China Wants Identity of Bloggers

In an apparent move to keep dissention at a minimum, the Internet Society of China has recommended that the government require bloggers use their real names when registering their blogs. While no decision has been made as of yet, officials say such a system will be put in place.
China's communist leadership has cracked down hard on Internet free speech in the country, claiming that some outside information would subvert the Chinese government. China regularly blocks certain Web sites, and monitors net communications.
The Ministry of Information Industry, of which the group is a part of, had recently issued decrees that expanded its oversight to blogs and Internet-based news sites. The "real name" system could be seen as an extension of these policies.
"A real name system will be an unavoidable choice if China wants to standardize and develop its blog industry," Internet Society secretary general told the state-run Xinhua news agency Monday.
While bloggers would still be able to use a handle to post under, the new policy would stipulate that a real name be provided at registration.
China should just get bent.
China is a horrible country.
China makes non-quality crap.

|China (as a system of government) is going to have to learn censorship only hinders the economic growth of the nation. Instead of trying to limit what it's citizens can read and write, it (as a government) should be focused on providing more education.
In other words, I understand why the Chinese government monitors communications and blocks web sites, and I understand why they would want bloggers to register the blogs with their real names. It's because they fear democracy. They fear they will lose complete control and the citizens of China will begin a revolt.
But the opposite is actually more realistic. The more they try to keep it's citizens from experiencing freedom of speech, the closer they are to a revolt.
It's like the illegal drug industry.
The more the U.S. government tries to control the flow of illegal drugs, the more illegal drugs flow into the nation.
Why?
Because every human shares a common facet.
We all want the freedom to be able to choose how we live our lives. This is the same reason why democracy is hated by a lot of Eastern nations, and the same reason why there is terrorism in the world.
There are a few people who want to be in complete control of every aspect of life, including yours. And they will do whatever they have to to try to keep (or gain) that control. But in the end, they are only hurting themselves. We humans will not tolerate dictatorship and monarchy governments when human rights are violated.
China will soon come to terms with this, or they will lose the respect and power they have tried so hard to gain.
It doesn't matter that they are the most populated nation in the world. China as a communist government is not truly communist anyways. I agree with Grazer here, communism has nothing to do with hindering freedom of speech.
Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a future classless, stateless social organization, based upon common ownership of the means of production. It can be classified as a branch of the broader socialist movement. (Taken from wikipedia).
Thus, by this definition, communism should encourage freedom of speech.

|...and communism is not necessarily undemocratic. It my understanding that China's primary reason for censorship is to maintain peace among its people. Hence the ban on religion and religious speech. Can you think of any other type of idea that has caused near the amount of conflict?
But while the ideal of absolute equality does have a certain appeal, it doesn't work. People are naturally greedy and lazy (and all of the seven really). Thus, everyone wants more than their fair share and no one wants to do more than the minimum required (unless they want to feel proud of doing things better than their peers).

|Ironically the fear campaign that you talk of is exactly what is goes on in America.
Those freedoms that americans enjoy are being taken away one by one.
Now when you go to the airpoirt your not allowed to bring any liquids through the security checkpoints. On the otherside of the terminal they sell you liquids and those aren't allowed on the plane.
Do you really believe that your safe when they wont even allow the their own liquids that they sell to you on the plane?
I think the difference between china and America is that china tells you what they are doing. Where in America big brother is wire tapping you without your knowledge.

|How about totalitarian? Whatever. It's a very left, highly controlling government. I don't want to upset your feelings about your local co-op organic grocery market.
Score: 0
|I have no "local co-op". "Totalitarian" is a loaded, meaningless term which can be applied to almost anything. Communism is not diametrically opposed to democracy in the least, capitalism yes. While communism is as far "left" as is really possible, pure capitalism is as far "right" as possible and oddly borders on anarchy. Extreme capitalism can lead to things much worse than communism, things you only read about in the CyberPunk genre.
I think you assume I support communism because I can defend it against bogus claims, but if you look at a later post of mine you will see what I truly think of it.

|whatever. I don't care about your economic philosophies. China, a "communist" country in many senses, also is anti-free speech. Just like every other far left regime. I know the PoliSci, but the reality is they're still "commies" in the sense that they will not protect dissident speech. Lenin, Stalin, Castro, et al. As long as China has a politburo, they're wrong.
Hopefully that's not loaded.

|I think you are confusing "communist" with "oppressive". It is not my economic "philosophy" that communism and democracy are not opposites, it is plain fact. Just as it is fact that it is capitalism that is communism's opposite.
Score: 0
|That's the thing, I think. Communism sounds *great* in theory, but it never seems to work in practice. It's way too easy for communism to be exploited by the powerful for their own gain and everyone else's loss, which is (I think) incredibly ironic.
Score: 0
|That is what I have been saying. Communism itself is a great idea, one that no human being can live up to, as it requires people to be little more than machines. Machines don't need motivation and incentives, people do; and communism really cannot provide that...but that does not make communism "evil" or "totalitarian" or "icky", just unrealistic.
