Best Buy and Fry's drop 80GB PS3 from online stores

By Tim Conneally | Published January 25, 2008, 6:24 PM

What began as an allegedly leaked internal memo from Best Buy, announcing that the 80GB PlayStation 3 was to be removed from store shelves on January 28, appears to be coming true without official word from either Best Buy or Sony.

Both companies were difficult to reach today, in the wake of the Tuesday news leak to PS3 Fanboy concerning Best Buy's discontinuation of the 80GB PlayStation 3.

However, as of this evening on Best Buy's site, the only PS3 available is item #8588584, the 40GB unit, which lacks PS2 compatibility.

Popular electronics retailer Fry's has also apparently discontinued sales of the 80GB model. (UPDATE: The 80GB Playstation 3 has returned to Fry's site as of Saturday 1/26.)

Other retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Circuit City, and Target are currently still carrying the 80GB version, but it's unclear if they will receive new inventory.

Sony has thus far refused to comment about the memo, only stating that it is currently working with two SKUs in North America, but with the 80GB PS3 disappearing from online stores, it's only a matter of time before something must be said publicly.

Obviously the idiots here can't see it. The 80GB is disappearing, but a new model WILL make an appearance to replace it.

It will have Dualshock 3, it will in all likelihood have the same features as the current 80GB (4xUSB ports, SACD, Card readers and PS2 software based compatibility), and will likely have a 120GB+ HDD, and sell for a premium price (guess: $449, with the 40GB going down to $349).

Obviously announcing to BEFORE it's sold all of it's 80GB is a stupid move. You wait till stocks of current units are exhausted and THEN you announce the new model.

It's obvious none of you lot own your own businesses, as it's ABC of business...

Well I mean it'd be something completely different and they would have had to totally explain themselves if they had discontinued the entire line and just said, "To hell with Sony, we hate you", and then pulled every single player off the market, but they didn't do that at all. I will give you the fact that the ps3 has a nice blu ray player, but that is about it. Without the easy backwards compatibility, it has almost no games. Yes, the 360 came out a year sooner, but the ps3 has been out for over a year now and still has little to no games. At the one year mark for the 360, they had double the games the ps3 did and many exclusive games that people actually wanted to play.

The 360 has the best online service (even if it was down for 3 weeks), where is the ps3's downloadable movies, or tv shows. so you can watch you tube on the ps3 woopty doo, I can watch it on my phone, who cares.

Uncharted was pretty good. COD4 is multiplatform. Haven't played the new GT, but I didn't ever like the old ones. Warhawk was somewhat enjoyable, but you can't ignore the lack of singleplayer there. The big difference being is the fact that Sony constantly touted FULL hardware based backwards compatibility. They tried to use it as a selling point and kept pointing out that the Xbox360 will only have an INFERIOR software based emulator for backwards compatibility. Then later, in typical Sony fashion, they went back on their word and removed the hardware EE chip just to save a lousy $22. Sony even went on record saying they're going to concentrate on next generation games, rather than worry about backwards compatibility of last generation games. This after blowing a lot of hot air up everyone's a** about the PS3's backwards compatibility being so superior. Why was it such a huge deal to have hardware b/c back then, but now it's no big deal? and to talk about ragging on someone and then doing the same thing....how about when MS says....

nobody needs HDMI....nobody has TV's with HDMI....then what do they do? release the elite with an HDMI port (of course its a gimped HDMI that can only pass 2 channel uncompressed audio, while the PS3 can do 7.1 channel uncompressed HD audio)...

nobody needs high def movies....so then MS releases an HD-DVD add-on....hmm....

nobody NEEDS large HDD's in their system....so MS releases a console with a 120GB HDD...and they release a system that needs to use THEIR HDD....while Sony is consumer friendly and allows the use of ANY 2.5" SATA drive, and it doesn't void your warranty...

