Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.4 update with new security fixes

By Scott M. Fulton, III, BetaNews

June 30, 2008, 6:23 PM

In a notice on its corporate Web site today, Apple said it had released a wrap-up of general operating system stability and security improvements, including several that address malicious crafting exploits.

One new security update released today and incorporated into the version 10.5.4 package addresses a series of problems uncovered by, and attributed to, UK-based software developer and consultant James Urquhart, who himself does not claim to be a security engineer. A recent Secunia software advisory also credits Urquhart, who was also able to locate a problem with versions of Safari for Windows prior to version 3.1.2 (obviously not addressed by today's Mac OS X update).

Reports from as early as January 2006 reveal that Mac OS X has suffered from problems dealing with maliciously encoded GIF files. If a GIF image file can be crafted so that the image contents overwrite where the interpreter is expecting the image to terminate, an error condition can be triggered. And apparently in the revelation or disclosure of that error, information is divulged which lets an exploiter read the contents of the remote client system's memory.

Another problem with the handling of JavaScript arrays, which would normally be expected to terminate code execution, can lead to arbitrary code being executed instead. This latest operating system update addresses both of these issues.

Users who have already gotten an early glimpse of the terms of service for Apple's MobileMe -- announced earlier this month as the replacement for .Mac -- noted that the new service only supports OS X versions 10.4.11 (the last in that old series) or 10.5.4 and later. MobileMe is expected to be released July 11, which is why Mac users have been expecting 10.5.4 -- the newest system on which it depends -- to be released somewhat sooner.

Whether you are talking about Ms or Apple ther is nothing wrong with issuing updates. One would expect, since no OS is perfect, updates are needed and Apple or Linux are no different. The only problem I have is the following:
" Reports from as early as January 2006 reveal that Mac OS X has suffered from problems dealing with maliciously encoded GIF files. Being a 23 year PC veteran, I'm starting to look into Mac as an alternative because Microsoft has made the same mistake with Vista that they did with Windows ME: a so-so operating system with lots of bells and whistles nobody wanted, and (at launch) lots of problems. And by forcing people to adopt it when everybody was fairly happy with XP, they're not making friends.

I am starting to experiment with OS X and so far I like it. Takes a bit of getting used to, I admit but it's not that bad.

The "war" between fanboys of each side is ridiculous. It's a matter of personal taste and opinion. You don't like something? fine. No need to start bashing the other "side". The internet and everybody's rude opinions behind a keyboard are becoming the downfall of manners and respect towards others... (this last part is not directed at the person I replied to ;) )

You make a good point!

The main advantage of the Mac, at this point, is that it allows you the choice to run BOTH OSX and Windows as YOU decide.

I would love to see Apple release an unsupported OSX for PC - they would capture market share and afford an opportunity for others to run an alternative to Windows while increasing the total apps available (sorry Linux boys...yup, they can run Linux if they want to operate a bulletproof print server! The robust baby UNIX without apps...yeah, yeah, we know, OpenOffice et. al. ...) In fact, I suspect releasing OSX for PC would render it an effective Linux killer for the desktop.

But anyone intimate with one OS or the other...spending an hour on the other platform is NOT a valid trial! All you will do is discover that the other platform does not do things in the same way as you are familiar! It will take a while for Windows fans to unlearn allot of what they are used to - and for OSX fans, Windows will seem the most inefficient use of time and effort imaginable. So give yourself adequate time to adapt to which ever platform you choose to use.

But in the end, additional choice of environments and native compatibilities and options are good. And to that end, as currently available, this makes the Mac the optimal choice.

But hey, use what satisfies your needs.

Even if they never give in to allowing semi-unrestricted installs of OS X on supported hardware other than Apple's own, I'd be happy if they at least released a Windows port of Boot Camp (or equivalent) and supported an approved VM of their choosing and/or design.

Alas, they would never do anything that cannibalized their hardware sales... but I can dream. :)

It's not just a financial issue, not releasing OSX to PCs.... One of the reasons it's so "stable" is that it doesn't have to support thousands of different types of hardware. They make it to work with a set number of devices and that's it. If they opened it like Windows, it would surely have the same issues with drivers as Vista had upon release for example.

