Apple Improves the iPhone Ahead of Release
By Ed Oswald | Published June 18, 2007, 2:58 PM
Apple said Monday that the estimated battery life of the iPhone will be about two hours longer than initially anticipated, along with its plastic face being upgraded to optical-quality glass.
Battery life is a common complaint when it comes to smartphones, and often heavy users of the devices need to carry a second battery to make it through a complete day's work. With the upgrade, its phone supports eight hours of talk time, and six hours worth of data, Apple said.
In addition, the device can remain on standby for as long as 250 hours, nearly 11 days, and play about 7 hours worth of video or 24 hours of music.
The glass display also makes the device much more resistant to scratching and more suitable for video viewing than its iPod counterpart. That device uses plastic for the screen, and has been criticized in the past for its susceptibility to scratches.
"There has never been a phone like iPhone, and we can't wait to get this truly magical product into the hands of customers starting just 11 days from today," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a statement.
Consumers can't seem to wait either. Buzz surrounding the device has been significant, and some analysts say that AT&T stands to gain as many as one million customers just due to the iPhone alone.
Its release also has other phone manufacturers rushing to match it in features: for example, HTC plans to release the Touch in markets across Europe, Asia, and North America over the next few months.
"Both of these items are important as there's been a lot of speculation over the last few days about both of these features," JupiterResearch analyst Michael Gartenberg said. "It was a good move for Apple to get in front of them."
What, did they lower the price tag? That would be the nicest benefit they could come up with. Laim scripted news from Apple that gets the iPhone back into the wrip-and-print news.

|I don't think people realize that they have to pay the iphone in full you don't get reduction. And you have to get locked in to a 2 years contract and still have to pay extra for a data plan. And if that's not enough there's no 3G and the damn thing is locked. I can't see myself paying $600 for a phone and I can't use it anywhere else. Usually with a 2 year contract you get a free phone and in some cases a second phone for 10 bucks or so extra.

|There's not a chance AT&T gains one million customers. Anyone on an EVDO network is unlikely to switch to EDGE, so that leaves a much smaller pool of potential customers from which AT&T can poach.

A fool is easily parted from his money so there's no point trying to use logic to rationalise with those folks hellbent on buying one ASAP just because they've been sucked into the hype.
The fact that it costs 3 times as much as most phones and has half the features seems to be lost on the "oooh... shiny" crowd.

|No it doesn't MMS and e-mail are two totally different things. MMS is like SMS with multimedia content. And that's just another example of how Apple manipulates the consumers and lie to their gullible customers.
And another thing that a $600 phone should have is a user replaceable battery. And it's no secrete that Apples batteries are below average. And the iphone uses the same battery technology as the ipod. Just wait 6 months before the complaints and the law suits start pouring in.

|They're both picture messaging. They're just two different ways of doing it. T-mobile's Sidekick 3 phone sends pictures the exact same way as the iPhone. I'm sure these two smartphones are not the only ones that require you to type an e-mail address instead of just a phone number.

|The problem with that theory though is the iPhone isn't MMS compatible (accourding to the other posts). Plus the iPhone is closed source so you won't be able to add any software or games to it. Apples reasoning for that is they think that if they allow you to add programs, it may make the iPhone unreliable.