I'm a big fan of a lot of newer games, but mostly on the PC... I just still have a soft spot for the classics that I grew up on, and those consoles will not last forever.

The performance and accuracy of PS2 emulation on the PC has generally left a lot to be desired. To date, the PS3 was the only system that came the closest to being the original hardware than anything else has. They had a good thing going and then some (upscaling the graphics)... and ruined it. MS didn't say that you don't need HDMI; nor did they say that nobody had HDMI. What they said was that you don't need HDMI for high def....and they were right. For some reason people think that there is some huge visual difference between 1080i and 1080p. The truth is, there's not. For the average consumer, the tech advantage is only on paper.

At the time of the 360s release, HD tvs still had a fairly low penetration rate, and even then many didn't have HDMI inputs (my first HD was a 27" CRT without HDMI). MS decided that since it wasn't necessary to have HDMI for high def, and it's (at the time) low penetration, they would save a few bucks and not included it. When consumers started demanding it, they produced a console that had it.

On to the HDD issue. Once again, a 20gb hd was more than sufficient at the time of the 360s launch...the video store hadn't even been implemented yet. When it was, and it took off, MS made a larger HDD available. Complaining that it's a proprietary drive is kind of silly; considering each and every console has had proprietary hardware/software...it's the nature of the business.

To Sony's credit, they did the public a huge service by bucking the trend, and allowing the end user to swap out the HDD if they had a reason to. Don't call them consumer friendly, though; they're motivation to do this probably included the fact that people would have found a way to do this anyway (they did it with both the original Xbox and the 360). It gives them a certain amount of control over the console, while taking something away from the mod/homebrew scene.

Sony creating a console with a lot of potential that (even a year + later) they've only marginally delivered on...and in most cases, it's on the BR, not the gaming, side.

The 360's hardware issues go much deeper than just the cooling (primarily the DVD drives themselves), and they refuse to acknowledge them.

Nintendo didn't look far enough ahead, and didn't include any sort of HD output for their console. (Yeah, you can use component cables, but it's still only 480p)

They all have their strengths as well, though.

FYI:
-It's not that much to buy a PS2 and it uses much less power.

-In fact, the 40GB PS3 uses about 2/3rds the power of the previous models (about 120Watts) after removing some chips and using some newer lower-power ones. It's also significantly quieter because of the reduced power (it was already quieter than the XBOX 360) so that's awesome especially as a BluRay player.

While 40GB is not a lot of space, at least you don't void your Warranty adding your own drive and they'll continue to drop.

The only thing that baffles me is dropping the software Backwards Compatibility. Since they already developed it for many games, there is ZERO cost to give it to the 40GB version. Or is there? I guess the PS2 is still selling well... at any rate, the 40GB PS3 was what Sony needed to do and the power/fan/price make it the logical choice in my mind, though I'd be dropping $120 pretty quick for a 160GB drive (eSATA would have been a really nice touch so we could use a 3.5" drive).

I'm still with my PC (new HD 3870 ATI), however if the Sony PS4 comes with the features I hope in a few years I might drop the PC (and Windows).

OT (slightly): Let me start out by saying that I have not been very interested in the PS3 at all. I have stuck by my 360 since the first day it came out and will continue to stand by it...

Now, with that said; My wife got me the 40GB PS3 for my birthday this week. I have got to say that I am was wrong about the PS3 entirely. While the selection of games is average (at best, compared to the 360), the other features built into the unit simply blew my mind.

As photonboy said (in not so many words) is that the HD is upgradeable without voiding your warranty... I just ordered a Seagate 140GB SATAII drive for it. :-)

Other features like bluetooth, built-in WiFi AND the ability to install Linux without voiding the warranty? All I can say is that there are about 50 more things I can do with my PS3 than I can with the 360. It really shows how closed MSFT has been with the 360, which saddens me greatly.

Now, will I ditch the 360 in lieu of the PS3? Not likely, but I will say that in terms of movie watching and such, the PS3 is going to take center stage for a bit...