The Apple hardware and OS is both compliant and conformant to the latest Intel Roadmap.

So if your whizbang left-field nonsense is also conformant, there is no problem. If its not, who give a F#$%?

And who wants Boot Camp for a PC? VMWare Fusion already kicks the PC version's posterior. And with VMWare Workstation a few have already played with hacks to bypass the TCM authentication. Its only the typical Steve Jobs' control fetish that prevents them moving forward.

Are you mildly retarted?? This says nothing about Windows being superior to OS X in it's current state. It says that the next version of Windows has the opportunity (and has already had many of them) to be rewritten and succeed in areas that OS X may not be strong at.

"A MONOLITHIC operating system like Windows perpetuates an obsolete design." - I agree, anyone else?

"Some software engineers within Microsoft seem to be in full agreement, talking in public of work that began in 2003 to design a new operating system from scratch. They believe that problems like security vulnerabilities and system crashes can be fixed only by abandoning system design orthodoxy, formed in the 1960s and ’70s, that was built into Windows." - who cannot agree with this? I love OS X compared to OS 9, which was good in it's days but had many flaws. They started off fresh, had a few bumps but most people were able to run their old apps until they were ported to the new version.

As you cannot read nor comprehend a sentence - Sales are up because bootcamp came out for Leopard and MS screwed up Vista. It has nothing to do with Leopard being a superior OS, they mucked up more things on Leopard then they have with any of their previous updates, hell its been out for about 7 months and there is already 4 different updates for it.

Snow Leopard will be concentrating on optimizing Leopard's code and removing the bloat.

So I know its going to be difficult but even mac fanboys would be ashamed you are using their pc as you take the old mantra of the Apple computer and show that only Morons tend to use it because its idiot proof...

"ROFL! ^__^ What a phenomenal misinformed sense of humor you have. Your sheer stupidity almost impresses me. "

I strongly suggest you READ what YOU post on THIS site. You are nothing but a pathetic little troll. Your not a apple fan, I doubt you have even touched one. Time after time you make yourself look stupid (for those interested refer to any previous apple/microsoft article).
You NEVER respond when someone throws REAL facts in your face.
You DON'T READ your OWN links half the time - just makes you look even more stupid.

And for your information, MANY APPLE FANS (can you read that?) were disappointed when Leopard came out - many even STILL today. Just proves even more you don't know what you are talking about.
Why dont you start going back and backing up your bulls***? You obviously cant because you NEVER EVER DO, its always a quick insult and off to start a new flamewar.

And BN: Why do you allow this kid to keep posting when it obviously seriously derails the articles. You've banned people in the past for less.

He, he, he. The reason daddy is still hear is because I add a tremendous amount of value to BetaNews. I could rightfully charge for all this education on all things Apple that I spoon feed to you deprived Windoze users each day... but from the kindness of my heart I give away all of this education for free. :)

(Sorry guys, my turn to feed the troll :-)

So far, I haven't seen any value added to BN from Internetworld-my-age-is-7, but I might pay to get rid of trolls like him. Anyone who likes to continually use old grade school spellings of things like "windoze" and using sexual slurs is just showing their age.

Oh, and I'm not usually the grammar police, but learn how to proofread your posts. I don't know if you use spellcheck (probably not) but it doesn't catch everything. It's here, not hear.

Do us all a favor.

Bear with me, I'll talk slooow.

Close the lid. Yes, the one on your "mac".

The "mac" is the computer that you installed the blue looking OS from bittorrent on.

Pick it up with two hands, be sure to place one on each side of the "mac"

Throw it up in the air, really really high.

Stand under it as it falls.

Wait for it ..

Wait for it ..

Wait for it ..

ok, when you hear the big thud sound, CATCH!!!

I guarantee there will be no real rebuttal he'll skirt the issue altogether and make up what he imagined I typed in his brainwashed mind.
