Google Founders to Finance Indie Film

It's good to have friends in high places -- at least that's what Reid Gershbein has found out. The computer graphics designer turned film director has received financial assistance from Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page to pay for his independent film. Called "Broken Arrows," the film is a story of a man whose wife is killed by a terrorist attack, driving him to become a hitman to deal with her death.
Gershbein, Brin and Page became friends in the late 1990s at Stanford. Costs of production are estimated to be $1 million, and the two have contributed roughly half that. The final version is hoped to see its debut at film festivals in the fall of 2006.
"Maybe you ought pick up a copy of Time Magazine"
Yeah, the PC Rat knows he's given away billions to solve world hunger, cure diseases, and wipe poverty off the face of the earth.
And you know what ? Like wealthy philanthropists before him -throwing money at problems- ten years from now NOTHING will have changed !
This because money ~isn't~ the problem.
But, hey, it got him on the cover of Time Magazine !

That's a pretty blind statement.
Since when has billions of dollars contributed to worth-while projects accomplished "nothing?"
In a way, I guess you're right. The money itself does nothing directly. It's the organizations that need/use the money that do quite a bit to help people in need.

|So I guess PC Rat didn't read the Time Article?
"Like wealthy philanthropists before him -throwing money at problems- ten years from now NOTHING will have changed !"
The Time article specifically addresses what is different about the approach of the Gates Foundation and Bono for that matter from what has gone down with philanthropy in the past.

|Seems there are always a few very insecure individuals out there who feel threatened enough to express their insecurities regarding others. ph***eries? You are no exception to that rule. You are a very sad individual.

|This is the Bill Gates Syndrome of having so much wealth you start pissing it away.

Yeah... really wasting the money there.

|He bought a $380K porsche a few years back that is still sitting in customs impound because it wasn't legal to bring into the country due to emissions laws. LOL
I'd call that a significant waste since he can't even have it.

Wonder how much he wasted on legal fees trying to get past the law.

Must be nice to be wealthy enough to be able to write your own laws and get them in front of congress, huh?

|When you mathmatically compare what you feel Bill has pissed away to what he has given away through philanthropy I dare say any of us would come up with our own personal piss/giving quotient that is even remotely as generous. What percentage of your net worth have you tithed?

|Was I complaining? No, I was only pointing out something that he pissed money away on.
Personally, I don't care either way.
As for my net worth, I've spent the last 12 years answering people's calls for help in forums across the internet, and I've also given away thousands of hours of my time by means of free software and scripts for many platforms.
I've contributed a significant amount thanks.
Shoot, you can find my name embedded in several software products based only on the amount of effort I have contributed to the success of that product.
I've contributed quite a bit and have no problem sleeping at night. :-)
As for pissing money away well I have three kids, so .. :-P

|How is it Indie if someone backs it? I'm not bashing this, I just thought indie films were done with personal funding...

|This movie has already been done. It was called "Savior"(1998) starring Dennis Quaid. Same story set in Bosnia. Good flick too.

|First of all, he was para-military working for a foreign legion. Secondly, its the middle east, things that like are common place. Third he didn't become a hit man, he became a mercenary to fight for the Yogoslav army..
So its not even close, similar, but its really not the same thing.

|It's *exactly* the same, dammit.
And no, I have absolutely *nothing* to back that up with.
So there.

WTF?
Yeah.... That's plausible.
Now, if by "become a hit man" they meant, "Decided to get revenge and wreak havoc, pain and death on the terrorists", it might work...
...but only if the guy is a friggin' special-forces op by trade.

|So, "The Punisher"? Well, without the "terrorist" part...
I thoroughly enjoyed that movie, btw :)

|Revenge won't make him any money. So he became a hit man to make the big bucks.. He might use the money to finance a personal revenge, I didn't see the movie..
Just going off your comments :)
And becoming a hit man after his wife is killed, sounds like wishful thinking.. doesn't mean he could be good at it.
