Google Becomes Domain Registrar

Further fueling the flames of speculation that surround Google's future plans, the search giant has recently become an ICANN-accredited domain registrar. Google will be able to directly sell seven top-level domains, but it is currently unclear where the company's specific intentions lie.

Google has yet to make any announcements about becoming domain registrar number 895, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill. Google offers a special AdSense service for domain sellers to make money from unused Web addresses, and the company could also benefit by offering low-cost domain names to its Blogger user base.

I am somewhat confused by my attempts to register a domain name. It seem that now there are a number of private sites registering domain names.

I have been to a few and searched for the name I wish to use with positive results.

What is confusing me is, I had previously searched the name with negative results, also I bought on to one of the private sites, and I didn't seem to have the ability to type in the domain name I had registered and go to that page.

Meaning, the name I want for my website was not in the address bar...hence the confusion...anybody have any ideas...tia, any info would be appreciated.

The Computer Rodent is waiting for this speculation regarding Google to turn to whether or not they're an Illuminati agent of the New World Order (NWO).

It's absolutely impossible that they merely want to sell domains. ~Has~ to be some conspiracy !

Maybe they're secretly controlled by Halliburton ? Anybody check to see if d*** Chenney is listed on Google's incorporation paperwork ?

Or, perhaps, the Google board of directors are members of Skull and Bones ?

Well not to blow out anyones candles or anything as such, but I run a web server, I host at present 37 different companys web sites, I run a mail server, and run local search service on all of the database driven websites... With No Ads What So Ever!!! (Just local relivent ads that actually contain information about the sites and company themselves) Now how's that for pulling a rabbit out of a carrot? Now I know I'm not Google or anything like that... but everyone has to start somewhere :o) Right... I mean am I right? You go Girl - I mean Google!!!

Hi, Pegasis I wanted to ask you, I'm interested in web hosting myself but have no clue where to start, i already own sites, but nothing similar to web hosting. Tell me what is required, and who actually registers the domain name, You or some registrar?

It's funny how people get their gasteds so flabbered by everything Google does. What does it all mean?? ;-)

If I were Google I'd just do a whole bunch of random things to keep people guessing, even if there was no common thread to any of them. It's too funny to read all the speculative posts about this and that.

I agree. People get all bent out of shape with what Google does.

They are a very powerful company and I think they do a good job with everything that they get into.

They are just darn good a lots of stuff.

Go Google :)

If Google could release an internet suite such as browser and mail checker ... I think I would quite happily switch from Internet Explorer.

I wish google would do the whole "MSN Portal" thing with a messenger, e-mail and chat all tied to one username and password.

Firefox has an addon to check Gmail (Free). Thunderbird can be set up to d/l Gmail (Free). Hello is a Google program to chat and share pictures (Free). Tying it all up in one username bow is all that's left.

Google will one day dwarf MS, if not take them over: you heard it here first.

And no, it's not a bad thing if Google grows huge-- quite the contrary.
