Google Debuts 'Quick Search Box'

Google on Wednesday released the final version of Google Desktop 3.0, adding a new feature the company calls the Quick Search Box. By pressing the control key twice, a search box will appear in the middle of the desktop to facilitate Web and local searches. Hitting control twice more makes the box disappear.
Other new additions to Google Desktop 3 include searches across multiple computers, the ability to send Sidebar items to friends, deeper customization of Sidebar features, and password-protected search. The software includes a Google-like search function and Sidebar, a movable palette of various mini-applications.
I already use a Stardock Sidebar and I see no compelling reason to switch.

|This will seriously f*ck with my KVM switch.
I really hope that this can be remapped.

|It can be disabled, not sure about remapped.

|Downloaded and tested the damn thing.
Cannot be remapped.
Makes the feature absolutely useless to me.
*sigh*

|Hmm, that's cool. :) Now all we need is easy skinning support. DLL hacking will do for now though. ;)

I would hope that can be changed, ctrl key being mapped to something else already.

|It doesn't get in the way at all. You have to double-tap control to see the box. I didn't even know the feature was in GDS until I read this article... it doesn't get in my way at all.

|And doing so will toggle my KVM switch, so that while the search window may appear, I will no longer be looking at that particular desktop.
Grrr....

|LOL
So you'll have to hit it twice which will bring up the Google box and also switch you to the next screen.
Then you'll have to hit it two more times to go back to the original screen where your Google box is at.
Then to get rid of it you have to hit the CTRL key 4 times again :)
LOL.......
You have a 2 port Linksys right? I had one of those and it used the CTRL key too :)

|I have a linksys attached to this system, an IOGear across the room, and a StarView 4-port on the rack.
All of them use the CTRL key. One of them can be remapped to something different.
What a PITA.

|Oh boy! Instant compromising of your system!
And even those of others on your LAN.
How cool.
Hitting 'delete' once will make the entire package disappear...

|The option is presented to the user to turn the feature you are referring to off on install.
Although I admit I was horrified to find it defaults to on. Simply setting the default to off would be the responsible thing to do. Other than that, there's really nothing wrong with giving people the option. It can be convenient, albeit risky. However it appears that even if Google is forced to cough up info to the DoJ, it will be limited to only cached webpage data. No user data.
And, GDS does not index computers on your network other than your own. Maybe if you map drive letters it might mistakenly, but then all that stuff is available to you anyways so why not.
And I tried to find "delete" to test your theoty but I couldn't see it anywhere in your post header or footer. Oh well. :p
