European Papers Threaten Google News
By Ed Oswald | Published January 31, 2006, 5:36 PM
Google may soon have to fight another legal battle, as the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers (WAN) announced that it was looking into ways to challenge sites like Google News. The problem lies in the fact that these sites aggregate news content, but in most cases do not pay for access.
The members of the organization feel as if they are due compensation for access to to their content. "The search engines are increasingly aiming their strategic efforts at traditional content originators and aggregators like newspaper publishers," WAN President Gavin O'Reilly said in prepared remarks.
"The irony is that these search engines exist, largely, because of the traditional news and content aggregators and profit at their expense," he added.
O'Reilly called the actions of Google News the "napsterization"' of content, alluding to the long fight between the music download service and the record industry. He also dismissed any talk that these services are acting as some kind of Robin Hood by freeing the content from greedy providers.
"Google, Yahoo and other search engines are not some new breed of social benefactors of information -- they are assuredly commercial," he argued.
One of the organizations first steps in the battle will be to contact Charlie McCreevy, European Union Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, and Ms. Viviane Reding, the Commissioner for Information Society and Media, on possible future legal steps.
It will also explore ways that it could offer its feeds to these services, while recovering some royalty from the use of its content.
The WAN consists of some 73 national newspaper associations across Europe, representing 18,000 newspapers. Analysts say the case would be watched closely by other organizations worldwide, and could lead to similar actions in other regions of the world if successful.
Google has already been sued once; Agence France Presse filed suit over the use of its images on the Google News Web site. The case is still pending in U.S. court.
whaaa?
the only thing they could try suing google for would be for causing more traffic than theit servers can handel, but i guess thats the news papers fault for not coping. so really there isint a case.

|So now it's anti-Europeanism on "beta news"?
How can a "journalist" make up such headlines, when it's only too clear in the first sentence that it has nothing to do with a specific location on this planet?!?
It's the "World Association of Newspapers (WAN)", not the "European Association of Newspapers" that he is talking about in his article - so even the USA are represented in this lobby.
"the WAN consists of some 73 national newspaper associations across Europe" - simply NOT THE WHOLE TRUTH. Some would call this a lie. Mr. Goebbels used that kind of "journalism".
This is VERY BAD JOURNALISM . . .to say the least.

|"The irony is that these search engines exist, largely, because of the traditional news and content aggregators and profit at their expense,"
Irony?
Again..someone from the Alanis generation doesn't get it.
Profit? I must have missed that part of Google's news site. I have yet to see a single ad on that page.
Oh...I get it...they're stealing ad revenue by allowing people to view summaries of the story without seeing the newspaper's ads. Ya know...forgetting for the moment that 90% of these people would have never even heard of the newspaper to begin with.... or the fact that the website is probably getting a hell of a lot more traffic than it would have without the Google link-up.
As long as they are giving credit to the publisher and linking directly to the newspapers *publicly* *accessible* website, they've got no legitimate beef with Google.

|The news sites have ads as a rule. With some services like Google and yahoo news the ads from the news sites are not shown.
So, in that case, yep, the aggregators are profiting from others work and should pay a royality. Or show the ads.
Nice work if you can get it. Make money by others efforts. Yeah, I know, it is much harder to have a search engine than to run a news organization.
Google is an arrogant, hypocrtical, money grubbing corporation. Why should they ride for free? What's their market cap nowdays, about US$150 Billion? Pay up.

Google only displays a summary, or preview. If you want the whole story, you click the headline...and guess what?
You go to the newspaper's website.
Amazing, eh? Google directs traffic to these people. Traffic they would *never* have seen otherwise. And they b1tch about it? Brilliant...scary, but brilliant.

|...News papers, be it online or printed, do the same thing with alot of there non local stories, only difference is they pay for it. Papers pay for the articals and they pay for the images, google is doing neither and thats where the WAN is sitting.
Oh and dropping the links to their websites won't do much, these news sites have been around for longer then Google News and have done fine without the service. Its like saying google not displaying links to Microsoft would actually hurt business, Microsoft can do that on their own.

Google is posting the stories. They are posting a summary and linking to the original newspaper's story...on the newspaper's website.
"Oh and dropping the links to their websites won't do much, these news sites have been around for longer then Google News and have done fine without the service."
it's a damn good bet they're doing better *with* this service...they just can't see it for their blind-eye'd whining. Google is directing an enormous amount of traffic to their sites. It won't put them out of business, but it would definately remove any increased traffic they are seeing from Google...*that* they would notice.
No, I'm not suggesting they do such a thing, and never did.

|Google is making money off of other peoples work, regardless of it being a summary or not people go to news.google.com and view their ads first and click their ads first. From a marketing sense, this is horrorify since a consumer will be less likely to even care about your ads when they have already viewed other ads.
>>>Google is posting the stories. They are posting a summary and linking to the original newspaper's story...on the newspaper's website.>>>
Generally, thats what Newspapers do with alot of of the national stories. They don't make it as easy as a direct link but that little line saying source is where you go for more information.

Which is funny, cuz that's almost *exactly* what Google News is.
Google is bringing them a huge amount of traffic. I can only assume increased traffic is a good thing, otherwise...why have a site at all?

|Nope. If it's online, it's linkable.
It's not like they're claiming it's "their" news stories...you click the headline and go to that paper's story...on that paper's website.
Where's the problem? There's no plagarism, credit is given via the link to the article. All Google does is link it and preview it.
One would think they'd be happy about it. I never once visited or heard of VOA until I went to Google News, clicked ona story and was tossed to their web-page/story.
They (the newspapers) are getting MORE hits from this, MORE visitors, and MORE ad-revenue.
I can think of no reason why they would complain aside from being complete idiots....but that's just my opinion.

|This is just a scam to make money though licensing. You wait for it to become popular then you pounce on it. Exactly what happening with patents. The print industry makes money in three ways: ads, articles & access. They see google as a way to make money.
Whats this about napster?
They aren't giving away the articles.
They aren't stripping the ads.
All they are doing is providing a link to the site with a text description.
Access? This would be equivalent to your book publisher wanting a royalty for listing the book in a card catalog.
