow piece of $h!t G processor. They could have had a much bigger market share. But the main reason sales have soared: Intel Inside

Doesn't sound like it's working out of the box to me, there mate. You wouldn't be lying...again?
Odd, that only PC_Tool has problems with Ubuntu.
Check the forums, mate. Plenty of folks having trouble with it. Also, I never said I had problems with it. Check the post. I said it didn't work out of the box. I had no trouble getting it working.
Try being relevant to the thread instead of putting words in people's mouths.
Yeah, i bet he/she really did install it.
Do you seriously want the screenshots? Hell, I have 8 (of the 10) CD's left in my drawer here from 6.06 release that no-one ever wanted... (Had them sitting on the receptionists desk next to a laptop running it pointed tot he ubuntu homepage). Only one of them managed to walk out the door (I used the other). After that, I stopped having the CDs sent and just downloaded. I suppose I could use them as coasters now...
Unlike you, I actually do try it before bashing it. :)
Back to your false original assertion: Vista supports more current hardware, functionality, and software out of the box than Ubuntu does. Now, if you'd said Ubuntu supports more of the hardware currently in use than Vista, I might have actually agreed with you. :) Pick yer words a little better, mate.
