Docs: Ballmer Vowed to 'Kill' Google

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

September 6, 2005, 1:34 PM

Court documents publicly released late last week in the increasingly nasty battle between Microsoft and Google over the hiring of Kai-Fu Lee include an outburst by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer where he vowed to "kill" Google.

Mark Lucovsky, a senior engineer who left Microsoft in November 2004, recounted his conversation with Ballmer in a statement to the court. "Just tell me it's not Google," Ballmer said. Lucovsky claimed that when he confirmed that he was leaving for Google, Ballmer reacted violently.

"At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office," Lucovsky said in his statement. Ballmer also had a few choice words for Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

"I'm going to f---ing bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to f---ing kill Google," Ballmer apparently said.

To his defense, while confirming that he did meet with Lucovsky, Ballmer said Lucovsky's recollection of the meeting is flawed.

"Mark Lucovsky's account of our conversation last November is a gross exaggeration of what actually took place," Ballmer said. "Mark's decision to leave was disappointing and I urged him strongly to change his mind. But his characterization of that meeting is not accurate."

Microsoft is firing back as well, exposing e-mails by Lee to Google executives expressing interest in joining the company, as well as transferring edited Microsoft documents to Google. Lee was one of the authors of a white paper titled: "Making it in China: strategic recommendations for Microsoft."

Microsoft also claims that in e-mails Lee was advising the company on the possibility of hiring Microsoft employees for Google's China operations.

Stop and think for a second... perhaps Google highered buddy to pi$$ off M$ in the first place? Which they did successfully which I might add, and the coup de grass was that now this fellow is not working for M$ or Google. That was the whole intent, they new that they couldn't keep him as an employee because they knew that M$ had a contract with this person which stated that he couldn't work for a direct compatitor. So it's sort of like throwing a monkey wrinch in the spokes of M$ by taking out one of their top guys. So Google is looking for a fight as much as M$ is willing to give one.

Frankly, I believe that Mark Lucovsky's recollection will be as near as damn it, accurate.
This from a CEO should be as unacceptable to Microsoft as it is to everyone else. Lets see if they do the right thing and fire him. Or could it be that Microsoft condone this sort of behaviour or worse still, could it be regular business practice within the company?

history: (from c|net)
Microsoft paid $750 million to Time Warner under a wide-ranging settlement that also called for the companies to jointly cooperate on software distribution and digital media. As part of the deal, Time Warner dropped an antitrust complaint filed by its Netscape Communications unit in January 2002 against Microsoft. Time Warner also agreed to a seven-year, royalty-free license of IE and a long-term, nonexclusive license to use Microsoft's Windows Media 9 software for digital media.

This is a typical M$FT robber baron gambit - M$FT has no fight with Google, - that's just M$FT propaganda, their BOD's are best buddies - you watch - Google (which developed a lucrative biz agreement with Mozilla) and M$FT will end up merging, sucking in and destroying the whole Open Movement using Google as a Trojan horse; in so doing, M$FT will kill the whole Open Movement. And actually they shouldn't know how it works as they stay "far away" from all what is MS of course LOL. If Balmer reacted like that it is sad however don't think the people at Google are that nice, you can show a nice smile but behind goes the same thing MAKING THE BIG BUCKS as it is not a secret dealing with some anoying young people at Google yups who have that thing in mind only: "Google Me The Big Dollars" Good proof is Google Toys R Us Talk thing and ask some guys or girls from Plaxo how they think about Google and their contracts. And by the way why should they hire people from MS? Right... as they need the knowledge of MS because they can't figure out themselfs I guess. In that case I would advise Balmer to calm down, for me it would be a victory knowing that Google needs MS people to work for them.
China and Asia are a booming business, everybody knows that by now I think, leaving the rest of the world behind, it will even sucks away all the success in the past in the USA & Europe... Tough if you know the culture in China it is not just jumping in and let's do some business. That one takes much more! More reasons for Google to get some ground on this. Sure a short term succes could work just fine, in the long term however you need to be very very good friends with the Chinese and their culture to maintain your position. Google is so brilliant they probably have this great plan and to us it seems stupid but they think so far beyond us we cannot comprehend their plans until they are unraveled before us!