I agree, the PS3 is a great gaming system with very little good exclusives. I've had one since launch and I only use it as a BD player.

I have played Motor Storm and the graphics are fantastic but the action is slow paced for my tastes. I like fast moving out of control racing like Burnout Revenge. Paradise is a tad slower but is way more involved. The graphics and layout of the drive anywhere city is unbelievable. I was tempted to buy the PS3 version but I have a crap load of "freinds" on XBOX Live who I already race with on Burnout Revenge.

I think I have found a great way to get some use out of my PS3 after all. I just read someone ported the MAME emulator to work with it. I still need to do some reading but I would love to use the PS3 instead of a PC.

Another cool emulation program is SNemulDS, it allows you to play SNES games on your DS provided you have a Moonshell cartridge like the R4DS, which I read about here a couple of months ago.

The R4 card works great, if you have a DS, I highly recommend picking one up.

The only bad thing about installing Linux on the PS3 is the extremely limited partitioning options. You can either have 10GB available for the PS3 operating system or 10GB available for Linux. The Wii is simply crippled by it's Gamecube innards.

The 40GB PS3 does all the Playstation3 stuff that all the other PS3's do, the only things that have changed, is the perhiphial stuff like PS2 compat, HDD size, USB ports and card reader slots (the latter 3 can all be added without affecting your warranty).

What the idiots at Betanews and the fanbots here never understand, and has been proven many times before, is that there will likely be a 80GB replacement, but Sony are holding off announcing it, until stock os 80GB are depleted.

You can order one through Amazon for under $60, and they ship from NY state. I ordered a second one as the first was basically for my daughter and her pink DS. I find myself grabbing it all the time and getting into games as they are more engaging than any other handheld.

I'm buying a black onyx or silver one for myself as soon as the second R4 shows up. All you do is drag thier Moonshell program and drivers from a zip onto the MicroSD, make a few folder for music, games, and movies, then put your files in each folder.

It took about five minutes from out of the box, to playing games. If you get one, let me know and I'll give you a link to download a bunch of DS games.

For music, you can only use MP3 and not WMA and movies have to be in DPG format, but I found a free converter. Everything is upported like the WiFi games, rumble pack, etc...

The SNES emulator is very easy to set up and get games up and running too. Not every SNES game works correctly however but they fix them all the time with each new release.

Nintendo is trying to put a stop to all US sales but is not having very good luck, they will target Amazon next so get one while you can.

I also heard there will be some Wii / DS linkup in the future, I dont know exactly what that is but they say it's coming in 2008. Proably like the PSP / PS3 link.

A while ago, i ran the statistics on the xb360 and Ps3. Basically comparing their game averages while they were on the market both 1 year on.

The metrics didnt lie.

In the first year of the xb360 it had something like 70 plus games while the ps3 had nearly 80 games.

But the ps3 statistically had a better first year in games that the xb360. This was down to the fact that the PS3 was getting bad ports from the xb360, BUT, they were scoring higher than many of the games that were released in the first year of the xb360s life.

As mentioned, the xb360 first proper game wasnt released until Gear was here and that was one full year later.

The ps3 had Resistance from day one. A game that actually looked and played as well as, and had many many more enemies on screen than gears did.

Take into to consideration the new Burnout game. The Ps3 has much more environment detail( geometry, not textures ) than the xb360.

Take into consideration Devil may cry4. The ps3 runs at 45-60 frames per sec, and has AA all the way thru the game where as Xb360 version, is locked at 30 frames per sec, and selectively uses AA on certain scenes.

This was proved but the guys on Beyond3d, the same guys who found the Halo3 wasnt HD but ED.

Listen to this podcast, the Burnout Devs talk about the misconceptions of multi platform developing, and youll even be surprised to hear them say " the xb360 GPU isnt more powerful, a widely used misconeption in forums"

They say that both platforms do thing differently and that makes things more even.
