Google Opens Gmail to External Clients

By Nate Mook | Published November 10, 2004, 6:49 PM

Google has begun to roll out "e-mail portability" to its Gmail accounts, which enables users to download and send messages over POP3 using any external e-mail client. The added feature is the latest move by Google to ramp up its free service and better compete with giants Yahoo! and Microsoft. Gmail's initial offer of massive storage space was soon matched by its e-mail rivals, but Yahoo! currently charges for POP3 access and MSN recently abandoned the feature due to abuse. E-mail portability is expected to be available to all Gmail users within two weeks.

I looked in my Gmail account and I don't have the ability to enable POP3 like they show in the FAQ.

What the heck? Is this because they are doing it only a few people at a time or what?

Good grief...

wow I read the faq and found your answer to your question... I did not know reading and searching was that difficult

Have you enabled POP in your Gmail account? We're rolling out POP access to all users in phases. Once it's available to you, a 'Forwarding and POP' tab appears on your 'Settings' page. You need to have this tab in your Gmail account before you can configure POP in your mail client.

It tells you what to look for......

I got it already...

POP accounts just don't work if you use more than one computer...ever.

Hint: unconventional implementation. They will probably always store a copy on their servers, where you cannot delete it. PLUS, 'email portability' also means you downloading something to your laptop and reading messages on an airplane, train, city park... not just your bulky home PC. Think about it!

I think IMAP suits Google's business needs more.

Anyway, I like POP3 more than IMAP.

When other email providers are shutting down their free service, giving notices to tell them to upgrade to premium accounts, cutting down disk space, cutting off POP3 service to free users and etc,

Google goes the opposite and that is what makes Google so special. You do what others cannot. Thank you.

Yahoo! offer you free POP3 access, in return for you signing up for their advertising program to help 'pay for it'.

But are the ads intrusive like hotmail and yahoo used to be or are they on the side like gmail and not clog up the actual email saying what service the person is using?
