Apple Sells 100 Millionth iPod

Outpacing even Sony's once-ubiquitous Walkman, Apple announced Monday it had sold 100 million iPods, making the device the fastest selling music player in history. The milestone was hit in just five and a half years, with the original 5GB iPod introduced in November 2001.

Apple has released 10 new iPod models since that time, including the iPod mini, iPod nano and iPod shuffle. Over 4,000 accessories are available for the player, and over 70 percent of car manufacturers offer iPod support. "iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that," remarked Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple's first version of the iPod was terrfic!

--->what's funny about the zune is its the FIRST generation of the player and was IMMEDIATELY put down. Microsoft is doing what everyone else does when they enter this market.

And I only know about 2 people who DON'T have an iPod. So what are we supposed to infer about Apple's marketshare from either your perspective or mine?

The iPod is okay, but I'm not a big fan of Apple. I'm getting a bit tired of constantly hearing about some new iPod thing coming out. Enough is enough, it's just a music player after all. I really dislike iPod/Apple fanboys though. They're just as bad as Sony fanboys. Their attitude is "If it ain't an iPod, it's crap!"

Another thing I don't get is how Apple supposedly has over 70% of the music player market. I only know 2 people who have an iPod, and both of them have other players as well. Everyone else I know has music players, but they're not iPods. A few people at work have video iPods, but again, the majority have players from other companies. When I go jogging or roller blading, it's a crowded place with hundreds of people, and they all have headphones on and carry an MP3 player. Guess what? Most of them are not carrying an iPod. So I just want to know where this 70%+ iPod dominance comes from.

I think the folks that sell accessories are making more $$$ in profit than the ipod profits (which is usually the case). I have seen people with specialized cases for their IPOD, multiple colors etc. I mean come on its a freaking music player, you drop it and its dead no matter what or how expensive the case is.

CarLox,

Don't get so exited. This stuff isn't that important. I have an 80GB iPod and a Sansa C250, I prefer the Sansa. It sounds better and weighs a tenth as much.

I'd probably try a Zune too but it's the weight issue that makes me dislike it and the iPod. In the end, I use my Blackjack more than anything for music playback as I have to have it on me at all times.

Dont go crazy, let people think they are important when they really arent.

Yeah, instead of posting about iPods or Zunes (in a topic about iPods, no less), we should go on pointless, nonsensical rants of unbridled idiocy...

Thats roughly in in 3 Americans. By the way, a status symbol is not a $349 MP3 player. Anyone with a decent job can offord one. Or those faggot Dolce and Gabanna glasses that everyone has to have because Fergie wears them.

A real status symbol is a Bentley Continental GTC or a Gallardo. You know, those things that you need to make a few hundred thousand a year to afford.

Not Really,

Most Americans who make 50-60,000 a year can afford a 25K car. The Bentley is only eight times as much and the Gallardo is 160K

I'd say a 400K salary could swing a GTC.

Microsoft ruined the Zune with horrible marketing, though being hated didn't help much either. I mean "squirting music"? WTF were they thinking?

what's funny about the zune is its the FIRST generation of the player and was IMMEDIATELY put down.

Microsoft is doing what everyone else does when they enter this market...test the waters, give one thing different but it was poorly executed, Microsoft could rebound by making the device playsforsure compatible and fixing the issue with wireless, because the player itself is great albeit clunky but sound is better and picture is better and the interface makes more sense.

Apple doesn't always have original ideas again look at appletv, ipod, two button mouse, everyone in business watches the competition and tries to improve where they failed or to make it a stronger product.

Apple doesn't always make gold (appletv for example is a very short sighted product and there are many products out there that do it much better)

People seem to think ipod came before everyone and it didn't and it didn't sell anything until it was released for windows (take that apple fanboys)

Apple was just better at marketing, you dont see sansa commercials or zen or any other tv commericals except ipod.

The Zune has a feature where it can transfer songs to a friends Zune wirelessly. Microsoft had the brilliant marketing idea of calling this feature "Squirting".
