RSSGoogle Opens Gmail Service to Public

When Google unveiled its instant messaging client yesterday, there was only one problem: Google Talk requires a Gmail account, which has been invitation-only since its beta debut in 2004. This changed on Thursday, however, as Google opened Gmail to anyone in the United States with a mobile phone.
The mobile phone requirement was designed to prevent Gmail accounts from being created by robots and stop spammers from signing up multiple times. Google will send an invitation code via SMS, which can then be used to register with Gmail. Only one account may be created per phone number.
"We're also working on some new mobile features that will make your Google account more useful and secure, such as SMS alerts and password recovery," said Keith Coleman, Gmail Product Manager.
"When you sign up using your mobile phone, you can choose to save your number with your account so you can use these features as soon as they become available."
At the moment, Gmail only works with U.S. phone numbers, but Google plans to extend support internationally in the near future. Gmail, which offers 2.5 gigabytes of e-mail storage space, is already available in 29 languages.
Google Talk natively integrates with Gmail, automatically populating the friend's list with e-mail contacts and directly enabling the composition of e-mail from the IM client. Logins for the Jabber-based Google Talk network are also utilize Gmail addresses.

|I agree-- for those that need one... is how i got mine-- & may I add, with absolutely no whining or begging: i never, ever compromised my dignity, nor fell for the obvious traps that instead send tons of spam and/or malware one's way. (insert your choice smily/emoticon here)
But that's not the point re the cellphone invites-- wondering how/why they don't materialize: if it's due to being swamped/deluged, then forget about GMail coming totally out of beta for another year at least.

|I don't see anything here that says you shouldn't use your phone. I however have tried it on 5 phones now on two services and still haven't gotten an invite. Two were Sprint PCS and the other three were on AT&T all have messaging services and are able to send and receive messages.

|The audio quality is pretty good. My friend's voice sounded a little muffled, but I think that was his mic. AND, he's in Germany. I'm in Florida. There was no lag whatsoever.
I'd say it works amazingly well for the first beta release. I haven't run into any problems or complaints up to now. ...except my friend's voice sounding kinda muffled.

|Well, I just signed up for an account (now my fourth internet mail account) and I don't really see what the big deal is. One thing I don't like right off the bat is that there's no Delete button the message window. You have to click the combo box, and then Move to Trash. I know this goes along with their whole idea of having so much space you don't have to delete anything, but it'd still be nice. No biggie though, although I've had Hotmail for almost 8 years and I'm sticking with it as my main email.

|That's pretty shady that the only way to get a gmail invite (unless you know someone who has Gmail) is to give them your mobile phone number.
That's real shady in fact. I would never trade my phone number to Google for an email account.
Google Talk is still not bad......but since they went public they have become more and more 'shady'.

Hell no.
GMail is going to be able to send alerts to mobile phones based on rules you have determined on importance/severity of incoming messages.
GMail also does not want 1 person creating 10000000000000000000000 accounts. So they tie it to a phone number, thus limiting the abuse greatly.
There's a reason it's called a Knee-Jerk reaction, and not Knee-Genius one.

|Well it is either so backed up with invites that it will take hours to send one or the system doesn't work. I have tried on three different phones and they still haven't sent even one invite after three hours of waiting.

My friend and I were playing with Google Talk last night. Beware: the audio comes on automatically. He started it up and I could hear him eating dinner and typing away, completely unaware he was broadcasting sound. :-)

|I installed Google Talk and elected to not uninstall Gmail Notifier. Google Talk installed just fine. Of course you need to remember to disable the notification of email within the program or you'll get two popups everytime you get some email.
Gmail Notifier lets you have IE open your Gmail account even if Firefox or another browser is your default browser. You can have it use another browser if IE is your default. This is useful. However, you cannot automatically login to Gmail with Firefox. You have to enter your username and password.
Google Talk would appear to only use your default browser and gives you no option as to which browser is used for accessing Gmail. On the plus side Firefox logs right in to the inbox without needing to enter username/password.
I ran into a little conflict when Gmail Notifier was checking one account and I was logged into Google Talk with another account.
