GameStop to offer rainchecks for Wii consoles

While it might not be as good as actually getting a Wii for Christmas, Nintendo and GameStop have joined forces to help consumers get their hand on one...eventually.

"Tens of thousands" of rain checks will be available through the video game retailer for those who agree to pay for the full $249 price of the popular gaming console up front. The rain check would be redeemable in January.

By offering a guaranteed method to get Wiis in the hands of consumers, Nintendo is hoping to prevent its competitors from using the company's recent shortages as a way to gain footing on the market leading console.

Upcoming shipments would then be matched to a specific store depending on sales. GameStop would issue the rain checks while supplies last on December 20 and 21, but apparently is not able to guarantee a delivery date.

In any case, a consumer with a rain check will need to pick up his Wii by January 29. Nintendo said that only GameStop had the infrastructure necessary to pull off such a program, however it would continue to ship consoles to other stores as normal.

Nintendo's Wii has become somewhat of a surprise hit, surpassing both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in worldwide sales. Nexgenwars.com estimates that the Wii has sold nearly 13.2 million units, compared to about 12.7 million Xbox 360s and 5.5 million PlayStation 3s.

I don't get it. Since launch day for the 360, PS3, and Wii...the local "Ahh's!!" store in Sherman Oaks, CA. has always had the consoles in stock. I mean I've never seen them run out.

People need to realize there is more than just Best Buy and Target. I am sure most big cities have smaller boutique shops that would have them in stock.

It's the same in the UK, but don't tell anyone or they'll all find out and then there won't be any there either.

Interest in the wii fades within a month. They are saving themselves money. There are no worth while games on the system and I modded mine so I've played everything. My kids don't like it either. DS way more interesting for me and them. They NEVER ask to play the wii. NEVER.

That was pitdingo "2". I think it was a crack at pitdingo and his pathetic Wii posts.

I was smart enough to buy one months ago at the beginning of Autumn and have been hiding it ever since.

They are going for an avaerage of $530 on eBay with WiiSports / controller and a second nunchuck.

If I was as broke as Dave and wasn't so lazy, I'd be selling the sh*t out of these right now for a tidy profit. Our Wal-Mart gets them in every Thursaday morning, usually about 20 or whatever comes in a case X 2.
