Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.4.5

As Microsoft heralded the arrival of February's Patch Tuesday, Apple had its own Valentine's Day present for loyal users: the fifth update for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. The release tackles a number of minor issues in the operating system, including bugs in Safari and networking, along with a slew of Intel-related fixes.

With the first Intel iMacs already in customers' hands and Apple's MacBook Pro shipping this week, Apple has used Mac OS X 10.4.5 to correct small problems across a variety of applications, including Dashboard, QuickTime, Front Row, and with streaming media. All Mac OS X users can upgrade to the new version through the system's built-in Software Update mechanism.

It's the next generation Operating systems on the roll now .... Mac OS X Tiger is an excellent OS ...... though most people use Windows OS currently on thier PC 's more and more are turning towards Mac OS ... the reason is they are more professional in their approach to build their own Operating system for theMacintosh computers they make unlike Sony , Dell , HP and many others who rely on Windows OS which has many flaws ... Macintosh computers use their own security chips and design which helps the Mac OS X Tiger's capability enormously ...... I use both Windows and Mac at home and enjoy using the Mac all the time .......the future battles of the Next generation Operating systems is already here with Windows Vista / Mac OS X Tiger / Fedora Core 4 Linux / Mandriva Linux / Xandros Linux / TurboLinux ..... enjoy the fun !!!!!!

Here's the way I look at it. It doesn't matter if you use Windows, Mac, or one of the countless nix based OS. As long as any one of them is made by humans it's gonna be flawed.

All modern Operating systems in wide use recieve frequent updates. This is normal and should in no way be used by any individual as a basis upon which to lay claim that one OS is better or worse than another.

Doing so only belies ones own biased attitudes and narrow-minded thinking.

That said, please tell me you are joking, right?

No way! OSX is a piece of artwork! Some(like me) feel that artwork gets in the way of productivity, but others think it's bliss. OSX *may* be updated more regularly than XP, though. Depends how you use "bad".

for what i remember up to this date, OSX still struggles to open up a second application when editing video or images ....

Can't deny quality. A properly setup Windows may be more secure, but a default-configuration Windows is laughable.

Recently my Uncle's mac caught a virus(or so it seems). It disabled his USB ports and prevented standard OSX programs from starting or running properly. He rebooted, and it was purged from his system.

It may not be perfect, but you can't deny that's not a neat design. :D

I believe what he was trying to stress with the word "more" was that our updates tend to come in service pack style updates, in which instead of addressing individual security updates with single patches, we get a large update file with multiple security patches combined, as well as other enhancements/updates to programs that osx bundles. For instance, I can't truly remember the last time that Microsoft "added features" to one of their product through software updates (other than SP2).

And before I get flamed and deemed a fanboy, I use both OS's about equally, and develop for Windows as my profession. But as soon as that clock strikes 5, i'm right back on OSX enjoying my experience instead of wondering which batch of patches I'll have to worry about next.

Then it truely comes down to preference. Personally, I'd rather get security fixes weekly and major updates infrequently.

It seems safer than waiting for security updates that are needed now until the next major update.

Maybe that's just me. ;)

not to mention that a good number of OSX users arent even aware of what the updates are for ...
they just read and update ... read and update ... same goes for a big mayority of WIN users ...
the problem with this patches is that they adress a problem that has already spread and affected a lot of people ....
look at linux ... it has more flaws than darn windows ... :P ....
the difference is that linux users are more savvy and to fix an issue they dont need an OS update ... they fix the problems themselves

Point well taken, the only other major factor when comparing the two update methods would be the nature of the updates themselves. One reason I do not mind waiting a little longer for an osx update as opposed to windows, is because of what the patches themselves usually entail. For instance, I notice with most windows updates, it usually some sort of TCP/IP overflow taht allows DOS attacks, or a critical Media player problem that allows arbitrary code execution (after these problems have usually been identified by third party firms.) With osx, I feel like the updates are more proactive, and much less severe, as they are usually optimizations, like enhancing safari's rendering capabilities. I may be slightly biased though, as I haven't heard of a serious security issue with OSX since I've been using mac's, so patches mean much less to me now than they use to with windows.

We're getting OSX updates as often as XP gets patch tuesday updates. Apple markets these better though. They don't claim they are security updates like MS, but "enhancements" to safari and networking. Same thing.

I'm just asking because I'd hate to call someone with a disability a complete f'ing moron.

Take a course in writing...or journalism...or better yet, just don't comment on things you have no clue about.

You see, They are both operating systems. They are both releasing updates to these operating systems on the *same* day. It happens to be a holiday. They realize some people actually use *both* operating systems.

The list goes on.

Aside from the segue aspect alone (plainly obvious to all but you, apparently), they are closely related enough to bear mention in any related article.

Actually, I have a BA degree in Journalism and have worked in the business for 20 years. So it's very easy to spot untrained tech/journal/bloggers parading as journalists just about everywhere one looks on tech pages like this.

What the heck ever happened to just reporting news without adding editorial slant and comment? Makes me believe some of you think trash like The Register and other similar oraganizations are news publications or something other than tech tabloids.

If you can't see the slant you are not looking very hard.

Referencing a fellow operating system manufacturer also releasing OS updates on the same day is not "slant" (or even negative for that matter), it's called context -- something they should have taught you on the road to your BA. You seem to have instead picked up the finer points of flaming and bitterness. I recommend you go outside and get some fresh air and sunlight.
